Do you have Martin Luther King day off at work?

Simple pohl. Not meant to be political. Just trying to see how many folks have it off.

hometeam 01-15-2021 06:22 PM

I get thanksgiving day, christmas day. Thats it.

Wallcrawler 01-15-2021 06:25 PM

We closed on Thanksgiving for the first time ever last year. We close on Easter, and Christmas as well. All other days are business as usual.

Misplaced_Chiefs_Fan 01-15-2021 06:26 PM

I'm a government contractor, so we get all the federal holidays.

BryanBusby 01-15-2021 06:27 PM

I no longer have a job that sucks, so yes.

Megatron96 01-15-2021 06:29 PM

Turkey day and X-Mas. That's it. But for commercial pilots this is completely normal. For most sales reps as well.

lewdog 01-15-2021 06:31 PM

**** no!

**** you!

Jewish Rabbi 01-15-2021 06:32 PM

Interested to see billay’s answer or if I need to hit up the glory hole on Sunday.

This.

Molitoth 01-15-2021 06:39 PM

I have the day off, but I just found myself committing to a 2 hour meeting...

ugh

eDave 01-15-2021 06:41 PM

Mostly a Gov. thing. I could take the day off if I wanted too because I am a professional.

But typically, many on my team(s) will burn a vacay day so I just don't do anything on that day. Maybe catch up on shit without interruption and meetings upon meetings, upon meetings. It's typical of me to not schedule any meetings on these types of holidays when I develop my communications plan early on. I also give them a zero when it comes to scheduling and budgetary concerns. International tasks go on as usual and provide an accomplishment document next day. Holidays such as these are not celebrated by me but are definitely taken advantage of.

TrebMaxx 01-15-2021 07:09 PM

I do have it off but didn't realize today that MLK day was Monday. Good thing a co-worker said something or I would have come in to work Monday thinking where the hell is everyone.

tyecopeland 01-15-2021 08:08 PM

As a teacher previously and now a school bus driver, I've had it off unless we've had snow days before it. And even then only sometimes would they actually use mlk day as a male up day even though it was always on the calendar as such.

BigRedChief 01-15-2021 08:15 PM

If I chose to.

Poll fail.

loochy 01-15-2021 08:19 PM

We have the "we encourage you to celebrate this holiday" followed by "if you choose to celebrate use personal time or flex hours accordingly"

srvy 01-15-2021 08:21 PM

That is a Government, Teachers and Union worker holiday. :D

Shiver Me Timbers 01-15-2021 08:22 PM

I will be working and thinking MLK is looking down at ALL OF US and saying WTF.
and that is not because the banks are closed

The world's largest decense contractor does not recognize this holiday.

displacedinMN 01-15-2021 08:25 PM

Yes. No inservice or meetings either.

My wifes work gets MLK off but has to work Indigenous persons (ack) Columbus Day.

SupDock 01-15-2021 08:32 PM

Yeah, I don't work on Mondays. I don't get the day specifically off though.

Easy 6 01-15-2021 10:28 PM

Never, not once... seems like only city, state employees get that one

Hawker007 01-15-2021 11:01 PM

Never have before, but my company is now woke so we get it off this year.

KChiefs1 01-15-2021 11:36 PM

I can’t wait until Juneteenth is a holiday.

htismaqe 01-16-2021 12:15 AM

I work for a tech company. We have it off. They made it a company holiday two years ago.

kcpasco 01-16-2021 12:58 AM

No. We voted to swap that day for day after Thanksgiving.

KCUnited 01-16-2021 06:47 AM

Finance company started recognizing it a few years ago

I'll probably do some work

displacedinMN 01-16-2021 07:23 AM

America works more days than most European countries.

The whole country would have to teach about Juneteenth more if this was the case. I don’t see our public schooling system going through that much trouble to educate the kids about that ugly part of our nations history.

FlaChief58 01-16-2021 07:48 AM

Now that I'm semi retired and work from home, yes. My last boss had a very creative way of telling us why he didn't observe the MLK day. I can't repeat it here because I don't want a perma ban

kc rush 01-16-2021 08:05 AM

This is our first year of doing it. Changes happened due to things best left for another forum.

keg in kc 01-16-2021 08:19 AM

I get Thanksgiving and Christmas, nothing else.

DanBecky 01-16-2021 08:41 AM

I had never heard of Juneteenth until last year. Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. I'm a middle-aged white guy in Kansas. Who was married to.a black woman, and close with her family for 8 years. Never even heard the word "Juneteenth" until 2020.

It’s crazy when you grow up and realize the amount of huge pieces of our history completely hidden in text books. It’s almost as if they’ve tried keeping people from knowing anything about it.

We work too damn much in this country.

Saulbadguy 01-16-2021 09:18 AM

Yes. Also get Presidents’ Day and Good Friday off. Thought those 2 were kind of odd when I joined my company.

There is just too much to cram in a book and even years of education.

What makes it worse-is when states try to do state history/social studies/humanities standards; everyone tries to get their agenda in. Even with 12 years of education there is not enough time to teach all of it.

Minnesota has never had a social studies standardized test. it would have to be 400 questions.

Graystoke 01-16-2021 09:29 AM

Yes.
Got big plans, going to take the cat to the vet to get neutered.

prhom 01-16-2021 09:39 AM

Yes, my company gives us MLK AND Columbus Day off. One year we also had the day off for Rosh Hashana. An eclectic mix of holidays to be sure.

That’s it. Just not enough time. When they were getting down to the nitty gritty of our nations history they decided George Washington’s cherry tree being cut had way more significance to our history as a nation than Juneteenth, the Tulsa race massacre, Japanese concentration camps, Etc...

I mean we can’t tell a lie after all so why not just try to erase it so we won’t have to.

Just think about this...it was common in the 1800’s for men to work 70 hours per week. Then Henry Ford instituted the 40 hour work week. Thanks Henry!

KChiefs1 01-16-2021 09:54 AM

One more thing...I think Luxembourg is the most productive country & they have a 30 work week!

Yep, and we're mostly proud of it for some odd reason.

I work for a university. I get holidays you never heard of off - like Cezar Chavez Day.

Yeah you think about how much downtime during work people take because of the inability of most to stay focused on tasks for 8 hours a day. I wonder what the average time actually spent working is.

"Yeah, I just stare at my desk, but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too, I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual work.”

"Looks like you've been missing a lot of work lately." "Well, I wouldn't exactly say I've been missing it, Bob.”

“I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be.”

jerryaldini 01-16-2021 10:22 AM

Just think when the AI takes over the world everyone can just kick back and collect their UBI signed by Yang. To think I only missed this by one generation. I actually mostly like working when it's on my own time and place.

Has there ever been a topic in CP that you don't find something to whine about?
