I'm seriously bummed out, man. One of my best friends killed himself exactly one year ago today. And now Chuck Berry dies. He was one of our favorites. What a suck day.

You can't be a fan of rock and roll and not be a Chuck Berry fan. His music is so amazing today that I can't even imagine what it was like to people back in the 1950s.

Fire Me Boy! 03-18-2017 05:15 PM

Strange to think he'd have never been anything if not for his cousin Marvin.

EPodolak 03-18-2017 05:23 PM

Chuck invented the basic grammar for playing rock and roll guitar. He knew a thing or two about writing lyrics also.

We lost a great one.

My good pal Marc is a pretty well known songwriter/musician in St. Louis. He posted this story on his Facebook tonight: I met Chuck at Lambert Airport. He was sitting on a stanchion on the lower level, smoking a cigarette. Guitar case at his feet. I walked up to him and asked for his autograph. He said "Of course." I dug around in my bag for my lyric book and handed it to him. He looked at the pages and said "These words look important." I told him they were lyrics. He found a blank page, wrote his name, then said "Don't stop." I haven't. If you come to the Songbird Café this Wednesday night you'll get one of those compositions that is actually dedicated, in part, to Chuck.

The three greatest Missourians are Harry Truman, Mark Twain, and Chuck Berry, in that order.

Chuck did nothing to end WWII, but Harry couldn't duck walk. So you could say that's a tie for first. Mark Twain died in Connecticut.

On a semi-related note, I've watched this video from John Scruggs that showed up on my FB feed a dozen times now.

When I reposted it a few weeks ago - my comment was "if you listen closely, you can almost Maybelline being born". Chuck Berry was the right guy at the right time to evolve the music of slaves and sharecroppers, which itself had evolved from African rhythms mixed with gospel hymns and old Southern standards, into the most popular genre of music ever.

I think Omar Bradley and John Pershing should probably get some consideration here.

That's an easy price to pay for Johnny B. Goode and Promised Land and Rollover Beethoven. Those women were his muses and they should be proud.

Secesh trash.

If Missouri were on fire, Chuck Berry wouldn't piss on it to put it out. He'd be too busy farting in some toothless St. Louis whore's face.

Missouri isn't so ****ing pathetic. Your entire identity isn't wrapped up in hating Kansas for the sole reason that they didn't believe in slavery. Quite the claim Tom fame.

Burn the whole place down, starting with Chuck Berry's worthless grave.

I worked at WOF as a kid and worked OT that evening at the amphitheater just to see that concert. It was late starting like 2 hours. The reason was Chuck asked for his money up front. The director of entertainment handed him a WOF check signed by Lamar Hunt and Chuck refused it says he only works for cash lol. well in the 70s cash wasnt easy to come by on a weeked when banks closed. I guess it was a mad dash to come up with but they did and the show went on. I was a great concert and got to see him duck walk across the stage from the corner stage.

RIP Chuck you weren't Elvis you were better. Rock is King and you were the originator.

Chuck's penchant for Cash Only is the reason he landed in jail the third and final time: Tax Evasion.

I'm distantly related to Bradley, so he'd be my first choice.

Although he wasn't nearly as warm and cuddly in real life as Karl Malden portrayed him in Patton.

I remember when I used to stash my stuff in a Chuck Berry 8 track tape. When my buddy got in the car he said 'Let's play Chuck Berry!'.
