Dream Job?

Have many folks here are working their dream job?

You comfortable with your lifestyle it provides?

If your not working your dream job, will you take the steps to achieve that job or stay status quo?

Curious as to what kinds of jobs people are working.

19now11 12-07-2017 02:02 PM

my dream job would be tracking down and finding lost tresures. but im an idiot so i build roads for logging trucks. i dig alot. all i find is old beer cans.

Being only guy at home Depot that knows his shit. Can't wait for my retirement job.

Marcellus 12-07-2017 02:05 PM

My plan is to work at my present job until I am 50 years old (4 more years or so) when I should be debt free and have some serious cash banked and then start a microbrewery.

How are the Home Depot retirement programs?

Solid? Match a 401k?

I wouldn't exactly call my job a "dream job" but I like it.

I'm sure a lot of us would like your job of being a pilot and flying to cool places all the time. I don't even know of a pilot school or how long it takes to get through it.

True but if you are doing something you love its not really work, or a job so to speak.

RippedmyFlesh 12-07-2017 02:30 PM

Although not working anymore I feel lucky that my last job was my dream job. I did support from home and only had to show up for annual xmas party. Pay was good not great but could not beat being at home especially in winter when I was never late for work because of snow. My wife earned a year long paid leave while I had that gig. May have been the best year of my life. She actually liked making sammiches for me. Nooners. Couldnt beat it.

My dream job would be getting paid to go fishing.

First I would catch small Fish for bait then catch big Fish.

I could have a show cooking Fish.

{looks out office window - doesn't see a batters eye and outfield walls}

Nope, can't say that this is living the dream. But hey, lots of people have it far worse.

My biggest irritation is that just before the statistical revolution in baseball I took a stats/methods course and the project I chose for the semester was this massive spreadsheet and analysis on what contributes most to winning baseball games. Speed, power, walks, Ks; what was the thing that most closely matched w/ Wins on an overall team basis? I didn't have access to the advanced stats you find on fangraphs and stuff now so I couldn't get much of a statistically significant correlation, but for the time it was pretty damn good stuff. It was 30-40 pages of charts, graphs and genuinely decent stats work since I had a professor steering me in the right direction if I made some error that was self-driving the results.

Then I see things like "Mike Girsch gets GM job 5 years after getting hired by simply mailing 30 teams his statistical analysis on X" and it just pisses me off. I don't suspect I'd be some hotshot MLB exec or anything, but I always wonder if it could've gotten me a foot in the door coming out of college. Could I have been at least an intern in an early analytics department and worked my way up the ladder?

I thought I had some pretty cool ideas at the time and they damn sure hadn't gone mainstream yet. Wish I'd have acted on them.

I LOVE what I'm doing. Starting, growing, and selling companies. Sometimes successful, sometimes not. Working on a referral generation software startup right now. Fun stuff!

I will never retire.

I lost a boatload on a failed turnaround in 2012-2013. Looking back, if I had taken that $$ and bought bitcoin, 1) I would have almost enough to buy CP from Austin, and 2) buy a TF-51 mustang and go flying with Reerun. :)

Ecto-I 12-07-2017 05:34 PM

Hmmm tough to answer. I really like my career a lot. I own a small (hopefully one day big) digital marketing company and it comes with a lot of perks.
- I never set my alarm to wake up
- I can work anywhere in the world
- I get to travel around the world to some interesting places for work and can expense it to clients
-I exercise in the middle of the day and take as long a lunch as I want
-I work probably 20-25 hours per week

Sounds amazing but there's cons too:
-No vacation days
-Can never truly unplug
-Frequently checking emails, answering questions etc on weekends

Overall I love what I do, but I think being a pro athlete or a movie/sitcom actor would be even more fun.

I was days away from buying one 15 years ago in West Yellowstone. I still wonder what might have been. I think someone bought it just for the building.

Come open one here. It's twice as big as the one in WSS and it's doing very well. I know two of the bars here would carry kegs of a local brewery. Rumor has it, the fly fishing is good around these parts.:D

Yeah, I would definitely have to do a lot of research first. Big Timber isn't exactly loaded with customers. I have no idea what the draw would be like outside the city limits. It also has a lot of places a guy can get a beer for a small town.

That's a fact. It's a lot harder to drink beer slinging a fly line than sitting on the bank with a cooler next to you. :D I think you win!

Bwana 12-07-2017 05:57 PM

Hey on a side note, I was going through Big Stick last week and stopped into the Fort. I turned out to be an expensive stop. I saw a .357 I couldn't live without, a smith & Wesson Combat 66. They were a little proud of it, but I couldn't get it out of my head, so I ended up finding a better price and ordering it on-line in the 4 inch barrel.

LMAO

It's like a bull in a china shop, but I have figured out how to catch a lot of fish over the years. The only thing that has changed, is it's a bit harder to see that fine tippet line when threading the fly eyelet. :hmmm: I generally toss a few pair of dollar store cheaters in the old fly vest these days.

Bearcat 12-07-2017 06:22 PM

My last job was closer to a dream job, but the company cared far more about their stock price than employees.... plus, it was a lot of travel (perfect at the time), which I didn't want to do forever.

Current job isn't stuff dreams are made of, but couldn't ask for a better location or better people, so it's worth the trade off.
