RIP. That's pretty young but I think he got a full lifes worth in during his time. I'll certainly never visit as many places as he did. I read kitchen confidential and enjoyed it.

Holy. Shit. I enjoyed his parts unknown and no reservations shows. Always wondered if he might actually do it. He could m switch from being an arrogant bastard to one of the most sincere in the flash of an eye. Think he might have been bipolar.

RIP

Not sure what could bring a person to that point.

Sad. Life is precious.

HonestChieffan 06-08-2018 06:22 AM

That is crazy.

scho63 06-08-2018 06:23 AM

This is really shocking to me.

You look from the outside and you see Kate Spade and now Anthony Bourdain and you think they have EVERYTHING to live for; children, success, fame, business, money, family, love and yet they take their own lives as there is something missing.

Really hard to digest when people like this take their lives while people with NOTHING to live for go through live not complaining about anything: people with no limbs, no money, homeless, cancer for many many years, all types of problems yet they plow through.

The human condition is so strange and so little we truly know yet......

R.I.P.

dirk digler 06-08-2018 06:24 AM

god dammit. I understand when you are younger and more emotional suicide seems like a great option but at his age unless you have a terminal illness or recently committed a horrific crime why the **** would you kill yourself. you know better..I just don't get it.

I speculate that poor mental health factors into a lot of suicides. Mental states that age and success alone can't overcome.

I had 3 co-workers commit suicide. They were getting help. They seemed normal at work and then they go home and commit suicide. All 3 had survivors guilt and or having their friends die with their blood all over themselves.

I did some research on the why. In this case above its the easiest to explain. Trauma from war. But the other explanations are all over the place. Basically, their minds are not thinking like ours. Thats why its hard for us to understand. They feel an overwhelming pressure for different reasons. None would cause us to commit suicide. The best "reason" I've seen is that there is some kind of chemical imbalance in their brains.

HonestChieffan 06-08-2018 06:46 AM

Guy was an addict. Lived fast and you could tell from his writing and some shows he had issues dealing with people.

There is help out there. Suicide is not an answer.

I should amend my statement above to say I was referring to celebrities killing them selves. Whatever problems they think they are having is made up in their head and not real world issues that most of us face. They need to get some perspective, help and realize their life doesn't suck.

Its not celebrity or being rich proof. They have done many studies on this issue. People who are hungry, poor, homeless, no job and or have no family don't commit suicide at a significant rate greater than the rest of the population.

You've obviously not watched his shows in a long time. They were more about people than eating. Eating and travel was just a means to bring people together. His recent episode on West Virginia was frankly amazing filmmaking.

Because the rest of us aren't. We all just coast thru life. He had to deal with things

Eleazar 06-08-2018 08:46 AM

By all outside appearances this was a person who had a full life and lived a never-ending string of adventures. And yet he still found at the end of all of that, that his life didn't have a meaning or purpose that he could live for. Sad. Just shows you that you've got to have something bigger than yourself.

Has literally nothing to do with any of that.

People with suicidal thoughts, or who commit suicide, have a brain that is betraying them. Chemical imbalance, whatever the issue, thoughts start that tell you that you are better off gone, that no one will miss you, and that everyone will be better off if you are gone.

People think it's a selfish act, and maybe sometimes it is. I think most of the time it is just the mind betraying them.

Basically... depression and mental health is a real problem. Doesn't matter if you have a great family etc that shit catches up to you. Their brains are definitely not acting normal. Sad loss, and I've dealt with suicide up close and still living with survivors guilt.

Speaking as someone who was suicidal during the teenage years and did attempt it at least once, I know for me there wasn't this grand plan about it. Something would happen and this switch would just flip in my head and I would think everything would be better if I was dead. It was almost a spur of the moment thing. At that point I wasn't thinking logically or in touch with reality where I thought death was the best option in solving whatever issue flipped that switch even though that issue was incredibly minor.

Thankfully, I have grown out of that even though from time to time the thoughts still creep in but I am able to dismiss them.

You have to understand that with people with the suicidal ideation when that trigger goes off in their mind, they aren't thinking rationally or logically.

Would be interesting to know what meds he was on. I believe a lot of celebrity deaths are tied to the side effects of them.

Thanks. It just bugs me when people who haven't had that mental issue try and blame the person who did commit suicide by giving rational reasons to why they shouldn't of.

The fact is that people who do commit suicide like this simply are not thinking rationally. Their thought process only sees the positive of suicide and won't let them compare positives or negatives of the act. Hell, it will spin negatives into positives.

No way. I've thought that for years about his show. Maybe in the future folks will talk about the cultural importance of it.

It was refreshing to see a show that showed humanity, and that we need not fear each other.

I don't know. My grandfathers body went before his mind did and it was a long slow march to the inevitable with him becoming more cranky as the years passed on because he couldn't do what he used to do. He spent the last half year of his life bed ridden and it was terrible to see him like that.

My grandmother on the other side is going through the same thing.

BWillie 06-08-2018 12:52 PM

I would rather be broke, sleeping on the side of the rode, waiting until I scrounge up enough money to get drunk off of the Walgreens mouthwash than to take my life. But that is easy to say as someone that doesn't suffer from clinical depression. My mom has had issues with it and it obviously can be devastating.
