Updated: My dad just told me he has prostate cancer.
A rather odd short and to the point conversation. He told me had some bad news. He has a fast spreading form of prostate cancer. They are scheduling a bone scan and a couple of other tests to see how far it has spread. He said Dr said if it hasn't spread we can slow it down with radiation. If it has spread there will is little chance to stop it or slow it down.
My dad was rather matter of fact, almost happy sounding and was quick to get off the phone citing that he needed to call my sisters and the rest of the family. The oddest conversation I have ever had in 44 years. |
I'm sorry to hear. Hopefully he's catching it early.

My dad had prostate cancer & after surgery and radiation he seamed to do fine for a long time.
I remember winter time he would get heat flashes from his radiation and would blast the AC and freeze us out lol. That was dang cold in the family room. Best wishes he can over come it. |
What is it with some men and not wanting to talk to their Dr.s about their dicks not working right whether peeing or otherwise. Don't know which it is/was but mom says it has been bothering him off and on for almost 2 years and that they did biopsy 12 different places with needles a couple of weeks ago and all 12 locations came back positive.

My dad is 72 and his age has me worried about being able to beat it. |
Best of luck to your father and to yourself and your family.
I'm going through this with my own father right now, although his was caught early and didn't have the same scary overtones that your does. At least until a few weeks ago when they found something on an x-ray in one of his lungs. Now we're waiting on that. The more time passes, the more evident it's becoming that cancer has become a reality that we're all going to have to face sooner or later, with ourselves or with loved ones (or both). It's basically reached epidemic proportions (I have my own theories why - atmospheric nuclear testing, un-regulated food preservatives and additives, etc), and it's only going to grow. :( |

I have seen my fathers overall health really decline in the 5 years almost in stages after a car wreck which led to back surgery. He just never has truly gotten back to himself. |
Prayers for you dad.
My mother in law beat ovarian cancer last year. It's tough but fighting it is worth it. |
Good luck to you guys. My mom just passed away from cancer herself. Something called oat cell. Dies 4 weeks after diagnoses. I hope I go that fast when I get it.
Prostate cancer has way better odds. |

Prayers for you and yours, my dad died of throat cancer about 7 years ago, wasn't the cancer that got him, it was the treatment.
|
My father had it a couple of years ago, he's 72 now. He made it through the localized radiation treatment with very few side effects. Treatments took less than an hour.
He's been fine since. (crossing fingers) Best of luck to your pops |
Godspeed.

Make sure to get yourself checked down the road if you fit the age group, this stuff is supposed to run in families. This is a really common type of cancer in older guys, and there are many types of slow growing prostate cancers as well. Good luck OP. Although I kinda know what you are thinking right now, i also kinda don't... |
Prayers sent. My Uncle beat prostate cancer last year. Hoping the same for your pop

Prayers for you and your father...

My dad beat prostate cancer last year with proton therapy with little side effects, much better than having it carved out. Much less damaging than radiation which impacts all the tissue in between. My dad caught his really early with a PSA blood test. Praising medical science. Positive thoughts your way.
|
Got the results back on my dad. The cancer has spread but very minor. It has gotten to his bladder. They are going to surgically remove that part of his bladder. He is going to get radiation and hormone suppressing shots.
According to the internet and his Dr. dads chances for survival is almost 90%. |
Good news. Prayers for your entire Family.

Now we find my dad has stage 4 lung cancer. Known for a year, and he's actually doing pretty well, all things considered. Every day is a treasure. Prayers to the OP. It's tough. My old man was and is quite matter of fact about it. I guess when you get to be 78, you just don't worry as much. |
Good news! Keep him positive.
|
Hang in there. Prayers sent.

This is worth at least checking out man.. It's not right for everyone, but the results were spectacular for my dad. He was at a 9 on his secretion levels, and since his operation he has never been above one again, I think he is back to a .4? Anyways its worth at least looking into. No radiation, no chemo. Everything is done with ultrasound in a matter of hours.
H.I.F.U. (High intensity focused ultrasound) He had to fly to mexico to have it done, and pay 30k out of pocket. No bullshit though, blue cross blue shield cut him a check for I think 28k willingly and said they wished more would do it. I know it sounds a little wonky but check it out at least, it saved my dads life. It is the go to treatment in europe and asia, but you have to do some health test stuff to see if you are eligible. |
Feel free to PM me if you want more info, I'd be happy to ask my pops what info he has on it.

http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/canc...ltrasound-hifu It seems it's not for every cancer, but they've had pretty good success with prostate cancer. It wouldn't work for my dad, sadly, but this is good information. |

Yeah, pretty nuts right? It gets blackballed in this country for reasons I will never know for sure, but my hunch is that it has to do with the fact that it cures it in a one shot deal without any longterm revenue associated with it in the form of visits and drugs etc etc. I have honestly never had the opinion that health insurance companies EVER take a stance where they are jumping at the opportunity to pay out on a claim, but in my dads case they sent him a check within a week of being home from the operation, told him how much they appreciated his being aware of the other options out there, and to tell all his friends how great the experience was. LOL! When was the last time anyone ever had an insurance company tell their clients that right??? They mentioned to him how much cheaper it is to pay out on a one time claim like this as opposed to massive long term expenses and how much of a savings it was. We honestly thought we were going to be stuck 100% with the cost when he went to Mexico to have it done. We were straight up shocked when a check showed up at his house. It's been 3 or 4 years since it happened now and my dad is still doing great! Sorry to hear about your fathers situation though, it sounds pretty rough :( |
