I'm on vacation. Sitting in a pretty empty train station. Spread out on a bank of chairs next to a plug in with my significant other. A lot of people come and go using the restrooms buying sodas but no one ever sits or stays for long. Got here at about 4pm waiting on a 630pm train. Anyway a big group comes in and people start taking chairs. We having a whole bank to ourselves (laptops and tablets charging) have our bags at either end if the bank while sitting closest to one end where the electricity is.

A big guy comes walking buy and sits in the bank of chairs opposite the side we are on. I decide I should move our bags together so that we aren't being rude and taking up more space than necessary now that we have company. After moving my bag I look up and this big guy is staring at me giving me the "eye". I ask him "what's up?" And he just shakes his head and sits down.

I'm like wtf. Does everything someone does have to be racist?

He should be happy you didn't shoot him.

I took a light rail home from work late one night because I thought it would be a fun experience. Walking up to the platform at midnight I started to wonder how smart I really was. All sorts of drunk and drugged men. Of various races and deportment.

At the end of the platform was a larger nerd looking guy reading a book. I walked up to him and said "you look safe, can I hang out with you?" He was super nice and hung out with me all the way to my stop.

But in retrospect, was I being insulting?

I automatically check that my belongings are secure though, whenever I see a black person that looks "shady" on the approach. It is what it is. It's not racist...it just is. Look at the statistics.

Maybe he just thought you felt uncomfortable, which if it made a difference...you did make a thread about it. not trying to be a dick here, but also maybe he doesn't have the same beliefs about space and felt you didn't need to move the bag. I have felt a little awkward about even something as slight move of the leg as someone passes, regardless of color, it's always a question of whether they want you to move or not.

I'm starting to think most people will sit where they wanna sit, and don't really care if you move away a little. They chose to sit there, afterall.

It's crazy, I got bitched out for an hour today because before a dude's car got repo'd we knocked on his door to let him know and try to get a key. He came out after not answering and accused us of "banging on his door like we were going to come in and shoot him" because he was black.

We were like, had no idea bub.

After he started doing the "hands up don't shoot chant" for the 30 minutes we were waiting on a tow truck. I said "just working, don't attack me"

I heard an interesting thing today, two long time friends, one black and the other is white. Agree on a lot of things except racism in America, among police officers in particular.

White guy says, "you'll never be equal to me until you believe you are equal"
Black guy immediately thinks the white dude is saying they're not equals.

White guys says, "I didn't say that, we are equal, but you just proved my point"

There is some truth to it, in my humble opinion, and not trying to send this to DC.

I can only point to one time where someone thought I was racist (at least that I've noticed).

I was working in retail when I was younger and stocking some shelves. The shelf I was stocking had inventory around the store so I could either walk a cart around or get the various items from their locations. I decided to get the various items from their locations since the store was small and it would probably take me longer to get a cart and get all the items.

As I was stocking back and forth there was an African American couple standing there looking at some items on the shelf next to it. About the third time I came back one of them said, "Look at this guy thinking we're trying to steal something because we're black."

That thought had never entered my mind. Unfortunately, if it were a white couple standing there it probably wouldn't have entered their mind either. That's the problem.
