Sorry to hear about this man, all the best, but may I suggest trying a Dental College for treatment? She may be able to get a significant discount on some of these procedures.

loochy 10-28-2020 07:59 AM

I don't know why insurance wouldn't cover implants (in this situation). Do they just argue for dentures instead? Insurance should at least cover the extractions.

The amount of dental stuff insurance won't cover is kind of shocking.

99% of dental insurance is close to worthless, if you need anything major.

Must be a provider/plan thing. My insurance covers pretty much everything within reason.

For example, they'll cover a gold crown/cap 90% but a white crown/cap only 50% because they consider that cosmetic rather than functional.

I have a super expensive mouthpiece that I wear for bruxism and sleep apnea and my insurance covered 80% of it.

I've had several different providers over the years and was not impressed with any of them. I was squawking about it to a dentist and he agreed. He said the only dental insurance he had seen that was worth a damn, was some kind of military dental insurance.

I mean for something like a filling, it's fine, but if it comes down to something like an implant, grab your ankles.

I've had two root canals and two crowns. I've heard horror stories of people paying thousands of dollars but I paid a couple hundred total.

Who's your insurance through?

O.city 10-28-2020 08:52 AM

If you have insurance and go to a provider for that insurance it’s will cover more. Most policies have a max they’ll cover so a root canal and a crown will probably max it out

When it comes to implants, most policies will cover the abutment and crown up to a certain percent but won’t cover the surgical placement.

In general, the medical plans in your industry provide significantly better coverage than others. I found this out a couple of years ago when I left my company. It was shocking to see what the most ppl were paying tbh.

never smoked, done some edibles and rarely drinks. always brushed her teeth from what i can remember when growing up. she has just for some reason always had problems with her teeth. i remember about 10 years ago she went for a check up at the dentist and the dentist told her “you have the teeth of a 90 year old.”

Does she grind her teeth in her sleep? That would cause big problems down the road as she wears the enamel down.

I have super crowded teeth as well. Have to floss every day or develop issues. If I went a year without flossing, I'd be getting teeth pulled.

no clue if she grinds her teeth but would that result in having 28 teeth replaced? she said it’s about a 6 hour surgery and she is just wanting to get it done because the pain is becoming unbearable.

not everyone can come up with $20,000 out of pocket since insurance won’t pay. but hey, if being a dick makes you feel better, go for it!

KS Smitty 10-28-2020 12:38 PM

I was in a similar situation about 9 years ago. I went to DDS in Liberty MO, they offered a credit card through Synchrony at the time. It was done in 1 day (although recovery took longer) and after some adjustments early on I haven't had any trouble, it is so nice to have nice teeth.

CarlosCarson27 10-28-2020 12:49 PM

A friend of mine in California, simply made a appointment in mexico two years ago since he didn't have insurance.

Boise_Chief 10-28-2020 12:51 PM

You might look into las algadones. Just over the border from yuma. I can recommend several good dentists and oral surgeons. My parents have been going for years.

Roughly 30% of what it costs in the states. The equipment is dated a bit by American standards. Roughly 5 years older than what you would see locally. So 5 to 7 k for what she is looking for or roughly 2k for all the extractions and dentures

I plan on it eventually. The only insurance I have is through Swope Health Care here in Kansas City and they can't get me into their dentist because of covid. Also the job I have right now frowns on taking time off during the day. When I was locked up my plan was to have them all pulled and get dentures from the prison but they pushed me off so long over and over that it just didn't happen.

This is a great post.

Someone at Amazon posted that they would be willing to give 2-3 people free complete dental treatment of x-rays, cleaning and fillings as part of their graduation work at dental college. It was a full 3 hours you had to commit.

Not sure on advanced or serious oral surgery but you may get a break on that too.

Yeah, that's what my wife's coworker's husband did.

He died 2 weeks later from an unknown bacterial infection that got into his bloodstream from the dental work. It was a horrific death. He basically swelled up so much that he popped, then his skin rotted off. His wife tried to hold his hand and the skin just pulled off in her hand.

Think twice about medical tourism. Say what you want about our prices here, but at least we are clean (generally) and have stringent standards.

Better make that $30K as she will have to pay taxes on whatever she gets.

Maybe a job, brushing teeth earlier in life, and less Meth(a lot less) would have alleviated the need to suck money from total strangers so her vanity can deal with her meth mouth smile when looking in the mirror.

Pisses me off she's getting free bandwidth on this forum.
