Really? You blame the DC for losing that game? I think he did a great job. Held the Chiefs below 20 points in regulation.

The Niner punt return unit fumbled to setup a Chiefs TD. The San Fran kicker shanked an extra point so low that the Chiefs easily blocked it. 8 point swing on two very dumb mistakes by the Niner special teams unit. Maybe the Special Teams coach should be the first guy terminated.

FringeNC 02-14-2024 02:10 PM

They played fine in the Super Bowl -- but the rest of the playoffs not so much.

I wonder if this was building up over the season. Maybe they weren't thrilled with the inflexibility of the D.

Sassy Squatch 02-14-2024 02:18 PM

Actually a bit miffed they fired him after Shanahan saying they'd all be back yesterday. Don't want them hiring someone competent.

Mecca 02-14-2024 02:20 PM

The 49ers calling a TO on D because Shanahan didn't want them in cover 0 is all you needed to know.

That's true. The Niner defense looked pretty awful in the Green Bay & Detroit games. Much stronger defensive performance in the Super Bowl.

If the Niner special teams unit did not gift wrap a 8 point swing to the Chiefs, the Niners are probably the champs and Wilks still has the DC job. Razor thin margins in this sport.

warpaint* 02-14-2024 02:25 PM

They went from first to 8th in the league in yards per game from last yr to this yr & from first to third in points per game (both regular season).

That's still a very good defense regardless of the marginal drop off year over year.

He's had a slew of one year stints recently for different reasons. Perhaps there are other issue(s) contributing to the quick exits. IDK anything about it, just wondering out loud.

That was my thought too. 49ers had a mostly bad defense. Made a trade for chase young and thought they fixed things. Lousy playoff. solid Super Bowl.

So it’s surprising but also not totally surprising

chiefzilla1501 02-14-2024 02:29 PM

If not for the late season trades he was almost out. Easy to forget they were playing that game of “should he be on the sidelines or the booth” which usually means they don’t trust him

Punt hit guy in leg. Purdy can't get protection right against the blitz. Purdy can't make a play. Debo, Kittle and Ayuk are mia. OL failed to block Jones. Bosa fell for a fake hand off 3 times and Mahomes burned him.

Yup fire the DC

They should fire the position coach who's supposed to stop Bosa from over pursuing. On that Mahomes run Bosa totally bit on the fake handoff and chased CEH all the way across the backfield to tackle him while Patrick was scrambling for 20 yards.

Yeah, San Fran's D has had issues the entire season. It wasn't the defenses fault they lost the game but Wilks should have been more consistent with the talent his squad had.

Seemed like this game was more of Shanarat ****ing up the play calling more than their defense. We were getting dominated on both sides of the line through most of the first 3 quarters, and they kept calling passing plays after halftime. They went 3 and out 3 straight times after halftime with 8 passes and 1 run which essentially burned no clock and gave the Chiefs more time to get the offense going.

After ****ing up 3 Super Bowls with his refusal to run the ball with a lead in the second half, it’s obvious he isn’t learning from his mistakes and will continue to blame everyone else.

Balto 02-15-2024 11:27 AM

I have a theory....

-Wilks sent his defensive captain, Fred Warner, out to call the OT coin toss but before hand told him to take the ball if they win the toss.

-Everyone kills Shanahan over the OT coin flip when in fact it was Wilks that reminded Warner to take the ball!

-Staying classy but still upset, Shanahan said he talked with the coaches and that they were in charge of relaying the playoff OT rules and plan.

-3 days later Shanahan fires Wilks

No, we were targeting Bosa on those plays, no matter what he does, it is the wrong decision. If he bites on CEH Mahomes pulls and runs. If he doesn't bite the ball is handed off to CEH.

Ummm Purdy throwing four picks in that game probably played more into that than the defense.

The two play calls after the MVS **** up in OT were paramount in us winning. Nonsensically gives us a huge cushion on 2nd and long to half the distance then does an all out blitz on 3rd and medium leaving Rice wide open to get the 1st.

Don't think it really mattered. Mahomes was locked in.

He had 3 downs to pick up 14 yards against an absolutely gassed defense.

When Mahomes and Reid are on, child's play.

RedinTexas 02-15-2024 12:05 PM

I'm sure Wilks was at fault for the blown 28-3 lead in Super Bowl 51 and the blown 10 point lead in the 4th quarter in Super Bowl 54 too. I mean, is Shanahan supposed to tolerate that kind of incompetence on his staff?

He was doing it all game, it was effective up until that point.

But yeah think pretty much anyone who followed the Chiefs probably knew with the game on the line the line QB was going to have a run pass option. They were not losing with the RB getting stuffed,

Probably not.
