Is surfing the web on a cell phone becoming an impossibility?

I spend time when out at a bar or on my porch smoking a cigar or waiting at a doctor's office surfing the web on my cell.

In the last 4-5 months it seems I can't even visit a single site or read one ****ing story that doesn't have a thousand pop ups for cookies, for contacting them via chat, for subscribing, for a coupon, ad after ad after ad either blocking the screen or story and intertwined between every God damn paragraph.

It's gotten to the point I don't even want to do anything on my phone except visit a couple of sites that I know aren't all ****ed up.

And the worst is Facebook. 1 million stories and ads to scroll through to find one post from someone you know. June 1st I am deactivating my FB account and will only check in once every six months to say hello to cousins and distant friends.

What the hell has happened to the internet??? :harumph:

GET OFF MY LAWN!

Third Eye 05-25-2023 08:17 AM

I don’t have this issue at all, but I also don’t really “surf” the web so much as cycle through a handful of regular sites like CP and Reddit.

AdolfOliverBush 05-25-2023 08:18 AM

Damn, Grandpa. Get yourself a flip phone.

Mr_Tomahawk 05-25-2023 08:19 AM

Stop looking at porn on your phone.

Use the computers at the library for that.

Otter 05-25-2023 08:21 AM

Cell phone apps are just as bad. When I'm on my PC behind linux or even windows OS it's a very straightforward interaction. On the same businesses cell phone app it's a mess of trying to navigate through AI ads and customer service.

I'm >< close to going back to my Rugby flip phone, and buying a Android tablet for when I need access on the road.

I work from home 90% of the time since the pandemic and between phone apps and ads I just don't need the frustration.

Wisconsin_Chief 05-25-2023 08:22 AM

Many of these companies make it as unpleasant as possible to use a web browser because they want you download their stupid apps instead. I prefer a web browser as well so I gravitate towards sites that don’t discourage me from doing so by intentionally sucking.

scho63 05-25-2023 08:23 AM

Ironically the porn sites have the LEAST amount of shit and no pop ups.

I have an LG K92 5G. It's fast and nice screen size.

That's where I headed. No surfing just a few sites that I know are clean of all the shit.

Itcs not as bad on a laptop but I see some growing bullshit there too.

Fox News website is abysmal, the worst of the big media sites. I don't visit it anymore.

I have a Samsung Note 20 Ultra 5G that is only 1.5 years old. In the past few months, Samsung has forced about 4-5 updates. I used to get onto CP and also Phog.net with nary a problem. But once they started doing these updates, my phone would sometimes lock up on these forums while scrolling up or down. I don't know what is the cause but it is really irritating. With the last update, it will freeze (not react to any input) but usually only for a few seconds and then it will allow me to scroll again. That's an improvement but still not back to normal.

Bearcat 05-25-2023 08:44 AM

Doesn't sound like a normal experience. I tried Fox News and got one "try the app" thing and then going into articles I see an Amazon ad every 2 or 3 paragraphs.

If yours is significantly worse than that, either your browser sucks and you need to use a new one, or you have some kind of pop-up malware or something (and the most thorough way to fix that would be a factory reset if you have an easy way to backup/restore numbers and stuff).

The Franchise 05-25-2023 08:46 AM

I've stopped using it on my phone except to post updates/pics... same experience as scho, you might see one update from a friend and then 3 or 4 ads or suggested sites, etc. For a while I'd x each of them and then it seemed to clear up the next day, but only browse on desktop now (if at all).

It was nice way back when you could just set it to see all updates in chronological order... what a concept that was.

Rain Man 05-25-2023 09:09 AM

If I could go back in time and kill one person, Hitler would be safe because I would target the person who invented those stupid pop-ups that show up on every site now.

Seriously, does anyone EVER say, "Wow, that thing that interrupted what I was doing is really interesting. I think I'll sign up for that newsletter that it's touting."? I feel like most web sites annoy 99,999 people just so the 100,000th person who has dementia will accidentally follow the popup link. A popup could be giving away large amounts of money and I'll still not click it out of pure principle.

KCUnited 05-25-2023 09:11 AM

Our neighborhood Facebook group is good for some lulz while taking a shit in the mornings.

Mostly "think of the children!" Karen bullshit, but it can be good for recommendations for local services and tips, especially being new to the area. I just found someone to watch our pets there this morning so it does have some uses.

The Man Who Invented Pop-Up Ads Says 'I'm Sorry'

Ethan Zuckerman, the man who invented pop-up ads, has apologised to the world in a lengthy explanation of his original intentions.

Writing for The Atlantic, Zuckerman explains that he had unintentionally created one of the most hated forms of advertising on the web.

In the late 90s Zuckerman worked for Tripod.com, a website that marketed content and services to graduates. Tripod later changed business model after the initial concept failed to catch on, becoming a webpage-hosting provider and “proto-social network” instead.

Tripod tried a number of revenue streams to keep the business going including; selling merchandise, a subscription service and even a paid-for magazine. But what really worked was advertising, and this is where it all began.

As Zuckerman explains in his essay: “At the end of the day, the business model that got us funded was advertising. The model that got us acquired was analyzing users’ personal homepages so we could better target ads to them. Along the way, we ended up creating one of the most hated tools in the advertiser’s toolkit: the pop-up ad.

“It was a way to associate an ad with a user’s page without putting it directly on the page, which advertisers worried would imply an association between their brand and the page’s content."

"Specifically, we came up with it when a major car company freaked out that they’d bought a banner ad on a page that celebrated anal sex. I wrote the code to launch the window and run an ad in it. I’m sorry. Our intentions were good.”

My favorites are the out of nowhere headscrather requests like "Does anyone have a wetsuit my husband could borrow for the weekend? He's a bigger guy but not super huge if that helps. I can return it first thing on Monday"

*click on profile and see that husband is indeed super huge

I got removed from our neighborhood Facebook page for telling a Karen to shut the **** up when she posted how the kids screaming as they were fishing around the lake was causing her dog to bark.

I tried that site once thinking it might be a good place to see if there were neighborhood events or useful local info on there, and it was exactly this. That place will really make you lose faith in humanity.

I'm a complete Karen when it comes to dogs barking nonstop outside, not because I hate dogs, but because I ****ing hate asshole dog owners who leave their dogs outside to bark for hours at a time.

That's basically my line though... not going to shame freakin' kids for having a good time outside.

I finally had to bail on mine. As you might imagine, Naperville has more than it's far share of Karens. Eventually I just couldn't take it anymore.

Rain Man 05-25-2023 12:27 PM

Nextdoor is a great concept other than the people.

I was really interested when it first started, because I thought it would be great for learning about neighborhood events and happenings, and maybe even ID'ing some new friends in the neighborhood. The interest groups seemed promising, and I joined a couple (board games and football history).

For the most part, it's a disaster that lowers my opinion of humanity. And the interest groups have never produced any fruit at all.

However, it's good enough at a few things that I keep it. It's good for selling stuff. When I redecorated my home office I was able to quickly sell my old items. And Nextdoor was a godsend when the French bicyclist hit me, because I put the description out and he was ID'ed immediately, which let me recover a lot of costs.

I live in the Valley in LA and Nextdoor was wild during the pandemic when neighborhoods were just pushing the same homeless people around to some other neighborhood and they were all screaming at each other for it. It was the most NIMBY in action thing I'd ever seen.

lmao yeah there was this trend before I deleted it where people were taking pictures of people walking outside and posting it on nextdoor because they looked suspicious and fifteen busybody bitches immediately would say thanks susan you're doing to Lord's work. Scary! What an awful thing society has become.

And I'd be like that guy walking by your house with a hat on? omg alert the authorities.

I'm getting mad just thinking about it.

He keep watching that Guy Ritchie movie thinking Brad Pitt would show up eventually. Understanding why he couldn't be understood in the previews

Chief Pagan 05-25-2023 01:04 PM

I guess there's options to make the phone experience better?

But I've found the desktop experience to be nicer and easier to navigate and much prefer the larger screen size.

Working from home and not getting out as much as I used to, I don't really spend much time surfing on my phone.

The phone is only text and short emails, GPS maps.

For couch surfing I picked up a Surface just so I could have a tablet that was treated by web sites as a desktop and not a mobile. The Surface doesn't have Cellular but I'll sometimes Hotspot the phone to use the tablet on the go. Or I'll surf a limited number of sites on my phone if I'm waiting for a dentist appointment or something.

I've been happy with the Surface as a desktop tablet.

Its a private FB page created for our community but is pretty much the same content as you would get using Nextdoor

There's several other frightening variations as well

There's one specifically for moms

There's one that's "Uncensored" which is basically our neighborhoods version of CP DC

There's one specific for buying, selling, and trading

And a few others specialty ones (wine, cocktail, BBQ groups, etc)
