Stan Kroenke buys Largest Ranch in Texas

http://www.chron.com/homes/article/L...25-6818219.php

Professional sports mogul and rancher Stan Kroenke, whose holdings include the Los Angeles Rams football team, has been approved to purchase the iconic W.T. Waggoner Ranch in north Texas, representatives of the sale announced Tuesday.
The historic property, considered the largest U.S. ranch behind one fence, had been on the market for 18 months at an asking price of $725 million.
Terms of the potential sale were not disclosed, according to a news release from Perry Street Communications, a Dallas consulting firm.

WhawhaWhat 02-10-2016 05:49 AM

He plans to move the ranch to LA as soon as possible.

loochy 02-10-2016 05:59 AM

That's a lot of land. I hope he's ready to buy a new lawn mower.

It's not so much that you should care as it is an interesting little tidbit of info.

There's a Ranch just West of me that covers an area about 30 miles by maybe 20 miles and they just stocked it with Buffalo. It's an awesome sight. I bet there's at least 400-500 buffalo.

That's 384,000 acres. There better be more than 500 critters on there. Even at 20 acres per head that's 19,200 cows. I know buffalo are different but man. Not that different.

Yep, that looks like a new roof.

It's certainly enormous as ranches go, but when you do the math it doesn't seem that huge. If it was a perfect circle it would have roughly a 33 mile diameter. Yeah, that's a lot of land to own, but you could still drive from one end to the other in a half hour.

That's almost 836 square miles. Per Google, The City of Denver is 154.9 Sq miles.

This is very near where I spent half of my childhood (Wichita Falls, TX). The landscape there leaves something to be desired....

It's big enough to have land in 6 different counties. Look at the huge area this covers:

I'm honestly disappointed that there isn't a ranch in Texas bigger than all of Rhode Island. Square mileage of Rhode Island: 1,212.

EDIT: Dang, too slow...

We have 38 counties in Colorado that are bigger, if that helps.

Forget a Hollywood mansion, that sounds nice to me. Wide open spaces, peace and quiet, nobody around for many miles. Plenty of room for whatever you want to do. Sounds great.

Poco Bueno died November 28, 1969. Mr. Waggoner left specific instructions in his will that Poco Bueno was to be buried in a standing position in a grave across from the ranch entrance on Texas Highway 283. The plot of ground was landscaped with trees and grass. A granite marker, weighing four tons, was engraved with his name, picture and the inscription Champion and Sire of Champions. In 1990, Poco Bueno was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.

my guess is a while back there were some landowners that wouldn't sell and they (or their heirs) still haven't sold

King's Ranch is larger but not privately owned and not bordered by a single fence. It is those two things that differentiate it from the Waggoner Ranch that Stan just bought.

As to large counties, I thought that Coconino county in Arizona was the largest in the country at about 18.5K square miles but it turns out that San Bernadino is larger at a little over 20K square miles. Both are larger than Rhode Island though. :)

Mom asked her once if she had even seen these properties. She told her heavens no and never planned to. She lived the winters Hawaii and Costa Rica came back to Mission Hills Ks in Summer and this huge house she lived in was only occupied by Mom a Butler and Driver who were always payed on staff in case she did come to KC for business in Winter. She was old money but nice Lady dead now and Daughter is in charge.

Must be nice. I have a couple landlords that hadn't seen their physical asset until 2014, but they're not rich as ****.

Lot of Old Money in Mission Hills and very rich. Her Lawyers financial advisers generations of her family grew up and stayed. I suppose you can live where you please when you actually are a jet setter with a jet. This was a sheltered woman who's husband died unexpectedly had to learn fast. She hired people to help her as her children had very hard time growing up still haven't probably. My mom was an executive secretary for a large law firm this family kept on retainer. The old woman always trusted and confided in her. There are the rich and then the extremely wealthy the rich are jealous of. That family was that.

Failed to mention Kansas City area was home for generations of this family. Roots do run deep.
