Original KC Masterpiece!
1 Attachment(s)
KC Masterpiece BBQ sauce was the first sauce to win the American Royal BBQ contest. Dr. Rich Davis sold his sauce to the Clorox Corp, the same people who make Kingsford Charcoal. They cheapened up the original recipe, and now it taste NOTHING like the original stuff. Shame really.
I found this in my local grocery tonight. It's kind of like retro Pepsi. This is a special 35 Year Anniversary bottle with the ORIGINAL recipe. They should make it like this all the time anyway. I don't mind paying $3 or $4 for a bottle of good stuff. The Clorox version is usually like $2 a bottle, because it's been dumbed down with lesser ingredients. The original stuff was pretty good, I'm looking forward to trying this to see if it tastes like I remember in the old days. |
Check the ingredients. Is high fructose corn syrup listed anywhere?
|
Nope, it uses cane sugar and molasses.
You can buy it by the case on line: http://store.kingsford.com/products/...ary-blend.html |
George post more pics of the chiefs cheerleaders

Sometimes I like to mix funnel cake with beef.

How long has it been since the change???
I don't remember but I wrote KC Masterpiece off a long time ago. |

I'm having a labor day party next weekend and firing up the smoker. These Floridians haven't tasted anything like the orginal KC Masterpiece. |

There is not a damned thing wrong with KC Masterpiece.

Lots of people like the current stuff, because they don't know any better. Taste a current Pepsi, then taste one of the retro Pepsi's made with real sugar. Same kind of thing. Big difference. |
My dad used to buy bbq sauce from this private individual named Hank in NKC.
|
There's a really good BBQ place in NKC called "Smoking Guns." Have you ever been there?

George, what grocery store did you buy that at? |
Apple Market, Independence, MO.
But you can buy a case direct from KC Masterpiece's website. |
I have always wondered about this.
I had read about it winning awards, and the fact that is a KC MASTERPIECE I trick myself into buying it every 4 years or so, and am always like "WTF...Seriously??" This explains it all. I would sell out too if someone offered me big dough for my sauce. |

As for Smoking Guns when they first opened in NKC I went there with some the crew. We had read all the awards the guy had won. We walked in the joint wasn't a soul in the place at lunch time. Looking around was 1st place ribbon and awards hanging all over the place. Then we got our food no smokey taste to the brisket. We all agreed the guy didn't take as much care in his joint as he did competition. We swore never to set foot there again and haven't. I have been hearing people giving it good reviews maybe it is time to give a second chance. |

I had Smokin' Guns at a catered event once, never been to the restaurant in NKC, so I can't really say much about them. I've had friends that have gone there and had a good experience. |

I would rather just drive on up the road and see ed at quicks... |
Heh...I was having lunch with a customer at Quick's once in the early 1990s. His car was stolen from the parking lot while we were having lunch. Awkward!

Back to KC Masterpiece I think that Sweet Baby Rays original is closer to the old Masterpiece from what I remember.
|
I'm buying a case to try it. I'm willing to ship a few to guys(free of charge)who can't find it in their area but wanna try it. Six in a case, and I'll probably use two at the most. PM me if you're looking for it but having trouble finding it.

I've always found SBR to be super sweet. Not to say I don't like it. Like George said, it has its uses. If I'm cooking in the kitchen, I've got no problem using it, or using it for dipping. However, if I'm going through the trouble of smoking some real barbecue, I'm not using a fake sauce. I'll make my own or use some from KC.
I'm in Louisiana which sucks, because even "authentic sauces" down here are made with high fructose corn syrup. I've been forced to learn how to make my own. |

K&M makes a good sauce, too.
|
One of the bad things about Rosedale's sauce is it has to remain refrigerated, so you can't really ship it anywhere. It's considered a perishable food.

I've got a few extra bottles if anybody wants one. Just PM me an address.

Still buy Heyward's sauce in the grocery here in KC. Not too many people went there, but it was right down the street so we went once a month growing up.
Drove back by and found it's still in business somehow 30 years later. |
I am gonna have to do some searching to see if I can find some of these in the valley of the sun.
|
All Kansas City style sauce is sweet compared to Texas or Carolina style (whether clear, red, or mustard).
