-- Songs you heard in your youth in which you got the lyrics wrong?

Which songs did you all foul up the lyrics to as a young-ling?

Here's one of mine:

"I'm not talking about Bolivia - and I don't want to change your mind."

That teddy bear that Marky Mark hung out with was right as this is one of the many songs by bands of the nineties where ya can just use vowels to sing along

That's just good advice

Baby Lee 07-05-2018 08:47 AM

The only one that really stuck with me was I just assumed that Jack and Diane were counting on the bottle bounce to save their soul.

Probably because I knew they were two American kids livin' in the heartland, and always assumed that the bible belt was further south. So I never made the connection.

my parents said when I was like 4 years old, i was singing along to music on the radio. some song with lyrics "Why did you leave me Lucille", but I was singing it as "Why did you leave me, loose wheel".

my dad used to replace the lyrics from George Strait's "Fool Hearted memory"; instead of Foooooool, hearted memory" etc, he would say "Whoooooo farted, next to me"?
to this day, I still sing it like that if I ever hear it.

I, like everyone I grew up with thought this. Some people even today don't believe me when I correct them.

The Cars Bye, Bye Love

I can't feel this way much longer
Expecting to survive
With all these hidden innuendoes
Just waiting to arrive

It's such a wavy midnight
When you slip into insane
Electric angel rock and roller
I here what you're playing

It's an orangy sky
Always it's some other guy
It's just a broken alibi (just a ****ing alibi)

Bye bye love
Bye bye love
Bye bye love
Bye bye love

Substitution mass confusion
Clouds inside your head
Involving all my energies
until you visited

With your eyes of porcelain and of blue (porcelain and banana blue-I know-WTF?)
They shock me into sense
You think you're so illustrious
You call yourself intense

Bye bye love
Bye bye love
Bye bye love
Bye bye love

Manfred Mann sang it 110 percent differently than Springsteen.

As for misunderstanding lyrics, I always thought Henley was saying “after the poison summer has gone”.

patteeu 07-18-2018 09:30 AM

Beck - Girl

"My southern girl"?

"My summer girl"?

No, it's "My sun eyed girl".

Never could really understand many of the other lyrics in this song either.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DdCT0rvhsX4" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

P.S. Not really from what I would call my youth.

RippedmyFlesh 07-18-2018 10:09 AM

I honestly thought I heard Linda Ronstadt sing in "You're no good"

"I can not **** you baby cause I'm leaving today"

Never told anyone though thank God.

The real lyrics

Forget about me baby, 'cause I'm leaving this day

Say it fast it sounds like it.

WhiteWhale 07-20-2018 11:25 AM

This one was probably mentioned. When I was a teenager I was in a car with some friends/acquaintances listening to music. Purple Haze comes on and one of the guys in my car was like "Man, change it. I hate this ****ing song! I don't want to hear some pillowbitergot singing about kissing guys!"

The filter will catch it, but you guys know what he said. I know others have made this mistake, but man he was MAD and mostly just trying to let everyone know how totally not cool he is with gay.

Wow!!

Baby Lee 05-17-2020 03:06 AM

Huh, never paid much attention, but despite listening to 'Wake Me Up [Before you Go-Go]' thousands of times, I took it for granted that the lyric was

'you make the sun shine brighter on the darkest day'

then I actually paid attention, just once

'you make the sun shine brighter than Doris Day.'

Doesn't even really make much difference to the meaning, other than to fittingly make the song even gayer. ;)

Ubeja Vontell 05-17-2020 03:49 AM

For years I had no idea what was being sang....

....then at a party a guy sang what was really being said, yep.....dirty.

Listen for.....I felt my bone ah in her hair

After the guitar break....stick, stick, my finger in her hole of love

Wasn't a kid when I discovered Charlie Patton, actually knew all about his legend before ever hearing him. I was stunned.....
