Pros/Cons of opening against the Patriots?

I thought is was interesting that Smith was already focusing on playing NE. He said as much in an OTA presser.

Not only is KC playing the SB champs but it is the very first game of the entire season, on the road, on national TV.

I'm curious if this changes the focus/intensity of the team during training camp. Reid seems to start the season a bit slow...

Hammock Parties 05-30-2017 04:47 PM

pros - delusions and dreams shattered quickly, 100% confirmation of alex smith's inability to ever win shit

cons - none

The Franchise 05-30-2017 04:48 PM

Pros - It's a predetermined outcome.

Cons - It's a predetermined outcome.

Reerun_KC 05-30-2017 04:48 PM

Cons - none.

Yes, it is...and the small market Chiefs are their favorite whipping boy.

My post was more alluding to how it affects players/coaches during camp... knowing you start off in a play-off type situation with the whole world watching.

chiefzilla1501 05-30-2017 04:51 PM

Andy Reid's been 50/50 on game 1.

We got clubbed by the Titans in 2014. We got embarrassed by the terrible Chargers in the first half this year (before pulling off a miraculous comeback in the second half). So on the bright side, think it's 50/50 we'd win against any average to good team. Why not lose to a team we'd have a tough time beating anyway.

TLO 05-30-2017 04:52 PM

Pros - get a loss to the Patriots out of the way early.

Cons - take a loss in the season opener

KC did get knocked out the play-offs the last time they met...so there is that recent history too.

I think its going to be a great game....

You find it interesting that he's focused on the first game that matters, a few months after the franchise spent multiple picks on the QBotF, meaning he's about to be on the outs again.

Yeah, that's totally random and unexpected. And, it's all rigged - why do you give a shit?

No it's a QB driven league. You want favoritism and calls going your way. Get a franchise QB that is marketable....

Or continue to trot out broke dick QBs and suffer the consequences.

I dont disagree with that...if the NFL thinks Mahomes will drive foreign market viewership and build the future of brand...Chiefs will start getting holding calls, in their favor, on game deciding plays.

All the top QBs are about to retire...Titans, Bucs, Colts, Raiders are the teams they will be pushing. They are going to be pimping the Chargers too...they have a new stadium and a major market in play.

I dont much anymore....I like the off-season though. The whole moving chess pieces around is interesting... without the officials/advertising revenue ruining it.

mcaj22 05-30-2017 05:11 PM

pros - Chiefs beat the defending SB champs week 1 in a meaningless season game

cons - Chiefs lose in the divisional round of the playoffs to a team they should not; as the team they beat week 1 cakewalks to the Super Bowl.

BucEyedPea 05-30-2017 05:16 PM

All pro—no cons for me.

Bowser 05-30-2017 05:16 PM

Pros: We get to see the Chiefs at (presumably) full strength against the cream of the NFL on a primetime game

Cons: Brady and Belichick are 17-1 in season openers in their time together

Pablo 05-30-2017 05:27 PM

Pros: Guessing red pants will hide Alice's shit streaks, We get first crack at making the Madden curse a reality

Cons: Beefed up security preventing a lone gunman from making the Madden curse a reality

Pros: None

Cons: We start the season out with a L

Deberg_1990 05-30-2017 05:38 PM

Pros: We whip dat Patriot ass on national tv week 1, 31-17

Cons: Patriots whip dat Chiefs ass in the divisional round of playoffs 42-24

Because Chiefs...

Halfcan 05-30-2017 06:06 PM

I don't have much faith in an Alex led Chiefs team going into their stadium and getting a win. With New England stocking up in the offseason to win another SB and the Chiefs drafting for the future, hard to believe it will be a different result than a loss.

I can already hear the "miscommunication" excuse coming out of ALex and Andy's mouth as we come out flat and miss many opportunities to score.

It will go something like this...Announcers praise Brady, Hoodie, everything under the sun concerning Pats...oh and tonight they play the Chiefs- who have watched their season end by the Pats....ect.. More Patriot praise.

Game starts...Every topic concerning Pats is dissected ad nausea with barely a whisper Chiefs are even playing. Chiefs look like shit as the Pats start another Historic SB run.

CP blows up how the Chiefs suck, our defense sucks, and how much we hate Alex.

Pats 38 Alice Smiffs 13

This game sends us reeling to a 5 game losing streak to start the season before we pull out enough wins for a Wildcard birth- that ends in a loss.

pugsnotdrugs19 05-30-2017 07:34 PM

I give us a 10% chance to win, but I think it'll be competitive. Obviously injuries in the preseason could play a big role. The Chiefs are a better matchup for them than most teams, and maybe any in the AFC right now.

Instead of punishing the Chiefs how about Bernard Pollard?

Rain Man 05-30-2017 08:46 PM

Pros: the league gave New England their win last year, which was payback for rolling over against the Peyton Manning farewell tour. New England has zero chance of appearing in the Super Bowl this year.

Cons: the league may want them to start fast so they can build drama.

tx4chiefs 05-30-2017 08:51 PM

Pro - Get the hopes of an undefeated season out of the way.

ChiefAshhole1056 05-30-2017 10:16 PM

This game just seems like an Alex win. After hearing all the shit being talked about him this offseason and having Pat breathing down his neck, I think KC could pull off a shocker if we go into this game completely healthy. Their running game will be mediocre at best and I don't think their OL is that effective if you put our pass rush at 100% against them.

I've never been intimidated by the pats, I think this team knows they can match up well against them if they play how they are capable of, and Alex comes out aggressive (which for whatever reason he usually does against the Pats).

ClevelandBronco 05-30-2017 10:22 PM

Pros: The New England Patriots, top to bottom

Cons: Their con offed himself

BossChief 05-30-2017 10:57 PM

It's gonna be interesting -and very telling- to see how much energy the Chiefs come out with.

This is a team that's been in the playoffs a lot and the defense was able to keep Pittsburgh in check (to an extent)...but Brady with Cook, Gronk and Edelman just isn't fair.

It's gonna be a fun game to watch. Lots of big time matchups.

Peters on Brandin Cooks
Mitchell on Edelman
Berry on Gronk
Parker watching the deep receiver

Will Chris Jones be on another level?
Will Dee Ford show up?...Houston?...Bailey?...Logan?

Is DJ still alive?

TribalElder 05-30-2017 10:59 PM

Pros: we beat New England to start the season

Cons: we have to listen to announcers slob on bellichick and Brady balls

BossChief 05-30-2017 11:10 PM

Pros: both sides of the ball get to see a true championship squad in action and everybody on KC is going to need to give everything they have to keep up with NE. If they can make it a close game and have a shot to win, that will help the psyche of the team for the rest of the year.

Cons: NE might blow KC out. That's a lot of super star power they have...

Can't beat the Patriots. Bill Belichick has the "Pick of Destiny"

Chiefs Pantalones 05-30-2017 11:37 PM

Pros: We get an extra bye essentially to prepare for Philly after an 0-1 start.

Cons: We start 0-1.

crazycoffey 05-31-2017 01:07 AM

We beat them in the regular season a couple years ago ( que the Brady's done memes that followed) and then lost to them in the playoffs. I'd like to hope for winning both this year, but I'll settle for a loss week one this year IF we beat them in the AFC title game......

Cons: we pretend we weren't exposed for the rest of the season.

Maybe we can break Tom Terrific again. That would be awesome.

And this time we don't have to worry about signing his overrated horseshit backup as our QBOTF, or another Pats executive who will do everything in his power to dismantle our entire organization.

Rooster 05-31-2017 12:40 PM

That's the beauty of the NFL. Every game is full of both pros and cons.

Hoover 05-31-2017 12:53 PM

I think it's helpful to get everyone focused.

If you are NE, it's just another game IMO. If you are the Chiefs, its your best opportunity to make a huge statement.

Beef Supreme 05-31-2017 01:08 PM

Cons: Aaron Hernandez, Mike Bell, Tamarick Vanover

Prose: Schwartz wrote a cookbook with his brother, Jamaal Charles wrote a book with Sean Jensen (guess who did most of the writing). Patriot rookie Malcolm Mitchell wrote a children's book.

FloridaMan88 05-31-2017 01:14 PM

Would you rather the Chiefs have their at New England game in December when they may need to win it to stay alive in a close playoff race or would you rather just get it over with in week one?

I'd rather just get it over with in week one.

crayzkirk 05-31-2017 01:47 PM

Pros: it's the beginning of football season.

Cons: it's the end of baseball season.

prhom 05-31-2017 02:19 PM

Pro: we could beat them in their house in a hard-fought game and set the tone for the season

con: we could beat them in their house and promptly lose he next three games because everyone was so focused on beating the pats they forgot about the eagles, chargers and redskins

el borracho 05-31-2017 04:08 PM

Pros: Defense will keep us in the game
Cons: Another week of Alex fans explaining to us why our anemic offense is everyone's fault but Alex's

Coogs 05-31-2017 04:49 PM

Pros: This 1 game is really worth 2 when it comes to tiebreakers for home field.

Cons: This 1 game is really worth 2 when it comes to tiebreakers for home field.

Pretty much. Id even put your Pro as get a tough team out of the way early, win or loose, but not have that high probability loss looming down the road at seasons end.

Youd hate to be tied with the Raiders for division /or (Steelers/Colts/etc playoff positioning) in week 17 and you got the Pats on the road and they got some cupcake.

Cons - we'll get an early picture of what will likely happen if we make the playoffs.

RippedmyFlesh 06-01-2017 01:31 AM

Pro: Maybe it will take NE a couple of games to get all their new pieces in high gear. I think they will get better as the season goes on. KC will be healthier than any time during the season.

Con: Watching this as a Chiefs fan regardless of outcome. The whole the story is always
about the other team ,which in my opinion started with marty's teams esp Monday night games.
This will be magnified in this game.
Look at the time we beat them it was all Brady is done, what's wrong with NE not the chiefs played good.

If AS cant make it happen this year...it never will. I didn't think KC was a very good team last year despite their record. They were waiting on Maclin, Houston and Charles..then the defensive injuries and Smith quit running. Hill saved their season...IMO. I thought the 2015 team was better and had momentum.

This is do or die for Alex...he wont find a better situation for the duration of his career. I'm rooting for him...he's had some shitty luck. If you consider having $100 mill at 33 bad luck...
