venting about work

so I have been with my company for six years. I have spent the whole time on first shift. All of a sudden yesterday out of the blue they tell me I am to report to 2nd shift starting next Monday and chances are I will be stuck there for a couple years. It blows. I have a wife and a young daughter. it is getting me stressed to the point that I am thinking of looking for a new job.

my 1st shift schedule is great. 6am - 230pm.
2nd shift is terrible. 330pm-midnight

I will have no life at all and when my daughter starts school I will never see her.

****ing bullshit.

Update the resume and move on.

I would love to. Unfortunately in this area there isn't a big demand for pipe welders right now.

Yeah, easy decision, man.

Change is scary, but it is often the best thing.

How many raises/promotions have you gotten during your 6 years of service? This might be the nudge you need to move on.

Yeah, that's a pretty specific trade. Have you considered a change in scenery? Or are you stuck in your location?

I'm part of the younger generation, but I change jobs about every two years. There is always something else out there, sometimes you just have to look harder.

If you're seriously considering leaving, tell them that you probably won't stay while working the second shift, but you'd be happy to stay if they can move you back to the first one.

Second shift is awesome. I'd work it any time.

Bugeater 07-09-2013 08:30 PM

Dude, you get to sleep in.

Yeah, in a perfect world.

That's a good way to get fired. You don't give your employer an ultimatum unless you are prepared to actually follow through.

Demonpenz 07-09-2013 08:52 PM

If it doesn't work for you it doesn't work for you.

I dont think that's the issue. The issue is never getting to see his daughter when she starts school.

Oil? There isn't even much production around here and all the pipeline guys are busy as hell.

I know it sucks but the money is good. And I don't know of any young parents that don't need more money.

Just bought a house 6 months ago. Kind of stuck. Though I have thought about it.
