The Gong Show will return to ABC this year.

It's being produced by Will Arnett (Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Lego Batman, etc.)

ABC went back in the Delorean last year and hasnt come back (Match Game, Pyramid, and now Gong Show).

What's next, Joker's Wild or Alex Trebek's old "High Rollers"?

(not that I'm complaining too much....match game with Baldwin is pretty solid)

I remember Gene Gene, Roy... that was one of my favorite shows as a kid

Love seeing that news above, hope they can recreate the same zany magic...much will depend on their choice of host and judges IMO

Will Arnett can be pretty damn funny but I don't know if he's hosting and haven't heard anything about the judges.

Last I heard, it was given a 10 episode commitment, which means they're being very cautious about it.

DaneMcCloud 01-27-2017 03:29 PM

Does anyone here enjoy Hollywood Game Night with Jane Lynch? I've seen it once or twice and it wasn't bad.

My friend Danny is the musical director.

Not terribly familiar with Arnett other than knowing he is Amy Poehlers ex, and had a starring role in a popular family-type comedy that I cant recall the name of

What little I know of him though, he doesnt seem like the kooky Chuck Barris type this show needs

Yeah, his comedy is definitely "dry", which could work if the judges are zany but if they're not, it's hard to see it working with him.

Will arnett is funny. But I wonder if he works for the Feds like Chuck Barris did? Wink.

Just crazy enough to maybe be true, it made for a helluva good movie with Sam Rockwell anyway

My wife loves that show. I find it to be good background noise and will occasionally focus in when people start getting loud and laughing. She bought the home board game version but it isn't great.

(And yes, I remember Gene Gene The Dancing Machine)

MatriculatingHank 01-27-2017 04:31 PM

When my oldest daughter was in kindergarten she had a teacher named "Jean." Many times around the house I would refer to her as "Jean, Jean, the dancing machine" never imagining that my daughter would pick up on it. Well, she did and started saying it to her teacher. I had to have a parent's conference with Ms. Jean and explain it. We had a good laugh afterwards.

Beef Supreme 01-27-2017 04:37 PM

Wasn't Gene Gene the Dancing Machine just a cameraman or something, and they needed to kill a couple of minutes of air time and told him to get his ass out there? I kinda remember reading something to that effect about how it got started.

Gonzo 01-27-2017 04:45 PM

My dad actually put on a "gong show" at McConnell AFB, Wichita many years ago to celebrate the opening of Emerald City on base. He oversaw that entire project back in the mid 90's. It was a riot.

The unknown comic was always my fave (and I was a very little kid then). But damn I remember watching it every time it was on. Used to love this show.

On a side note, I remember watching Love American Style a lot as a kid too. Wasn't that kind of about swingers, or am I confused??

scho63 01-27-2017 10:24 PM

I remember Pee Wee Herman's appearance, the man who laid upside down so his chin and mouth were a puppet, the woman who came out and licked an ice pop as her entire act. the two guys in one pair of oversized overalls, the lady who's teeth flew out while she was singing, and many more.

Remember when Maury Langston (the unknown comic) did a routine with the wine opener?

I watched this show everyday in high school with my buddies. We were fanatics.

scho63 01-27-2017 10:28 PM

Does anyone remember a real cool show called "The Liars Club?"

They would pass around an object to 4 celebrities and each would try and tell the two contestants what the object was. 3 were lying and one was telling the truth?

It was a romantic skit show with vaguely sexual overtones. A bit risque for the time. I distinctly remember a girl telling me that her mom let her watch it, thinking I would be impressed. I had never heard of the show. We watched it together (probably in syndication). I thought it was crap but I liked the girl so I put up with it.

When she was younger, blonde hair, sexy and had a good voice, she could sing. BTA, we were use to tunes in the 40's,50's & 60's, big band, classics, blues, etc. She was a talented singer that never had any number 1 hits but was always a hot item for musicals, broadway, etc. productions.

She didn't age to well once she hit the upper 30's and 40's. As I said, my days of having the hots for her was in the 60'musical and certain TV shows.

I think he can pull off a tongue-in-cheek zaniness that would function as a modern version of the Gong Show host. If they tried to copy the original too much it would bomb badly. I don't expect it to do all that well as a network show anyway even if they nail it. Too many options for entertainment now and too much reality TV competition.

DaneMcCloud 06-29-2017 11:41 PM
