Kansas fires Charlie Weis

Charlie Weis was fired as Kansas' football coach, the team announced Sunday.

Clint Bowen will be the interim head coach, according to athletic director Sheahon Zenger.

"I normally do not favor changing coaches mid-season," Zenger said in a release. "But I believe we have talented coaches and players in this program, and I think this decision gives our players the best chance to begin making progress right away.

"I appreciate what Coach Weis did with several facets of our football program. But we have not made the on-the-field progress we believe we should. I believe new leadership gives our coaches and players the best chance to make a fresh start."

Weis was in the third year of a five-year deal.

Kansas, 2-2 on the season, lost their most recent game on Saturday, a 23-0 shutout to Texas.

This is the standard we have at KU. Weis should have been gone last year. Now hire a real coach and not a bandaid.

The good news is Mrs. Clint Bowen is pretty good looking(former Miss Kansas).

Weis made a ton of money off of Tom Brady and the Patriots D.

007 09-28-2014 09:11 AM

You have to really suck to get fired mid season at Kansas. LMAO

Should be a good selling point for the next coach. $2 mil per win.

ArrowheadHawk 09-28-2014 09:26 AM

I would just like a coach that could go 6-6 on average every year. Is that too much to ask?

Dave Lane 09-28-2014 09:32 AM

Guy is the worst of the patriots trio. Hasn't gone anywhere and been even slightly successful.

The Bad Guy 09-28-2014 09:33 AM

He's one of the top paid coaches in the country and he won't have to work another day in his life. He's collecting big bank from KU and ND. 'Merica.

How about 8-4? With the occasional playoff appearance. Why not?

This tweet is 110% incorrect.

ChiliConCarnage 09-28-2014 09:44 AM

I don't know if I'm too late and Kansas has already identified someone new to be terrible at coaching football for 2 million dollars a year.. If not, I'd like to throw my hat in the ring.

Or, it could be the two conference wins in his entire tenure. Granted, you've only had three over the course of the entire Obama administration, so I guess Charlie had you guys on the upswing.

FloridaMan88 09-28-2014 09:48 AM

Why isn't the AD on the hot seat now as well?

Pretty much everyone saw Weis as a doomed hire from the start at Kansas.

He is, and they're going to force him to use a search agency on this hire and they're also going to make the search more public than the last one incl more donor input. Zenger isn't making this hire, it'll be done by committee.

'Hamas' Jenkins 09-28-2014 09:50 AM

Tom Brady is a living stimulus package for shitty coaches, players, and personnel men. The guy has to have brought various shitbags over $200 million in undeserved earnings.

I am not sure that is actually true in the case of Charlie Weiss.

I think he played a big role in developing a 6th round pick into a franchise QB, and actually did a great job of working with Matt Cassel's limitations and getting solid production as the Chiefs OC.

Charlie Weiss, IMO, is a perfect illustration of the Peter Principle at work.

Good call.

Guys like Lebeau, Capers, Weiss, and Norm-the-neck were all better coordinators than HC's...

tk13 09-28-2014 10:07 AM

I think Charlie Weis is actually a solid offensive mind. I'd hire him as an OC. He did a solid job under Parcells before he ever went to New England... and he actually played to Matt Cassel's strengths and made him look decent. And he was the guy Tom Brady actually came in under.

He was successful as an O.C. in K.C.. Guys like

Weis
Crennel
Turner
Capers

are quality coordinators who aren't cut out to be head coaches. There is a lot of that to be found in football.

Edit: Rausch beat me to it and named the same four coordinators, too.

Committee recommendations with input from donors sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Hearing a rumor that Kansas pulled the trigger now because supposedly Snyder is retiring after this season, and they want to get their choice made now versus having to do it at the same time as KSU. Interesting if true.

Neither program stands a chance. KSU is ****ed without Snyder.

KU might get lucky and get a flash like Mangino, but he will leave as soon as a better program (which is almost every program in the US) calls.

I think KU should recruit a legacy, somebody who can bring some excitement to the Lawrence, and maybe do some Porky Piggin' on the sidelines. How about David Jaynes? What's he up to these days???

The Bad Guy 09-28-2014 10:44 AM

Reid and Weis are pretty close friends. Charlie was at Vikings game and opener against Titans.

I doubt the guy works the rest of the year and just sits on his stack of cash rolling in, but I could see him working with Reid in some consultant capacity if he had the itch.

Didn't Weis have a falling out with McDaniels? I doubt he goes back to New England.

Jaynes was the top QB recruit in the country and originally signed with Bear Bryant. I suspect if he pissed in a Tuscaloosa fountain, hordes of those crazies would jump in and splash it on their foreheads like holy water.

I know money talks, but I would never jump ship from pros to college, especially in this day and age when the college guys are getting hired and fired as seemingly often as the pro guys are.

Mangino's team in 2007 went 12-1 and went to the Orange Bowl. If they hire a fat ass coach and he does that, it's OK with me.
