Windows 10

I love it!

My woes with using Yahoo mail on Windows 8 are now behind me. The mail app lets me combine my gmail, Hotmail and yahoo mail into 1 very clean interface.

Lots of other stuff I haven't even used yet. But so far 2 thumbs up!

Still haven't received my notice to download hmmmmm. Has anyone installed on a windows 8.1 tablet yet?

007 07-31-2015 04:33 PM

I have it. Went pretty smooth but it didn't give me the option for a clean install even though all the websites say it can be done. Guess I'll have to search for a USB install option instead. I don't like carrying over crap from old OS.

It won't appear unless you've installed all available system updates. Run Windows Update and make sure it's updated all the way.

Oh I have the Get windows on the tray at bottom right corner and signed up month ago said everything is good to go. Every time a check it still on the TY for reserving your windows 10. Also says im good as far as compatibility. I would do the work around and install not except for talking to people at work they got the home addition when they had win 7 pro.

I still need to update to that on my PC sometime this weekend.

Is there anything I need to know before I download and install? It'll keep all my stuff and won't wipe anything will it? I'm just a little antsy because when my brother was talking to me about computers when I was young he emphasized that I DO NOT **** with the windows files.

I'm on windows xp btw

Probably :banghead: I really am only concerned about my windows tablet and getting the miserable 8.1 off an see if any developers will actually convert android apps to run on 10. I wont hold my breath.

I maybe only one but I love Windows Media Center on win 7 and will hate to lose that.

I was shocked they removed that and made it a separate purchase on windows 8. Sounds like it is completely removed on Windows 10. I wonder why it was abandoned.

While in another thread I urged everyone to upgrade it, that was before Microsofts new privacy policy, and the outing that basically everything you send, have on the PC, or use it for can be recorded by microsoft, and used to target ads at you, given to the government, and anything else. Hell, they even store your bitlocker encryption key if you write to an encrypted drive. Sure, it benefits you if you lose it, but they can (and will, as provided in the TOS) turn it over to the government if asked.

MOST of the stuff can be turned off or blocked, but regular users wont even know they are being strip mined for info like they are a coal mine in russia.

I'll wait to see if the backlash causes enough people to get pissed off that they change it, or that there is more known and better tools to protect yourself and your info.

My secondary PC has been running the beta, and performance and usability has been solid. I fortunately created a local account, so m icrsofot doesnt have access to EVERYTHING on the PC, but some settings cant be turned off in the beta.

While most of the data collection is being represented as benign, the TOS specifically states Microsoft can do pretty much whatever it wants with it. INCLUDING but not limited to, targeted advertisements right through your OS. Another troubling thing is that windows update in win 10 uses your PC as a bittorrent client, uploading via YOUR connection, updates to other windows users. Not only is this ****ing stupid for the end user, its a massive security hole just waiting to be exploited. It CAN be turned off, but again, most users are too naive, or not tech savvy enough to figure it out and get it off. So yes, win 10 is stealing your bandwidth by default.

I could also go on about how windows will now set your network password to be automatically sent to your Facebook and other contacts, and the only way to stop it is to RENAME YOUR SSID!! with _optout.

Quote:

The European digital rights organisation (EDRi) sums up the company’s 45 pages of terms and conditions by saying: “Microsoft basically grants itself very broad rights to collect everything you do, say and write with and on your devices in order to sell more targeted advertising or to sell your data to third parties.”
Seriously what in the ****ing ****.

Now we know why its 'free'.

Not quite. Social media sites dont have access to every keystroke and file on your device, including keys to your encrypted disk, selling those to advertisers, while using your device and data plan as a server for its updates.

You can kill a vast majority of it if you just pay attention to the settings when you're installing.

DaveNull 08-01-2015 07:17 AM

^^ Yeah, I wouldn't say that. I use 7 at work and I'd almost be willing to go to 8 if it means not having to look at those damn transparent windows any more.

I'll probably upgrade to 10 after some extensive testing. I need to bring both the OS X and Windows side up a couple releases.

Right now, im going to wait until people dig in a bit and there is an easy way to turn off a lot of the stuff that there are no current options for besides registry tweaks and host file settings. While I can do those, I am taking a wait and see approach to it.

It doesnt send it to the government p[er se, it just sends everything (and I mean everything) to microsoft, who explicitly state they will give it to the government if they have 'good faith' there is a legal reason too.. meaning all they have to do is ask.

I wouldnt get too worked up as of now.. wait a month and I promise you there will be multiple win 10 privacy tools that will help you protect yourself.

Some of the stuff I dont mind giving to them, some I do.

Nobody who cares at all about their privacy should be using Windows 10 right now.

JD10367 08-03-2015 04:44 PM

I'm not fond of 10 so far. Too cluttered, too many options and stuff popping up, too many things of different shapes and access points. Call me an old fogey but I was perfectly fine with a simple frigging desktop where I clicked on a folder or an icon and that was it. I don't need stupid "apps" that make my desktop look like an iPhone.

Anyways, I just went into Privacy and basically went down the list and clicked every single selection to "Off". Not sure what else or where else I have to go in this thing to make it more secure but that's a start. No big deal, though, since I only surf for porn while on my iPhone using a private browser. :o)

Make sure beyond privacy that you visit your updating options, go to 'updates from more than one place' and choose 'pc's on my local network' over sending updates OUT to the internet using your bandwidth.

Then visit your wi fi settings and turn off wi fi sense

Quote:

There are a couple of things you’ll need to do. First, on your Windows 10 computer, open the PC’s Settings and then click Network and Internet followed by Wi-Fi. Under Manage Wi-Fi, disable all of Wi-Fi Sense’s features.

Next, you’ll have to protect your home Wi-Fi network and ensure that other users with Wi-Fi Sense cannot connect to it. In order to do this, you’ll have to rename your network’s SSID so that it ends with “_optout.” So, for example, if your network’s name right now is “MyISPstinkz,” you’ll have to rename it to “MyISPstinkz_optout.”

JD10367 08-03-2015 08:10 PM

I dunno it basically says the same thing is everyone else.

Turn everything off, but hey guys, if microsoft isnt misrepresenting in ANY WAY what it can do with your data, will never be breached, or called upon against you by a government agency to give up information on you, then you get cool features like voice recognition that where already available in totally non-intrusive ways prior to this!

Windows 10 pissed me right off with bad legacy AMD/ATi drivers. Constantly rebooting and causing BSOD. Went out and bought a new vid card and those drivers (AMD R390) are working fine.

I see. Well, if this continues I may go back to Win7. For some reason, I am unable to install and Linux distros on this laptop. I've tried three and all three installs fail to load. Its almost as if HP put a block on it somehow. I can install any version of Windows with no issue at all.

Linux on laptops has historically been a huge pain in the ass.

My scroll settings for my touchpad get nuked every time I reboot as well. Haven't found a solution to that yet. I just reset it after each restart, which is a giant pain given that it automatically reboots after installing updates.

I had a video issue (my brightness control) after I first installed, but I just installed the latest Win8 version from HP's web site, and it's worked fine since then.

Things like that are annoying, but are what I kind of expect as an early adopter. Hopefully they get it figured out soon though.

Is Synaptic your touchpad? Mine won't retain settings on reboot for it when i disabled pinch zoom on reboot. Always reverts back. Apparently there are workarounds like ****ing with the registry. Hopefully updates come out soon cause its annoying keeping my laptop on sleep and plugged in

My touchpad was giving me a lot of problems from the start (Synaptics on Dell). Driver app wouldn't usually load on reboot so gestures like scrolling wouldn't work. Fortunately it seems to have worked itself out with one of the Windows updates last week.

Yep - Synaptics (on an HP). I know it was still an issue as of a few days ago, anyway, but hopefully an update will take care of it soon as it seems to have for Miles.

This is why forced updates are bad. Especially when you are talking about drivers.

And its a rampant problem across systems of all configurations.

I still havent. Don't plan to until some time next year. Have one year to do it for free. Waiting for the kinks to be worked out and also curious to see how Microsoft plans on getting its money back from all these "free" upgrades. Consider me skeptical that Microsoft is handing out millions of free Windows 10 upgrades that they value at $119 a pop without some sort of "but" down the line.

Mine was fine until the last update, too. Now when I boot my laptop it beeps incessantly and won't continue until I hit the Windows key.

Another problem that arose is when my computer is in sleep mode the touchpad doesn't work when it wakes up. Again, if I hit the Windows key, it comes to life.

This is the upgrade from Win7 and I've heard there are more problems with that than the upgrade from Win8.

how old is the computer? I have a latptop that microsoft says can run it and win10 killed it.

It's custom built. The oldest component is a couple years old. The newest was bought yesterday. Very high end PC.

I made sure all the drivers were up to date and downloaded all windows updates. Tonight I'll try to flash the BIOS and if it doesn't work I'm switching to Windows 7.

There are a lot of people online who are having the same issue.

Seems fine to me, even seemed to speed my older computer up.

I'm on Windows 8.1 but bought the Stardock software for $5 to make it look and act like Windows 7. No issues. Get that damn pop up to upgrade for free Windows 10. **** that.

I deal with new shit all day at work. Just don't want to **** with drivers, updates and the privacy settings. Just get me to the mindless internet drivel, porn, email and sports stuff.
