The Athletic - Trent McDuffie Draft Trade Article

Spoiler!

O.city 06-20-2023 07:25 AM

Just read this.

Really nice write up. McDuffie is gonna be really good. I think he also makes Sneed a bit redundant.

Coochie liquor 06-20-2023 07:28 AM

Boner-rific!!

I like Sneed's versatility with how much Spags likes to use him to rush the passer, but I'm right there with you in terms of he gives us the option to move on from Sneed if we can't get numbers to work out, though I greatly enjoy having both in our secondary.

I can see a scenario where they move on from Sneed and utilize a few players in the Sneed blitzing role (Conner, Nazeeh, even Tranqill and Chenal)... maybe the DL is improved enough that reliance on the DB blitz is diminished quite a bit. If Nic Jones is the real deal, I'd say he's definitely going to be a FA. He's definitely versatile and I love his physicality, but his pure cover skills are averageish?

So I think it's pretty apparent that Elam would've been a Chief had things gone a little differently (and likely McDuffie a Bill).

Interesting read.

DaFace 06-20-2023 08:13 AM

Just a note that The Athletic just laid off a bunch of their writers and are consolidating some beats into regional coverage. I doubt Nate is in any danger soon given the Chiefs success, but consider giving them a click or even subscribing if you like his stuff.

Good points. McDuffie is a better pure cover corner in my opinion, but Sneed's versatility is big, especially in a game in which DCs like Spags are looking for guys that can do a bit of everything.

That being said, I personally don't think we'll resign him unless the rest of the league sees him in a worse light than we do for some reason. And in terms of Nic Jones, it's just crazy how great Veach is at drafting late in the draft, especially in the secondary. We will see.

RealSNR 06-20-2023 08:29 AM

What exactly does Clark Hunt do at these meetings? I know he's not football illiterate, but what is he really going to do? Tell Veach he shouldn't draft this one player who's high on his board?

I know it's part of the process and not getting blindsided and communication from top to bottom yadda yadda, but the man can't be doing much more than sitting there and just nodding and going, "Sounds good to me."

It looks like they're still offering the subscription that I got in on earlier in the year. $1/month for the first 12 months. Sign up ya cheap bastards!

I think after Pioli, my guess would be he wants to keep that level of involvement just in case... same reason Andy and Veach report to him seperately, unlike previously when Haley/Crennel reported to Pioli who then reported to Hunt.

Things got dark with Pioli, and he probably decided he needed to change how he does business too.

Kiimo 06-20-2023 08:48 AM

The people here that thought McDuffie sucked because he didn't get enough pass breakups or interceptions or have long enough arms well you know who you are and what you said.

Probably just making sure the train isnt off the rails, and to make sure that there isnt a dorsey like rift in the ranks.

Didn't even think about the Dorsey situation. That's a good point too.

He can tell Veach not to trade a 1st next year since the Chiefs were known to be hosting the draft.

This article is fantastic, and I love the kind of player McDuffie sure seems to be.

Weren't the Chiefs all the way in on trying to trade up for Jameson Williams? I seem to remember that.

Would have enjoyed reading about that, but the Chiefs may not want that story told.

I would be extremely surprised given the draft capital investment (McD, Williams, Watson, Naz Johnson, Connor?, Nic Jones) if Sneed receives a 2nd contract here.

I had that same thought.

This team absolutely loves Sneed, but after the Chris Jones extension gets done, they may only have like $20m to play with next offseason, and $8m or so goes to the draft class.

McDuffie can play the Sneed role. They've been trying out Nic Jones in the slot at camp as well, reportedly.

I think they're preparing for it.

When we look back on history years from now, it will be Mahomes that gets all the glory, but Brett Veach changed this franchise and this article proves it from Clark Hunt’s quotes.

He was the one that was aggressive. He was the one that changed the mindset that was rotting this franchise for decades.

Thank God this happened. We wanted this for years and years and we are now seeing the dividends of that excellent management.

I like that he involves himself even if he does nothing more than give the approval nod. As the owner he needs to be involved enough to know who is doing good things for his team and who is not. There's not much worse than a detached owner that cares little about the state of the franchise just so long as its value increases.

McDuffie seems like one of those guys like Patrick who's mature beyond his years.

Jameson had pre draft smoke, and it may be and likely was just smoke. Remember the time the Chiefs were calling around to get a premier ILB and took the best QB of all time instead?

Kiimo 06-20-2023 12:19 PM

I mean, the jury is very much extremely out on Jameson Williams

He has tremendous upside if he can ever get in a game healthy and not suspended

He also said this might be Chris Jones last year as a Chief

He is pumping the money in and in a golden age of any franchise in worldwide sports history why would you not want to get up close to the detail of how your guys are making it happen

That's a fantastic deal.

Coogs 06-21-2023 10:49 AM

Something that doesn't get much attention in the Bengals crying about losing to the Chiefs is that Sneed also went out 4 plays into the game. That fact kind of gets lost in the shuffle with Mahomes being hobbled and our WR's being down to MVS, Moore, and Kemp.

BossChief 06-21-2023 03:59 PM

I found it interesting that Clark is involved enough to have Veach breakdown all the prospects available that Veach has a first round grade on and also has to approve trading up in the draft. The line about his approval to trade up for McDuffie was interesting and confirmed a lot of our prior suspicions, even though Pioli let’s similar nugget slip while he was here.

Clark Hunt doesn’t get enough credit around here for running the top organization in the NFL…and if we’re being realistic he’s probably doing the best job of any owner on American pro sports.

Someone needs to start a Clark Hunt appreciation thread.

RunKC 06-22-2023 08:28 AM

As someone who likes Sneed a good deal, McDuffie is CB1. He’s just a better player.

He gets plenty of praise in his daughter's thread (by everyone not named Billay).
