Resources for the 2016 Chiefs Offseason
Where the Chiefs stand as of right now, concerning the 2016 offseason (all contract info per Overthecap.com):

Murray has to take Daniel's spot at this point, although Daniel has been very animated and involved on the sidelines all season long. Murray's dead money is virtually nil, so it will be interesting to see who they choose as the #2 backup option and if it's Daniel, what kind of contract they give him. I'm not too sure that he'll see another contract like the Chiefs gave him three years ago.
If Bray isn't replaced by a QB in the 2016 draft, I'd consider that a mild shock. Other than a huge arm, he hasn't been given any oppotunity to showcase his skills. The only way that they don't seriously consider a QB early in the 2016 Draft is if Murray has the coaching staff's confidence and Bray isn't considered a project any longer. Guys who are near locks for getting resigned IMO: Eric Berry Jeff Allen Dan Sorensen Jaye Howard Sean Smith Derrick Johnson Berry, Smith, Howard will take up a lot of the cap room with new contracts. |

I think this is a year you sign your own guus maybe make 1 free agent signing that's not just depth filler, and have a good draft
|
I was really thinking Muhammad Wilkerson would have been a slam dunk acquisition.
The Jets already have Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson. Wilkerson is a free agent. He has history with Bob Sutton. But then Jaye Howard took off. And he'll probably be cheaper to retain. Life is good on the Chiefs roster. We just need to retain our guys and draft well. |

Draft and develop |
Re-sign:
TE Demetrius Harris OG/T Jeff Allen DE Jaye Howard ILB Derrick Johnson CB Sean Smith S Eric Berry S Tyvon Branch Tender: RB Charcandrick West DE Nick Williams OLB Dezman Moses S Daniel Sorensen FA (other teams) Signings: Sam Acho, OLB, Bears |
So if we can or are able to afford 1 decent free agent, what position are we looking at?
I'm a bit interested in another TE |
Do we really need to be active in FA this offseason? I agree with Pest about who we should keep.
I think we should let Dorsey get his cheap free agents like Ron Parker and Jaye Howard and focus on the draft. I think that next year with few holes, you focus on the new guys this year to step up. Conley, Nelson, March, Wilson, Roches, O'Shags. Obviously QB is first priority, but if there is no QB is in the draft, I'd say WR, OL and CB are the top needs. |
I don't see Berry and Smith getting extensions.
Will be one or the other and it will go to Berry. Look for them to draft a CB early. |

Howard is just better value at this point, however, and he has the advantage of being essentially home grown. |

Berry will be a cinch to sign. So long as we get him and Howard inked, we can threaten Smith with the franchise tag. |
I know there isn't really a such thing as loyalty in the NFL, but I just don't think there is anyway Berry is playing for a different team next year. Sean Smith worries me.. I think he'll go to the highest bidder.
|
There's absolutely no chance Derrick Johnson or Eric Berry are playing for different teams next year.
Andy Reid and the staff adore DJ. He's not going anywhere. The Chiefs stood by and gave Berry every opportunity during his recovery. Berry doesn't want to go anywhere, and I guarantee you we want to make him a Top 3 paid safety in the NFL. I assume they're going to get Howard inked during the season. If that's the case, we can afford to play a bit of hardball with Sean Smith, and we'll have the franchise tag in our pocket if we need it. |
For the record, Sean Smith is exactly the type of player this team should be re-signing. Not only because he's very good.
The past TWO seasons we've punished him for some offense by putting his ass on the 2nd team defense. Both times, Sean Smith responded by playing his ass off rather than tanking. He responded by celebrating with his fellow 2nd teamers when they recorded a sack or pick six. Matter of fact, he celebrated just like they were starters in a playoff game. He's also been extremely well credited with Marcus Peters' development. This guy was a "lights on, lights off" player for the Dolphins, but not only has he becomes a lights on player only under Sutton and Reid, he's been a consummate team player on the field. Sign his ass, Dorsey. |
Yeah I hadn't even thought that much ahead in regards to the franchise tag. With him being 28 and likely getting his last chance at a big contract, we would have a ton of leverage. Just get Howard and Berry inked before it comes to that

Howard, Berry and Johnson are a lock. I wouldn't mind seeing Smith finishing his career here but he'll want a nice contract. If it comes down to him and Allen, I'd rather keep Allen and go CB early in the draft.
And Stephenson, Reid and Fanaika can go **** themselves. |
So with the Reid signing, how does that impact the cap room for the offseason?
Also, I believe the new salary cap has been announced to $160-ish could be wrong though. I think Jeff Allen deserves to be on the must-keep list. Same with Tyvon Branch. Him and Josh Mauga have to be considered the two of the biggest surprises of the year imo. Tender West, Sorenson, and Moses to reasonable tier offers that is team-friendly and will also attract other teams. Franchise Sean Smith, he's the type of player it was made for. (Guy you want one more year of at a price you'd probably have to pay anyways but only for a year instead of multiple). |
Sorenson is probably the worst player on our team that sees the field on a regular basis, alongside Frankie Hammond, who is a stop-gap while DAT heals.
This coming offseason is going to be a blast, because we know what we have now, we know who needs to go, and with another solid FA group and Draft class, we will be well positioned to contend on a regular basis. |

Updated to reflect the signings of Demetrius Harris and Jah Reid.
I will update our cap numbers when overthecap.com has updated them. |
D, would it be ok to unsticky this thread in favor of another?
