A full serving of vegetables?!?! Seriously, I don't think I've ever had Manwich. Mom always made ours, and I always make them same way she did. I just tried a NY Times recipe, was pretty tasty. |
With a fork.....
1 pound ground beef 1 red bell pepper, diced 1/2 sweet onion, diced 1 can corn, drained 1 can sloppy joe sauce 2 ounces cream cheese 8 ounces cheddar cheese, grated 16 ounces tater tots chives, for sprinkling on top as desired Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the peppers and onions until the meat is cooked through. Drain the fat and return to the heat. Stir in the corn, sloppy joe sauce, and cream cheese. Cook over low heat until the cream cheese is melted. Pour the sloppy joe mixture into a 9x13 baking dish. Top with half of the grated cheese. Arrange the tater tots in a single layer over the top of the cheese. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chopped chives if desired. Serve immediately. |

This is kinda similar to my mom's. She used about 3/4 c. ketchup, 1 regular spoon of mustard, and 1 regular spoon of sweet relish per pound of burger. |
if i'm gonna pound calories there are better things to eat

Good for you. This isn't about healthy eating or whether or not there are better things to eat. |

I've never been a fan of the Sloppy Joe. Is that weird? It's probably weird.

I've never met someone before now that doesn't like sloppy joes. |

We use the grandma sloppy Joes recipe from bigoven.com

They're just OK. Whether made from scratch or from the can, it's never a meal I look forward to. I never come away disappointed either. The wife enjoys them much more than I do.
Cheddar cheese, chopped raw onion and dill pickle slices with a little mustard to top it all off. |
Those of you that eat traditional sloppy joes (not the casseroles), buns or regular bread?
As a carryover from childhood, sloppy joes must be served on regular bread cut in quarters diagonally - giving small triangle sandwiches. |
They're fine. I cook hamburger until it just past pink and then drain it. Then I'll add a dry mix and cook it until very dark. Then I'll put the slop on a toasted bun and add as many hamburger condiments as I have on hand. I haven't made them since I stopped making dinner for my kids. That's all they really were; easy family meals.

I'm gonna try this. FWIW, Manwich is pretty good on a slice of toast. |

Wife makes fun of me relentlessly for it. |
Funny thing is....my kids don't like sloppy joes.
|
Yes, we haven't made them in awhile.
1 lb ground beef 1 onion chopped Cook and drain Add 1 can of tomato sauce 1 package of seasoning Squirt of ketchup Squirt of mustard Splash or two of worcestershire sauce Shake or two of crushed red pepper 1 tsp sugar aprox. I do a shake or two Simmer until thick Butter and toast bun Top with meat, swirl of ketchup and mustard Plow with fries or chips |

That doesn't sound like a regular shitty sloppy Joe. |
I request fries with mine though.

You got it bud. |
I like mine from Sloppy Joes in Madetra Beach
|
Manwhich!
I'm in a sloppy joe coma while some of you are still deciding whether to squirt Frenches or Dijon into the skillet. |
I like sloppy joes, but my tastes seem to differ from most people: I love the McRib.
|
Quote:
That sounds difficult. Do you eat it with your hands or with a fork? |
Buns.

Hands. Tiny sandwiches actually have more structural integrity than other ones. |
i was inspired. i made white castle sliders. first time, damned good. too good too :D
|
Wife makes them with Cream of Mushroom soup instead of a tomato base.
Adds a scoop of Miracle whip. all on top of browned hamburger. I am not a cook and she throws it together differently each time, so I may have missed something. Calls it a tavern. Much better. |

I've never heard of this tavern nonsense. I guess I can see the cream of mushroom in a shit-on-a-shingle application of sorts.
Miracle whip as well?? Can't wrap my head around that. |
Correction
No miracle whip. See. I do not cook A small glob of ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, onion, salt, pepper Mylonsd- my wife is from SW Minnesota. |
I like them provided there's no bell pepper added. Just not a fan of the texture of the skin.

What about roasted? |

I think the name 'tavern' is a regional thing. Back in the day bars/taverns sold them especially at lunch to slaughter/packing plant employees which were big around here. The packers would go to the taverns that were close to the plant for a quick beer and lunch. The 'taverns' were easily made in bulk and served quickly. There are still plenty of them around Sioux City that are known for them. In fact that's what I had Friday for lunch at a local bar. Unfortunately I couldn't partake in the beer part because I had to go back to work. |

an aussie burger with the lot:
beef, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, beetroot, egg, pineapple, and bbq sauce. (no such a thing as a hamburger here, they all come with cheese) :D |

I don't know - I used to make a homemade pizza when I was married and that lady like green peppers - so i just slivered them so thin that the skin wasn't an issue - honestly no, I don't care for roasted much, either. :( |
not worth a thread itself, but... top three favorite spices?
Rosemary,
Thyme, Garlic. oddly enough, i had never knowingly ever tasted the first two on this list until i arrived in australia. even my mom, whom lives in kansas city, is not familiar with either. anyone else use these three? what about sage, and chives? i couldn't find another thread to derail better than this one. drunk posting and cooking tea. :D |
Quote:
Wow, really? I use the shit out of all of those except sage, and it still finds its way into my food 3-4 times a year. I currently have thyme, rosemary, and chives in my garden. I use thyme and garlic several times a week. |
Quote:
ive got a HUGE rosemary plant in the back, thyme as well. ive got an herb box on the deck with sage, garlic chives and rosemary again. i use rosemary more than i use salt, it feels that way anyways. |

I made a new version that may be my new go-to. It was really good, with just a background heat that was really good.
