Your Favorite Short Stories?

Any genre. What are some of your favorites?

Raiderhater 08-12-2019 12:47 PM

The Lady Or The Tiger by Frank Stockton.

Mennonite 08-12-2019 06:12 PM

That's a classic.

I read a pretty good modern one yesterday. It was "If You Take My Hand, My Son" by Mort Castle. Kind of obscure but definitely worth a read.

Baby Lee 08-12-2019 08:26 PM

Can't really pick single stories.

Poe has about 5 I'd put up with the best. Probably Telltale Heart at the top, maybe Cask of Amontillado.
Fitzgerald has 3-4, though I think Diamond as Big as the Ritz is his pride and joy.
Bradbury and Asimov have countless great works. I read both of their anthologies at least 10x apiece growing up.
Mark Twain as well, more relaxed summery reading
And finally King/Bachman, not towering art but eminently readable stuff.

Do the Greek and Roman myths count? Read those almost as much as Asimov.

Mennonite 08-12-2019 08:38 PM

Count of Monte Cristo?

My favorite Poe stories:

The Cask of Amontillado
The Masque of the Red Death
The Tell-Tale Heart
The Black Cat
Hop-Frog

Favorite Asimov:

The Last Question

Favorite Bradbury:

The Emissary

Bradbury's stuff has been adapted countless times. Oddly enough I think the adaptations were frequently superior to the source material.

Favorite King:

The End of the Whole Mess

Fixed. Jeez, it's been 25 years or more.

It is hard for me to nail down a favorite Poe story, but if forced to choose one I would probably say The Pit and The Pendulum.

In the fun category I’ll toss in O. Henry’s The Ransom of Red Chief.

Queen of the Black Coast, Gods of the North - R.E.Howard

EPodolak 08-13-2019 12:29 AM

Hemingway's The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber

sully1983 08-13-2019 01:19 AM

As a kid and hell, even as an adult its always been Where the Wild Things Are. Thought the film was pretty good too (directed by Spike Jonze).

DTVietnam 08-13-2019 04:29 AM

For Sale: Baby Shoes Never Worn

6 word story ..Hemmingway gets credit but variations of it existed before him

TipRoast 08-13-2019 05:34 AM

Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron" has always been one of my favorites.

Favorite O. Henry story: The Last Leaf. Yeah, it's sappy but I like it.

I think that's his best, too.

That's a good one. I also really like his story EPICAC.

From King's Nightshift

The Ledge
Quitter's Inc.
I Am The Doorway

Yosef_Malkovitch 08-20-2019 07:43 AM

I've read all of King's short stories. From them, the two that are neck-and-neck for my favorite are The Raft and The Jaunt.

Both of them don't seem overly terrifying at first, but the more you consider the situation the more horrific it becomes.

Mennonite 07-08-2021 11:26 AM

bump

I'm compiling an ebook of my favorite short stories and I'm in need of a few more to pad it out.

Anybody read any good ones lately? Any old favorites that haven't been mentioned yet?

EPodolak 07-08-2021 12:05 PM

Heh, do viral twitter threads count?

Saw a crazy movie at the theater the other night - Zola, the entire thing is based on a whacked out series of 148 tweets posted by a stripper named Zola, about her adventures in Florida. It's memorable story telling, at it's seediest :)

Cheater5 07-08-2021 12:24 PM

An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge-- Ambrose Pierce.

A Soldier's Home by Hemingway.

A Perfect Day for Bananafish by J.D. Salinger

Buehler445 07-08-2021 07:55 PM

I actually liked Bartleby The Scrivener by Melville

“Ah! Bartleby, Ah! humanity”

Some stories just have a way of sticking in your mind even if you can't explain why. This is one of them.

Owl Creek Bridge is a classic. I read a collection of Bierce's stuff a few years ago and I don't think he ever topped that story. "Oil of Dog" and "A Horseman in the Sky" are also worth checking out.

My favorite Hemmingway story is The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber which EPodolak already mentioned.

Some great stories there. I've read many of them, but there are still several that I have never heard of. Funny how the author of the article has to preemptively apologize for her own list because it is "much too white and male."

Yep. I ignore that bull shit and go to the literary references. There are some good ones. Many of my favorite short stories are sci-fi, also some southern lit. I’ll try to recall them and contribute.

Sounds good. I don't know shit about coding so it's taking me a while to compile everything. That lady's list included "Story of Your Life" which is one of the best sci-fi stories I've ever read.
