Crow's New Year's Drafturbation

Here ya go...

I'll keep the FA portion simple and say that I'll sign David Harris, ILB (NYJ), Casey Matthews, ILB (PHI), Kenrick Ellis, NT (NYJ), and Cecil Shorts, WR (JAX). You'll see who I retain in roster breakdown to follow...

1. Ereck Flowers, OT - Miami (6'5" 308)

In this write-up I'm not giving KC any free agent offensive lineman to work worth (signed Barksdale and Carpenter in previous work). Flowers has the ability to play left tackle, and might just do so if Fisher does continue to play awful football, but for right now he's coming in to start at RT in year one. A blocker with some skill and some attitude.

2. Justin Hardy, WR - East Carolina (6'0" 188)

Have had him pegged in the 2nd round but have been sliding him up into round 1. I'm torn, but I'm putting him back in round 2. He's a perfect fit for this offense. I'm disappointed to take Rollins out of a mock because of his immense potential, but Hardy is a guy I have to get.

3. Cam Thomas, CB - Western Kentucky (6'1" 190)

Going with a corner in the 3rd round for back-to-back years sounds good with Sean Smith a free agent after 2015. Thomas is in the same mold as Gaines, tall, athletic, and can come up and support the run.

3. John Miller, OG - Louisville (6'2" 321)

I have to dip back into the offensive line pool (this will be a regular deal) and fix the left guard position. Miller is a rock, he's as consistent as they come at the position. You know what you're getting, but that isn't a bad thing.

4. Kenny Bell, WR - Nebraska (6'1" 185)

I have to add some explosion back to the roster here with Bell. He's got great hands and is a smooth runner. He's similar to Hardy but not as much production. Better competition and a more run focused offense can do that. Bell is a great blocker in the run game too.

5. Sean Hickey, OT - Syracuse (6'5" 300)

Back again to the line pool with Hickey. A good swing tackle that could also move inside to guard. Gotta have depth too, and with Fisher's play it might not be bad to develop a guy that could take over at RT if Flowers has to go to LT.

5. Henry Anderson, DE - Stanford (6'6" 295)

The Chiefs need to continue to stock the defensive line and Anderson has the look of a guy that can rush the passer and stop the run. He's a must get for KC in my book.

5. Clayton Geathers, SS - Central Florida (6'2" 208)

You want your Cam Chancellor? Here you go. Well, not quite, but close. This is a guy that is a beast of a tackler and damn good in coverage. I don't think he'll run well and that will keep him low, but he's always in the right position it seems and is a hell of a team player and leader.

6. Mike Hull, ILB - Penn State (6'0" 232)

You gotta find ways to fill in that inside linebacker position with players that can come down hill. Hull is that type, and could be a hell of a cheap bargain player.

7. Mitch Morse, OL - Missouri (6'5" 305)

Ah, Mitch Morse. He's valuable on an NFL roster if he isn't asked to be a tackle. He looks like a great developmental guard and center type. He's a depth player you can move around if need be and get production from I think. He's a guy that can latch on and its game over, but don't put him in space. This seems to be a Dorsey type from years past in Green Bay.

7. Brock Hekking, DE/OLB - Nevada (6'4" 255)

This is my sleeper pass rush prospect. I've only seen him rated about a 7th round player in one spot and they had him in the 3rd round. Obviously there is at least one other person out there that seems to see what I see. Mullet and all, this guy looks like the type that will run through a wall for you and could be a nice developmental OLB for the 3-4. You can never have too many pass rushers.

Boy this offseason proposal really addresses three major weaknesses in a big way: O-line, WR, and run defense.

Hypothetically, say you also sign Torrey Smith. How does that impact your draft? Personally, I would also love to see some improvement at free safety. Coleman was quite respectable towards the end of the year, but it is still a position of weakness in my mind.

I keep seeing all these extra picks in these mocks. We don't know about the compensatory picks yet do we?

Nothing official will come out til March, but you can take a pretty decent guess.

They are typically awarded the 3rd week in March.

I'll believe we get that many and that high of extra picks when it's official. That said if Eric Berry has to retire shouldn't we get some compensation for that too?

Direckshun 12-31-2014 12:31 PM

Four offensive linemen?

Compensation is for lost free agents acquired by other teams, so no we will not receive a comp pick for Berry. The formula is unknown, but it is some combination of the players performance and contract with the new team. \

This article, Andy Reid cites 11-plus picks in the draft. We should get a 3rd for Asamoah, possibly Albert, probably a 4th for Lewis and then there is still Jackson, McCluster, and Schwartz, who signed decent money deals. Maybe Akeem Jordan gets us a seventh.

Direckshun 12-31-2014 02:42 PM

Why would we get a 3rd for Asamoah? His compensation is NOWHERE near 3rd round pick territory.

I think we still get a 3rd for Albert. I think we should end up getting a 4th for Asamoah, a 5th for Jackson that was downgraded some for the Vance Walker signing, a 6th for either McCluster or Schwartz, when we never replaced either.

But the league being the league, we'll probably get a 3rd, two 5ths, and a 7th.

I like Hardy and Hull a lot. Love Harris and Shorts in free agency. Nice job dude.

kccrow 12-31-2014 05:56 PM

I have comps figured as:

3rd - Albert
5th - Asamoah
5th - Jackson
7th - McCluster

On four offensive lineman... I consider the situation DIRE. I'm going for starting RT, starting LG, reserve OT, and reserve OG here. If everyone wants to continue to roll with guys like Harris, Linkenbach, McGlynn, and Stephenson, hey, more power to ya. Only one on that list I'd even consider bringing back is Stephenson because he did flash some ability. If I had it my way entirely, I would go after free agents like Carpenter and Barksdale as well as consider drafting Tomlinson to start at RG as well. Can only do so much in a blend of releases and draft picks though.

Direckshun 12-31-2014 06:23 PM

The thing is, you're cutting Jeff Allen.

Allen has some actual promise, plays two positions, and is liked by the coaching staff.

Direckshun 12-31-2014 06:23 PM

Give me your thoughts on Hardy, by the way. I know you prefer to talk about the Draft.

I'm a huge fan of Flowers, and I agree he should be in our final consideration if we don't move in the first round.

Allen has shown me nothing to make him worth keeping. Honestly.

That's why I say I'll believe it when I see it. We'll get screwed when it's all said and done. If we do get 11 picks that'll be awesome though.
