Fox: The Last Man on Earth

Assume everybody already knows about it. Premier is tonight, early word is that it's very funny.

If you haven't heard of it....

That was pretty funny.

(And it is a half hour. That was two episodes.)

Seems like a concept that would be tough to come up with a whole lot of material.

Yeah, I'm not sure how you stretch it out over a season or more. But that's part of the reason I'm interested.

Silock 03-02-2015 02:21 AM

Holy ****, I'm laughing my ass off. This is awesome!

Gonzo 03-02-2015 05:06 AM

Not a bad show, actually. I was surprised.

Agreed. Does it become like 'Gilligans Island' where he meets a new kooky character each week?

mr. tegu 03-02-2015 05:23 PM

I really liked it. There were quite a few legitimately laugh out loud moments. Going in I was already of the mindset that the show probably couldn't last that long unless it severely deviates from the one (now two) people on earth. But if it did that it kind defeats the purpose of the show.

One thing I wish is that they went just a little longer in showing him on his own.

DJJasonp 03-02-2015 09:08 PM

I really enjoyed both episodes.

Somewhat edgy, definitely sarcastic and a bit risque for network tv.

Kinda reminds me of some of the stuff Chris Elliott did in the 80's.

My favorite line...."....what are those?"

"...those.....are....masturbatory materials"

It took me 3/4ths the way through the ep before I could place where I knew that voice from.

That's the perfect "oh my God anyone but ****ing her" voice. Torture...

And of course the last woman had to be ugly and annoying... "yeah we better be getting you back to your camp now" lol.

ROFL - funny, after reading some reviews that mark it down for being too misogynistic.

I think I'm done.

Pasta Little Brioni 03-24-2015 11:28 AM

Yeah the whole last two episodes were uncomfortable. Don't see it lasting another season.

Could someone spoiler tag the answer to this... who is the new "hot"guy that cock blocks Forte, haven't seen it on demand yet.

I'm guessing its some known name like Dylan McDermott etc.

If you're talking about the most recent episodes, it's Mel Rodriguez, not a hottie.

http://www3.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/6...LsqaAF_j0l.jpg

Haven't seen the 2nd episode with him in it yet, but he played a great role on HBO's Getting On, as Patsy, the effeminate nurse supervisor, who's actually straight and knocked up Alex Bortstein's character.

He was also the 'mark' that Slippin' Jimmy and his actual mark rolled for his [counterfeit] cash and [fake] Rolex on Better Call Saul.

Thanks, I actually managed to get caught up last night and was surprised at the choice of mystery guy, figured it'd be some hunk that would threaten to steal both women or something like that.

Wouldn't surprise me if this guy turns out to be a heel though, making up all those sad stories for sympathy... this last episode was the funniest one yet IMO.

ToxSocks 03-25-2015 01:05 PM

You guys are tough critics.

I enjoy the show. I will say that it did devolve into a more mainstream comedy. I was very intrigued by the 1st episode....but it has in fact become substantially more predictable now and much less interesting....but i still find it funny.

Rain Man 03-25-2015 01:15 PM

I've only seen the first episode so far, and really really wanted to like it. But it was kind of hard. This may sound stupid, but I was kind of bothered by the fact that he spent a lot of his time destroying stuff, and then at one point used the U.S. Constitution as a napkin. Really? I expected better than that.

DJJasonp 03-26-2015 09:17 AM

Im still enjoying it.....since I have an aversion towards anything that can be considered as a typical sitcom comedy, I like "fresh" ideas (if you will).

Last week's episode....love the "...I have a lot of experience with the fats.....you cant trust the fats!" lines.

Is it ridiculously stupid? Of course it is....so maybe that's why I like it.

Like I said earlier in the thread - Forte reminds me of Chris Elliott back in the 80s.

Because it's different and a bit non-PC........(and of course, since I like it).....it will get canceled!

Sure-Oz 03-26-2015 10:11 AM

Still funny but the main guy is trying too hard...

They need to change course from last week's episodes quickly. I stuck with those out of sheer obligation.

Yes, it felt like an 80's 'whacky guy' sitcom and it was pretty unbearable.

That said - when did airing back to back episodes mid-way through a run ever portend a happy ending for a show? That usually means that a network is trying to burn through the episodes it has in the can before it moves along.

We have some insiders here that are welcome to steer me straight, but it sure seems to me that having 2 straight weeks of back to back episodes means that they're just bleeding out the body at this point.

Pasta Little Brioni 03-26-2015 12:53 PM

Pretty much. Seriously doubt this show gets another season.

Silock 03-26-2015 07:19 PM

The biggest problem with the show is that it progressed WAY too quickly.

They should have had 3-4 episodes of just him. Introduce Kristin Schaal then, and let them go for a whole season, developing their love-hate relationship and exploring how bad they are for each other, and as people. And THEN throw in another person or two.

4 episodes to go from 1 dude to 4 people? F that.

Agreed (except on the still funny part). He's just over the top annoying with the whining for JJ. Had to shut it off half-way through an episode.

kcxiv 03-26-2015 08:50 PM

started off good, but them introducing another male sucks! If they were going to do that they should have way way later into the show. Women? sure introduce some. Ill give it another few episodes before i decide.

Here's a thought - maybe the seasons are largely one-offs.

Next year doesn't involve Melissa and Todd at all. Hell, maybe Carol's gone as well. The story doesn't really need her and perhaps is a little constrained by her.

Wouldn't the story have a longer life-span if Phil just gets tired of the 3 of them and jets? Onto a new town, new shenanigans. Get him out of the hot, arid desert and see what happens in the mountains, on the ocean, in the northeast. Send him to a major city like NY and see what comes of it.

This show has no choice but to devolve into a conventional sitcom if they choose to keep him where he is. However, if they just rotate cast/characters/situations around him, there's an actual lifespan there. They also kinda have a re-set button if an idea doesn't work.

Yeah, that would work for the storyline. But I could probably only get into the show if the lead actor changed his shtick.

Well it's a Will Forte vehicle so if you're not into Will Forte's humor, it probably ain't gonna be the show for you.

Like you, I'm not generally a huge fan of his, but I do think that his standard bit of 'everyday schmuck' humor works well for the idea. The problem is that they pushed him too far over the top.

If they get it back to where they started of him just being a goofball with below average smarts, there's still a lot that can be pumped out of the premise, IMO.

Exactly.

The problem is that the show appears to have started after all that.

This would've been a fun one-season arc stuck somewhere in the middle, but this can't be all the show is. It's run its course if that's the case.

Pasta Little Brioni 04-21-2015 01:25 PM

Also agree with DJLN, it will probably need to move from Arizona and keep the cast of people changing to stay fresh.

Or the virus mutates and kills everyone but him. ( which would be "off-screened" so they can start the second season)

It doesn't have to be serious at all, Phil can just say " Yep well everyone died" Like it was as common as washing clothes in a dark comedy manner.
