Boy Scouts Will Admit Girls, Allow Them to Earn Eagle Scout Rank

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...-scout-n809836

Quote:

The Boy Scouts of America announced Wednesday that girls will soon be allowed to become Cub Scouts and to earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout, the organization’s highest honor.

"We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children," said Michael Surbaugh, chief executive of the Boy Scouts.

The scouting board of directors voted unanimously to make the historic change in an organization that has been primarily for boys since its founding more than 100 years ago.

Meh. According to the article, they'll still be gender segregated by dens - all girl and all boy dens.

It's pretty much a direct invasion of their turf. If I know anything about how gangs operate, I predict that we're going to see fights in the street between boy scouts and girl scouts in the near future, though in some cases that will mean girls fighting girls now.

Yep. It pretty much makes the Girl Scouts pointless. They should just merge the two organizations

The nerds still in Boy Scouts after 4th grade now will have a small chance to interact with a girl.

It's all fun and games until the jamboree when some boy is whittling a stick, looks over at suzy staking in her tent pole and realizes the Scout sign looks a lot like an entry level Shocker.

To make the scouts more inclusive, the new book with replace "fire making in a survival situation" "Seventeen magazine and You" and the knots test will now include hair braids.

Consider your idiot source. If you aren't some fart-sniffing academic in his world, you're just some drooling waste of space.

I was never in scouts but I have a couple of good friends who are and the skills they've learned are invaluable if you're just doing basic, routine maintenance on things. My best friend got his Eagle rank and he's handy as hell to have around if I'm building something or maintaining equipment.

Juvenile, sheltered dipshits like Cosmo have no concept of the value of being able to work on something yourself.

So I guess no one in this thread actually read the OP, let alone the article, and jumped straight to anti-PC panic, huh? They are admitting girls into CUB SCOUTS. Cub Scouts is over by, what, the second grade? Oh, BTW, cub scout packs will be able to decide for themselves whether they want any girls dens or not.

They are offering a completely separate program for girls to become Eagle Scouts.

As an Eagle Scout myself, I think this is ****ing great. I know and have known plenty of girls that would have loved to experience some of what I got to going through scouting. For the most part, Girl Scouts is little more than a cookie racket. Boy Scouts was life shaping for me. When I heard this news it about made my day.

The BSA should focus more to attract black, Hispanic, and Asian boys. A strong BSA in the inner cities and among minorities would be a great thing.

Well I don't know when or where that was, but my sister and wife both were in Girls Scouts. My sister quit cause she didn't want to exclusively work on arts and crafts and my wife hadn't been on a camping trip of any kind till I took her on one last year.

I completely agree with that. I'm pretty disconnected from their efforts over the last 15 years or so other than what has made the news. That said, I think anything that attracts new members is a good thing.

One of my best boy scout memories was when I had just learned how to make a "one match fire" and we had a solid week of rain at summer camp.

By the end of the week, even the leaders were discouraged with making a fire and I hunted under brush for dry tender and made one. For years those leaders would tell my dad about it.

I only made "Life" by 14 and didn't make Eagle. :D

kccrow 10-11-2017 04:51 PM

I was a Life Scout and, unfortunately, just wasn't dedicated enough at the end to get to Eagle only getting about half of it done...

I have to say, at first, I was blown aback by the idea. It genuinely gave me a "What?" moment. Having seen Girl Scouts first hand though, I think that's a useless organization that literally teaches nothing but how to sell cookies and use a bedazzler, despite the fact that it should be more like Boy Scouts. I think you don't see the push and the drive in Girl Scouts to advance and remain in scouts for very long like you see in Boy Scouts.

I'm fine with girls being allowed in Boy Scouts, even changing the name to just "Scouts" if necessary. I believe that what is learned in Boy Scouts has life-long value and I wish more kids would be involved. I think decreasing numbers is a reason for this, but it shouldn't be.

There is so much it teaches youth beyond camping: citizenship and ethics, leadership, first-aid, swimming, navigation, canoeing, cooking, use of tools, fitness, nature identification (trees, birds, plants, etc), use of arms/archery, fishing, music, art, respect for country and religion, and so much more. Girl Scouts are supposed to be able to learn much of the same, but I seldom see it.

I think scouts are better prepared to be adults and can be self-servicing.

My take is merge the organizations and create one "Scouts," but I do not support segregation of sexes. Obviously you wouldn't have boys and girls sharing a tent or a bathroom area, but there is literally no other reason to segregate. Both sexes should be exposed to the same teaching available. They should feel a sense of community and should all be taught to be strong individuals in a dual-sex real-life environment.

Ours brought a big ass canvas tent everywhere that was more like a house than a tent. They'd carry in a camp stove, propane heaters, lighters, cigars, booze, rifles... ****, they'd have a great time... But during the day they did teach us everything and we had to learn the shit and fend for ourselves. That was the point. Independence and leadership was supposed to come from us, they were just our guides.

Did your leaders drop you off in the woods with one match, one egg, and a compass and tell you they'd "see you in the morning" like mine did?

I never scrambled so hard to build a fire in my life... Kind of a long night in the woods by yourself with nothing, then the task of not getting lost in the morning on your mind.

That's right. Had the timeline off a little. I think I was blending cub scouts and tiger cubs. The point still stands as far as I'm concerned. It's a cool experience that doesn't really have a female equivalent and there's still boys scouts for a boy only experience.

Be that dad that stands up and say's "why can't we do what the BS are doing" ? Nothing say's you can't make a difference. But I call it the way I see it and all this mixing of genders in our culture trying to emasculate the American male and prop up the "I am woman here me roar" BS is just that. I agree with this. I think adding girls to the mix will be a distraction from the learning and bonding the boys are supposed to do together. It's about teaching boys to become quality men.

Girl Scouts sucks, from what I understand. Instead of abandoning ship and crashing the BSA party, parents should get the GSA executives to change the way things go down.

I would tend to agree with this. Cub Scouts is pretty different, however. Hell, when I was in Cub Scouts, most of the leaders were women. The activities were geared around games and very basic skills we would use when we reach Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts had a different tone and was much more about approaching manhood. That hasn't changed with this news.

That why they have the ****ing girl scouts. Why would a girl want to pin the ****ing boy scouts anyway? One has testicles and one doesnt. There are differences physically, biologically, always will be. The devil is busy with his lies.

My daughter would love to do the shit kids get to do in boyscouts. Its more fun, fulfilling, and useful in the future than any of the shit she will do in gsa.
