Wade Boggs claims he drank 107 beers in a single day...
With over over 3,000 hits and a career batting average of .328, Wade Boggs was one of the greatest pure hitters in baseball history. Not as well-known is the crown Boggs holds as the game's greatest pure beer drinker. Legend has it that the Hall of Fame third baseman once drank 64 beers on a cross-country flight from Boston to Los Angeles.
Boggs only denies that the number was 64. He doesn't say if the real number was more or less, only that it was "a few Miller Lites." It may seem unbelievable to us mortals that one man could drink so many beers on a single cross-country flight, but a little digging will turn up plenty of information to support the legend. On a radio show interview, former relief pitcher Jeff Nelson said that Boggs absolutely would drink "50 or 60" beers on a cross-country flight, explaining that the tally would begin in the locker room before carrying over to the drive to the airport, the tarmac, layovers, and any other chance he got as the team was making their way from coast to coast. "It wasn't just an isolated incident," Nelson concluded. "He did it almost every time." Last night, the topic came up again when Charlie Day stopped by The Tonight Show to discuss the new season of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In one episode, the gang tries to recreate Boggs's feat, and Boggs himself makes a cameo as part of a hallucination Charlie has when he's 30 beers deep. Day also claims that the stories about Boggs's drinking prowess are true, and that Boggs even told him that the actual number of beers he drank, the number he so smugly refused to divulge to Kornheiser, was 107. Boggs went down on hookers, so who knows? Ha! |
Bullshit.

That many brews could have knocked Andre the Giant's dick in the dirt!

I can do that in half the time /eSurance

bullshit.

If you consider that each beer was 12 ounces, which is a standard can or bottle of beer, that is over 10 gallons of beer, as there's 128 ounces in one gallon. That's a shit load of beer. Most American Kegs are 15.5 gallons. so he would have consumed about 2/3rds of a keg in one day. Also, assuming it was a light beer, light beer has about 100 calories in a 12 ounce serving. So that would be 10,700 calories in one day just for the beer and if he ate anything, those calories would be additional. About 1500 to 1800 calories are normal for a non-dieting average guy in a day. So, I think I'd have to say I've very skeptical about this claim.

The "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" episode with this last night was ****ing hilarious.
|
Wade Boggs only hit a foul ball to the right side once in his career.
|
Cocaine is a helluva drug.
Just how far off do we think his claim is? We all know someone that can put away a case of beer. I'm sure more than a handful of us know someone that can put away 2. 3 or 4 can't be that far off. |
so what is a cross country flight?..4 hours? 5?
that's something like a beer every 3 minutes. LMAO Riiiiiight. |

I remember a radio interview once -- years ago. The hosts were discussing this, and someone had mentioned the whole beer thing, and the legend of how many beers he drank on a cross-country flight.
So they called some baseball player that one of the hosts knew who had been a teammate of Boggs's once. One of the hosts of this show was an acquiatance of his and it genuinely sounded like this ex-teammate didn't expect this call. They didn't even explain WHY they were calling, they just said -- "hey, so, Wade Boggs -- you were his teammate right? How many beers would you say he drank when he flew cross-country" And the ex-teammate was like "oh, damn, yeah, he could put them down. Like maybe a hundred? Seriously, I've never seen anyone else drink like he could drink." FWIW  |

Boston to LA is six hours. |
for some reason i'm reminded of a thread I 'think' i saw on here years ago....wasn't there someone who posted pictures of their progress through some sort of drinking challenge. like 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes or something? Was it ENDelt?
|
Century Club is only 100 ounces in 100 minutes

I think the issue here is that after the 6th beer he lost count.

Here they're talking about it on the Tonight Show:

My first thought was, "Well of course he did."
Also, I think this may be possible. In my early 20s I weighed a strapping 140lbs and once put away 34 beers in one day. That day lasted from 10:00am until approximately 2:00am the following morning. I think if we're talking about 24 hours Boggs would have averaged 4 and a half beers per hour. I just can't imagine a human keeping that kind of pace. I want to believe this so bad. So goddamn bad... |
I doubt the 100 beers number but I could see the 60-70.
My best friend can put beer away fast. I've seen him kill 12 packs in under an hour without trying. With the amphetamines that Boggs was probably using back then, I could see him doing it. |

They said the 107 count included the ride to the airport, the flight, the layover, the hotel afterwards, then bar hopping before going to bed. So, let's say he started drinking at 8AM Boston Time, and drank till 3AM California Time the next day. Plus gained 3 hours in time zone changes. So let call that 22 hours of time including the time zone changes. He would have had to consumed five beers an hour, every hour, for 22 straight hours to do that. And that time frame would also include time to piss. In fact, he'd probably have to be drinking while pissing to keep up that pace.

I did the century club twice in one day with drinking in between, once at 11am start of KSU-Nebraska football game, and later starting at 8pm. Best drinking day of my career. Ungodly drunk. |

I can't imagine the hangover he went through if he drank that much while doing uppers.

I don't understand why you would drink anywhere near that number if you weren't doing uppers. I always felt great the next day.

We kept track of beers when a group of us did it. Some people went through 14, others went through 11-12. One of my friends (small guy with a large vag) even mixed grape juice with his shots. Wimp. |

This is crazy. These are 16 oz. beers... I assume from a tap.
André once drank 156, 16-US-fluid-ounce (470 ml) beers in one sitting. In her autobiography, The Fabulous Moolah writes that André drank 127 beers in a Reading, Pennsylvania, hotel bar and later passed out in the lobby. The staff could not move him and had to leave him there until the giant awoke from his slumber. |
Wade Boggs. The greatest 'singles' hitter of all times!!
|
The dude would have to be drinking while he was pissing to put down all that beer in only a few hours.
|
You can see any up and coming rock star drink that at any Guitar Center.
|
In college, I used to regularly (whenever requested by someone who wanted to witness it) put down 6 beers in one beer bong...which I would finish in what would seem like a few seconds. In retrospect, I feel stupid as hell about doing that.

Maybe it was one of those mini beer bottles. Then toss in a layover.

I bet I can throw a football over those mountains / uncle Rico

There was no count as it was out of multiple kegs, but I've seen a guy tripping on multiple squares of LSD put down probably a 100 or so beers. I could see it happening over 24 hr amphetamine bender as well.
|
Why can you drink more beer with amphetamines? I don't see the connection.
|
Sounds like bullshit, to put it mildly.
|
There was a contest in college called the dirty thirty chug, you would basically do 3 beer bong pulls of 8-10 beers a piece (yes some kids actually did it.) Most people would attempt, fail or succeed on the first one and then be entirely to sick to attempt a second. However, one kid who I think was named Mike or Matt or something, anyways, kid had an iron stomach. He did the dirty thirty in 3 consecutive bongs, then later that night did a fourth. By most counts he had about ~50+ beers that night from 5:30 pm to 2:00 am, by 3:00 am he was passed out, ended up vomiting a gallon of beer out into the bathroom floor, and damn near drowned in it in the process. 106 doesn't seem possible to me after witnessing this. Mike.. or Matt.. was about 6'2, 250+ lbs and had been a daily drunk since he was in High School.

The last time I drank light beer I drank a case and had a headache when I was done. I laid off the booze after that. That 100 oz beer challenge endelt posted years ago, I have no doubt I could get through that sober. This may be possible. I'm not nearly the biggest drunk I know...

My buddy back in the day was close to 310 and about 6' 3". I've seen him pack down a case and a of Coors Light and hang a guy by one foot from the emergency escape stairs in Mandalay Bay Hotel who wouldn't stop taking pictures with his cell phone during a bachelor party. He was on a couple other substances at the time as well (coke) that helped him.
This guy was a total animal as in if you didn't know him you didn't talk or make eye contact. He made it another 12 pack and passed out. Wade Boggs doesn't look like he ever broke 200lb. Hard to believe. |
