Seriously, I don't think I've ever had Manwich. Mom always made ours, and I always make them same way she did.

I just tried a NY Times recipe, was pretty tasty.

alpha_omega 09-02-2016 11:32 AM

With a fork.....

1 pound ground beef
1 red bell pepper, diced
1/2 sweet onion, diced
1 can corn, drained
1 can sloppy joe sauce
2 ounces cream cheese
8 ounces cheddar cheese, grated
16 ounces tater tots
chives, for sprinkling on top as desired

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the peppers and onions until the meat is cooked through. Drain the fat and return to the heat. Stir in the corn, sloppy joe sauce, and cream cheese. Cook over low heat until the cream cheese is melted.
Pour the sloppy joe mixture into a 9x13 baking dish. Top with half of the grated cheese.
Arrange the tater tots in a single layer over the top of the cheese. Sprinkle the top with the remaining cheese.
Bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with chopped chives if desired. Serve immediately.

I think it's because I was such a hamburger kid when I was little that the texture threw me off when I ate one. Now, I won't refuse one if it's in front of me, but I don't go looking for one, either.

I'm not a fan either. A taco burger is the closest I get, but I'm just not a fan of loose meat sandwiches in general.

Yeah, this too. When I was a kid I couldn't stand my hands being dirty for some reason and those damned sandwiches go everywhere when you eat one, especially if you're a little kid.

The Franchise 09-02-2016 12:24 PM

Now you've "met" two. I can't stand sloppy joes. I can't stand the texture, the taste, and I hate trying to eat one without dropping meat back onto my plate.

Count me as three I'll certainly eat one if it's only thing on table but a burger is so much more satisfying and less mess. The canned sauce is rank I liked the McCormick powder tomato paste and peppers better.

Pablo 09-02-2016 04:53 PM

They're just OK. Whether made from scratch or from the can, it's never a meal I look forward to. I never come away disappointed either. The wife enjoys them much more than I do.

Cheddar cheese, chopped raw onion and dill pickle slices with a little mustard to top it all off.

Fire Me Boy! 09-02-2016 04:57 PM

Those of you that eat traditional sloppy joes (not the casseroles), buns or regular bread?

As a carryover from childhood, sloppy joes must be served on regular bread cut in quarters diagonally - giving small triangle sandwiches.

listopencil 09-02-2016 04:58 PM

They're fine. I cook hamburger until it just past pink and then drain it. Then I'll add a dry mix and cook it until very dark. Then I'll put the slop on a toasted bun and add as many hamburger condiments as I have on hand. I haven't made them since I stopped making dinner for my kids. That's all they really were; easy family meals.

Wife makes them with Cream of Mushroom soup instead of a tomato base.
Adds a scoop of Miracle whip.

all on top of browned hamburger.
I am not a cook and she throws it together differently each time, so I may have missed something.

Calls it a tavern. Much better.

Here we call tomato based loosemeats sloppy joes. All others are taverns.

Pablo 09-03-2016 12:50 PM

I've never heard of this tavern nonsense. I guess I can see the cream of mushroom in a shit-on-a-shingle application of sorts.

Miracle whip as well?? Can't wrap my head around that.

displacedinMN 09-03-2016 06:15 PM

No miracle whip. See. I do not cook
A small glob of ketchup, mustard, bbq sauce, onion, salt, pepper

Mylonsd- my wife is from SW Minnesota.

I like them provided there's no bell pepper added. Just not a fan of the texture of the skin.

Almost exactly the way my grandma made them. Minus the BBQ sauce and I think she added a dash of sugar.

I think the name 'tavern' is a regional thing. Back in the day bars/taverns sold them especially at lunch to slaughter/packing plant employees which were big around here. The packers would go to the taverns that were close to the plant for a quick beer and lunch. The 'taverns' were easily made in bulk and served quickly. There are still plenty of them around Sioux City that are known for them. In fact that's what I had Friday for lunch at a local bar. Unfortunately I couldn't partake in the beer part because I had to go back to work.

not worth a thread itself, but... top three favorite spices?

Rosemary,
Thyme,
Garlic.

oddly enough, i had never knowingly ever tasted the first two on this list until i arrived in australia. even my mom, whom lives in kansas city, is not familiar with either.

anyone else use these three?

what about sage, and chives?

Wow, really? I use the shit out of all of those except sage, and it still finds its way into my food 3-4 times a year. I currently have thyme, rosemary, and chives in my garden. I use thyme and garlic several times a week.

our family was never gourmet cooks. salt, pepper, and butter :D

ive got a HUGE rosemary plant in the back, thyme as well. ive got an herb box on the deck with sage, garlic chives and rosemary again.

i use rosemary more than i use salt, it feels that way anyways.

Fire Me Boy! 06-14-2017 12:25 PM

I made a new version that may be my new go-to. It was really good, with just a background heat that was really good.

Quote:

1 onion, diced
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 lbs ground beef
1/2 small can tomato paste
Large can crushed tomatoes
1 heaping tablespoon chili powder
1 heaping tablespoon mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Salt
Pepper

Saute the oil, garlic, and onion until translucent, add the beef and brown. Drain the fat. Back in the pan, brown the tomato paste with the meat and onions for a couple minutes, add the rest of the ingredients, bring to a boil and simmer 15-20 minutes until thickened.
This is really good, people.
