Restaurants ideas outside of BBQ realm
Alrighty. We're looking at going to Michael Smiths. We were looking at Bluestem, but the price was just out of what we were looking to spend. My boyfriend decided on Michael Smith's because he has received a Michelin star, and the price is just about where we are comfortable spending. Just thought I would see if anyone has eaten there, or if you know of any other restaurants with Michelin star chefs in the area.

There is a wonderful world class Mexican restaurant located across the street from the stadiums on Blue Ridge Cutoff.

It's a Caribbean/Ethiopian fusion place. That also has live jazz, depending on the nights you go. The food is ****ing amazing. If you want something more traditional...Pig and Finch. Get the short rib ragu grilled cheese. OMFG. |

Take a freeway trip through the northeast corridor. I've mentioned it several times in the past, but in just one car trip through NJ, PA and OH, we passed no less than 35-40 deer carcasses, 6-8 of them right in the middle of the roadway. In suburban St.L, they have seasonal kill periods right in residential yards [for archers and air rifles, for resident safety] due to the proliferation. |

It was horrible. Service was good but food and cost were both awful. It made me lower my opinion of tin cup substantially IHOP kicks its ass something cray cray |

V's on 40 Highway in Independence is nice and cozy. Italian fare, reasonable price, and not too far from Arrowhead.
|
+1 Beer Kitchen. Char Bar in Westport is good, too, for a bit of a different BBQ option (and some stuff that's not BBQ, I think).
Bier Station would be an easy drive to the stadium.. haven't been there, but I've heard good things. |
Outside Stroud's, Beer Kitchen, V's and BBQ, the only thing I can even think to add is Bo Lings if you like good chinese.
If you are looking for less formal sitdown foodstuff that's KC-centric, don't miss Hi-Boys for a burger and rings, or a longjohn at Lamar's. |
We were in town a couple of weeks ago, and my sister-in-law and her beau took my wife and I here for a late meal.
http://www.kconeills.com I'd definitely go there again. PS- It a small quaint sports bar. |

Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken way better. I'd honestly rather eat KFC or Popeyes ahead of Strouds. That bad. |

Westport Ale House
Green Room (GREAT burger & brew their own plus carry other local breweries) Char Bar |
If 'fairly nice' is sit down/service, I could add several more going down a notch.... Longboard's, Twisted Fresh, Pepperjax, Don Antonio's (by the Speedway though).... they're all made in front of you or at least made to order. Might actually be better options for a quick bite before getting out of town, but not sure any are around the stadium.

I have to agree....Years ago there was a spot in Shawnee called KT Fryers. Pretty much like Strouds, but they made Strouds look like beginners. Damned place burnt down a few years later though and never came back. I (think) I heard the rumor that the owner torched his own place - but do NOT know if this was true, but DAMN the chicken fried steak was to DIE for... |

I miss Stephenson's.

FTR, if all Stroud did was their green beans and potatoes'n'gravy, I'd be OK with that, but the last time was there [Fairway losation] their chicken was still good. With the caveat that I'm not the biggest fried chicken fan, but find theirs good, and I only eat the white meat. The important thing to point out is, if you're looking for non-BBQ cuisine that's distinctively KC [see OP], Strouds fits the bill. The concept of family-style sitdown dining with 'signature' side dishes to go with the main course [usually chicken], and everything being cooked to order usually means fresh ingredients and attention to detail. If the day is off, or you go at a bad time, it might not measure up, but compared to the rest of KC cuisine, particularly when you take away BBQ, it's fairly distinctive and enjoyable. And since it's luv, who I believe is down in Springfield, adjust your expecations based on what you think of Lamberts, which serves a wider array of dishes, but has the same 'family style' concept and popularity. |

I no longer live in KC but you need to be more specific as to what you like/ want to try and a budget for the food it'self as KC has so many great places to eat.
Some of the more popular places mentioned are very good but when I go to another city I want something I can't get at home or something I like at home that has been elevated to a new level. I never eat steak out, seldom BBQ unless it's Joe's KC or Jack's. KC has a nice array of ethnic restaurants that I am sure you won't find in Springfield. Italian. German, Indian, African, Jamaican, Spanish, ... Mesob is an excellent choice, Jazz also for cajun, creole. For Italian Garrozo's Jaspers and Cascones. And all are $$ These (below) are a total waste of bandwidth... I think if you give us a direction these guys could steer you to the right places, some already have. Quote:

We'll be there early enough to sit down and have a nice lunch. I wouldn't mind finding someplace local that's in a "trendy" area like Westport or P&L just to be able to kind of show him the area as well. I'm an Arthur Bryant's fan, so I'd probably take him there if we decide on BBQ. Otherwise, just gathering ideas for say, under $40 for both of us. Shouldn't be too hard to do with lunch menus. We'll also be saving drinking for the tailgate. Enjoying the recommendations and conversations so far. Thanks all.

Now to try out that second link... Actually, I think I've been to the 801 Chophouse at the P&L. Not quite looking for that fine of dining. |
If you go to Pig and Finch order the short rib ragu, and the espresso rubbed pork shoulder.
The two best things on the menu IMO and you will not be disappointed. |

Strouds will cost a little more than that, but don't listen to the people talking down their food. It's still good. But expense, the potential for a long wait, and the fact that it's not in your areas of interest are against it. |

The food wasn't horrible, but the service was, and nothing was distinctive. Again the menu was IDENTICAL, but it was more like actual home cooking, where it's made from scratch and everything, but some things are colder than others and nothing has a signature flavor. The kicker was it had some of the worst service I've ever seen. Closed pretty quick. |
I think Stroud's is good, but definitely wouldn't go out of my way for it, and think some of the hype is weird.
I dunno, when I think of great mashed potatoes, I think of something closer to twice baked potatoes... they just have good old fashioned mashed potatoes, nothing terribly exciting. Same goes for other sides and food (from what I remember). The cinnamon rolls are the one thing to go out of your way for, those are special. |

I talked to the (then) manager at the one closest to me (119th and Strang Line) and he told me that the "employees were stealing the place blind". According to him, The folks from Corporate (Nashville) walked in one morning, fired everybody in the place and within a week, the place was shut down and shuttered......Go figure. |

Couldn't agree more. Stroud's just wasn't my cup of tea, from the old homestead (or whatever the hell that place with the 6 foot ceilings was) I just thought that there were better places for "homestyle" fried chicken at the time. No doubt in my mind whatsoever that Strouds hasn't been doing it right for a long, long time! |
