***Official 2023-2024 Missouri Tigers Men's Basketball***

New thread to discuss all things MU Basketball related heading into year 2 of the Gates era.

Thus far we've had a couple of misses in the portal and lost a non-factor. I suppose I can update the OP as roster changes come about.

Updates:

Titty Meat 04-12-2023 08:38 PM

I think damn near every team has had some misses in the portal it feels like. The list of offers is ridiculous I read Arkansas has offered atleast 84 players in the portal so far

dlphg9 04-12-2023 09:01 PM

D'Moi Hodge is declaring for the NBA draft. That's sucks. Hopefully he gets info that says he's not gonna get drafted high, so that he comes back.

I don't believe he has any eligibility left. This past year was his COVID year.

Oh, thats what I was thinking, but this is his Twitter post.

I would like to thank my family for their continued love and support of my goals and dreams. To Coach Gates and the entire Mizzou organization, what a season! I also want to thank my brothers for pushing me.
With that being said I’m officially declaring for the 2023 NBA Draft.

dlphg9 04-23-2023 11:17 AM

Matthew Cleveland, has MU in his final 3. If we get him, then damn that's exciting.

OKchiefs 04-23-2023 12:04 PM

Going to be an interesting next couple of days to see what happens with Cleveland (or whenever his decision will be) and what we find out on what direction Kobe Brown is leaning, draft vs. staying at Mizzou for one more year.

duncan_idaho 04-23-2023 02:21 PM

Cleveland is in Columbia this weekend. Has strong ties with CY, who recruited him to Florida State.

OKchiefs 04-23-2023 02:23 PM

Well looks like Brown did declare for the draft, so the question is whether he stays in or not. Saw some mention that so far he's not projected even as a 1st round pick, which would make me think he might ultimately come back to Columbia for one more year. Maybe some NIL money can be put together to help sway his decision?

He said he was declaring, but keeping his final year of eligibility open. Pretty much what we all expected. I haven't seen him be considered a 1st round talent, which is crazy. I'm hoping he hears that he's a 2nd round guy, comes back, wins CPOTY, and leads Mizzou to a Final Four.

dlphg9 05-07-2023 12:10 PM

****ing sucks, we lost our on Matthew Cleveland to god damn Miami.

Mizzou made it into John Bol's top 8. He has a visit scheduled for Sept 23. He's a 5 star recruit and he's either 7' or 7'1". 2024 class and surprising no relation to Bol Bol. He'd be an insane guy to get, so let hope it happens. Dear God please lol.

dlphg9 05-12-2023 05:37 PM

Watching videos of this kid and holy shit is he smooth. He's not like most of those 7' monsters. He's got great control of his body. I want him more than anyone ever lol.

BryanBusby 06-23-2023 11:58 AM

Pretty impressive turn around from being a tirefire to a tournament team that produced a first round pick.

JohnnyHammersticks 06-23-2023 12:12 PM

Got to give Kobe credit. Takes a lot of hard work and gym time to improve your outside shot as much as he did over the course of his Mizzou career. Happy for him, glad it paid off.

Boxer_Chief 06-23-2023 01:43 PM

Going to miss Kobe this year. He was so fun to watch. But having a player go first round has to help going forward you would think. Best of luck Kobe

Well just 20 days after committing to Florida, John Bol, decommits from Florida. Be nice if he decided to come to Mizzou.

Also in recruiting news top 100 player and 4 star guard T.O. Barrett is Dennis Gates first 2024 recruit.

Another 4* recruit for Dennis Gates. This one is the #55 recruit in the nation according to 247. Marcus ****ing Allen 6'6" 190 lb PF from Miami, Fl.

Seems like his relationship with our coach Charlton Young was a pretty big deciding factor. The guys been recruiting him since he was young. Weren't people excited about this Young dude when he came here, because of his recruiting prowess?

With the addition of Allen to go along with T.O. Barrett this brings the class to #11 lol. It's early, so hopefully we can get some even bigger commits.

'Hamas' Jenkins 08-08-2023 06:03 PM

Allen has a nice rating, but seems like a real project. Better than the years when Kevin Puryear was the feather in the cap, but I wouldn't expect much out of him until mid-late sophomore year.

I read he's a stellar defensive player, so maybe that'll get him decent court time.

If they don't, they won't HAVE him for that mid-soph year breakout.

Such is the way of things anymore.

Man it sucks. Watching Kobe Brown develop here was so much fun. It reminded me of watching Travon Bryant and Arthur Johnson come in here as fat little 19 yr olds and spend 3-4 years working themselves into legit differencemakers.

You're just not gonna see that much anymore. And that's a hell of a shame. That's part of the charm of college basketball.

Now if a guy struggles early and can't get playing time, even if he's developing OFF the court, he'll walk. And you find yourself rooting against him like a scorned ex. That's not what college sports should be about.

I goddamn hate the free transfer era.

CoMoChief 08-09-2023 01:15 PM

MU ever gonna get back to the glory days of early 2000s Quin era?

DJ's left nut 08-09-2023 01:30 PM

We still in on that Peyton Marshall kid?

Most signs there have seemed positive; I think he announces in a couple days. Lock him up and that gives you 3 top 75(ish) prospects on a class that could conceivably be a 5 man class.

I mean with that and a little luck on some remaining targets, Mizzou could conceivably end up with a top 5-10 class overall.

Now it's Mizzou so you know Lucy will pull the football away somehow, but it's a nice development especially after some really disappointing near-misses out of the transfer portal.

I think Dennis Gates is the guy that can end the "because Mizzou" thing for the basketball team. Dude just seems different then every coach from before. Marshall announces on Friday I believe and it's looking pretty good for Mizzou.

Bishop Boswell is another prospect that is looking at Mizzou. Dude is 69th in the nation and a 4 star. Could have a hell of a class.

Didn't Auburn just sign another big and that seemed to be what put us in the driver's seat? Maybe that was Mississippi State. Seemed like the favorite to land him kinda took themselves out of the running here recently...

Looking at recruits I don't think it was Auburn. They don't have a big for this year or next coming in.

Titty Meat 08-09-2023 11:32 PM

Was Jarron Coleman any good at Mizzou? Good numbers at Ball State like that he's played in 86 games. Felt like a decent get for Nebraska at this point of the season

I have no clue who that is, so I looked him up and it looks like he was here for ClownZo's last season here and I didn't pay a bit of attention that year. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I watch Mizzou basketball and I don't know who that is. Could certainly have developed into a player now, but I'm no help here.

Boogie.

I wouldn't have recognized him as "Jarron" at all; took me a second to realize he was talking about Boogie Coleman. Came in with a couple other transfers and was supposed to be the deadeye dick shooter of the bunch (the kid from GB was supposed to be the facilitator, IIRC).

He was fine. It was a lousy team and he was probably used a little too heavily. Really really inefficient on offense but fairly solid defender.

As a 6th/7th man, you could do worse. And maybe just being a 3rd/4th option on a bad team didn't give him a chance to showcase where he was strongest. But he wasn't really worth writing home about.

JohnnyHammersticks 08-11-2023 05:01 PM

JohnnyHammersticks 08-11-2023 05:45 PM

They're getting guys to come there because Gates is already getting a reputation as a really good young coach, and with the size of his buyout (>$25 million) it's extremely unlikely that he's not going to be at Mizzou until at least the end of the 2028-29 season. That's these guys' entire careers.

Not a lot of programs can offer that kind of upside and that kind of stability except for the elite blue blood hoops schools.

We could be witnessing the very beginning of the golden age of Mizzou hoops.

Nonconference schedule released today. I remember the issue when it came to playoff seeding last year was the weak non conference schedule, so I've been curious to see how it looked this year. Here it is

Memphis, Nov. 10 at Mizzou Arena
SIU Edwardsville, Nov. 13 at Mizzou Arena
Minnesota, Nov. 16 in Minneapolis

South Carolina State, Nov. 22 at Mizzou Arena

Top 10(ish) kid on campus today from the same class.

But he's out of North Carolina and I just can't see us stealing guys out of that backyard...

I'm half tempted to see if I can get STs for this season just to have them for NEXT season. If Gates can keep this class together to signing day, the 24/25 and DEFINITELY 25/26 seasons could be pretty damn remarkable.

UNC to a lesser degree but Duke especially isn't what they once were. I don't pretend to understand high school kids these days, so I have no clue what factors will close a kid, much less an elite ballplayer, but I wouldn't write off MU just yet. Weird shit happens man.

Is high school recruiting still a major priority or is hitting the transfer portal the way? I know Mizzou has the one assistant who is baller recruiter though so its not surprising the results.

It’s both. Recruit the best HS kids you can and develop them. As attrition occurs, rotate in transfers as known quantity to plug holes.

Eas just coming here to post this. Gates does it again. Could be a special time for Mizzou basketball the next few years.

Not too shabby of a class, and we're the favorite for #13 overall Jayden Quaintance

Doubt that rebounding will be a problem for too much longer

Nice.

Season starts in less than 24 hours. I know the big guns don't come in until next season, but I'm excited to see what year two of the Gates era brings.

Mizzou_8541 11-06-2023 08:05 PM

Is this the most athletic Mizzou team since DeMarre Carroll circa 2008?

dlphg9 11-06-2023 08:37 PM

Hard to tell how good they are considering the opponent, but they seem to be playing pretty good.
