What is a truck?

I am on the coach and a little bored.

I get mad when some people call their SUV a truck.

My BIL called his Audi a truck.
I had a friend called his Ford a truck.
I saw a bumper sticker that said "Sorry boys, trucks are for girls" ON A JEEP COMPASS (with a man driving.
I own a Ram 1500 Pickup truck.

What is a truck? What is not a truck?

No, no, no, no, yes

GloucesterChief 10-30-2015 05:16 PM

Truck has a bed.

Just like anything you can't take the top off of is not a Jeep no matter what it actually says on the vehicle.

Toby Waller 10-30-2015 05:17 PM

is a hot dog a sandwich?

Baby Lee 10-30-2015 05:20 PM

The essence of a truck is transporting inanimate object [loads].

#5 has the most clearly delineated load area.
Any of the other four could qualify if the rearward area is open for load carriage. If it's filled with seats and kids and books and games, etc. It's an automobile or car.

It might be more concise to refer to the first four configured for load carrying as a transport van.

Brock 10-30-2015 05:21 PM

A pickup is barely a truck. 3/4 ton and up is getting warmer.

BigMeatballDave 10-30-2015 05:24 PM

If doesn't have a bed or a way to tow, it is not a truck.

And the entire vehicle cannot be enclosed.

An SUV is not a truck.

BigMeatballDave 10-30-2015 05:27 PM

Google images will give you your answer.

Rasputin 10-30-2015 05:29 PM

I call my Chev Tahoe a truck but 1 2 3 4 are not trucks.

vailpass 10-30-2015 05:29 PM

A hand cart. Skateboard axle. What you do when it's time to leave. Interaction with a person or concept.
And 5.

BigMeatballDave 10-30-2015 05:30 PM

Also, a non-passenger van is a truck.

BigMeatballDave 10-30-2015 05:36 PM

Trucks are utilitarian.

Yes, I know what SUV stands for, but they are very limited in what you can utilize them for.

SUVs are just glorified station wagons.

2. SUV want to be starter Ride.
3. Hope you have a spare Transmission Ride.
4. Lesbian/Tree Hugger Ride.
5. A Truck.

dred 10-30-2015 05:58 PM

I've been in debates with my redneck friends about this very thing many times.

Some of them even argue that my Avalanche is not a real truck since the bed isn't "separate" from the cab. It's more like a suburban to some of them I suppose.

The Missouri state highway patrol only classifies anything with an open bed a truck. No permanent top at all.

displacedinMN 10-30-2015 06:10 PM

Buehler-I remember that. It is definitely a truck. No argument

Dred-An avalanche is more a truck than and SUV. With an open bed when needed.
The old Ford Apache was like the Avalanche. A suburban is not a truck.

Rain Man 10-30-2015 06:34 PM

If it doesn't have an open bed, it's not a truck. Pretty simple.

The only gray area is vehicles like this. Then you have to get more detailed about chassis, because I don't think these are trucks.

A truck is something with a bed that can haul heavy loads

For example

If you are going to roll that way, the Ram listed above is a light duty pickup truck. Not a truck. This part of the world if it isn't hauling a load it isn't a truck. And half a ton isn't a load.

Grandpa bought it new. Dad got it in mid-80s. I drove it through HS until my Nova was street ready. Dad still drives it regularly. Even though he was an '84 as well, the '72 is more reliable and a better workhorse.

Only the Ram is a truck in those pics.

This drives me crazy. People have gotten lazy with the English language. I think I first noticed it maybe 15 years ago. People in tv and movies would say let's get in the car when they were driving an SUV or truck. I guess I've eased a bit over the years and can live with calling an SUV a car, but a truck is not a car and a car is not a truck.
