Blake Bortles

Blake Bortles.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ayD9_uCz4K0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

When watching this guy play football, does anyone else confuse him with a sack of shit flying out of a truck?

I don't understand the hype about this guy. If someone does, please, PLEASE explain it to me... Why is this guy projected in some mock drafts to be selected #1 overall?

I spent a long time yesterday, watching Blake Bortles clips on youtube and to say the least, I am not impressed. Even in highlight reels, he appears to be the epitome of mediocrity to me. In freaking highlight reels!!!

He throws a wobbly pass. His arm doesn't appear to be THAT strong. His receivers are constantly making acrobatic catches due to his lack of accuracy...in fact, most of his highlight reels prompt me to sit there and think to myself, "whoa...who is THAT receiver???"

His release is very, very questionable. The talent he faced is "meh."

Can someone please explain to me what the big deal about him is, besides his size and Big Ben-esque pocket presence/scrambling ability? I am obviously missing something. Did he have an awesome pro day, combine or Senior Bowl? Did Gruden schlob the hell out of his knob??? WHAT??? WHY?!?!?!

Something about him reminds me of Gabbert... I think it'd be hilarious if the Jaguars selected him.

In58men 04-12-2014 10:57 AM

Gabbert will succeed in Harbaughs system

Yes they did... One of them went all 2010 Moeaki vs. 49ers in the endzone.

rico 04-12-2014 11:05 AM

The throw/catch at 3:08....that was a HELL of a catch...that's the one that reminded me of Moeaki's 2010 endzone catch vs. the 49ers.

TribalElder 04-12-2014 11:06 AM

This dude will be one of the better QBs from this class in my opinion

must take a first round QB ...

Deberg_1990 04-12-2014 11:28 AM

He's basically built big and stocky and has a nice arm.

Chiefshrink 04-12-2014 11:44 AM

Physically he is the ideal NFL prototype. Whether he can truly play is another question.

Eleazar 04-12-2014 11:46 AM

I guess we are at the point in draft season where everyone watches a youtube clip and declares a player they have never seen is garbage

Hey... at least I requested for someone to explain why he is highly touted... I'm giving him a chance and basically admitted that my knowledge about the guy is limited as evidenced by my numerous amount of questions about the guy.

And not that it matters, but it was clips...plural...that I watched. :D

So do you know anything about him? If so, can you explain to me, why he is considered a number 1 overall pick by various sources?

I've heard about his big arm a lot and I just...haven't noticed anything that has stuck out when compared to other QB's with big arms. I do notice that he is Big Ben-ish when scrambling under pressure to make plays, but the arm seems questionable to me... And the ball he throws appears to be wobbly quite often.

I read this comment where someone compared him to Andrew Luck. I read that and was like:

https://www.americarisingpac.org/wp-...e-laughing.gif

RealSNR 04-12-2014 12:46 PM

Because the state of Florida has a history of turning out great NFL QBs.

Or... maybe it's the opposite of that. Yeah, actually, I think it's the opposite.

To your point, because of Big Ben and Flacco the media will always look for any kind of QB drama whether legit or created. 'They love that power to lead the general uneducated sports eye by the nose'. And the GMs/Coaches love that they(sports media) LOVE that power to lead because it means they(GMs/Coaches) can play better NFL POKER this time of year;)

Who really knows what these GMs/Coaches 'really think'.

Everybody knows everybody in this league and they play NFL Poker all year long and especially this time of year. Because they all know each other they all know each other's main football fundamental philosophies when it comes to strategy, players,FAs,trading and especially 'The Draft'. And 'Wannabe Professional Athletes' Who Never Were Athletes' Complicit Sports Media immensely help in playing NFL Poker this time of year.

Dave Lane 04-12-2014 01:52 PM

I see a lot to like. He stays in the pocket so the OL junkies will be big fans.

Typically, good QBs who operate well in the pocket tend to make their line look better, not the other way.

mcaj22 04-12-2014 02:08 PM

he has the NFL body and teams love that shit. He's not fast but his size keeps him standing, he has a chance to shed pass rushers in the NFL i.e. a poor man's Big Ben. But that is usually the difference in converting a play when the rushers shed off you with poor tackling.

So yea like someone said this dude is an Oline junkies dream QB.

I don't think that Bortles is anything special. But then again, I don't think that any of the available QBs are better football players than the top 10 players in this draft. They're always going to be overvalued because they are typically the most easily recognizable "stars" of the NFL.

BryanBusby 04-12-2014 09:26 PM

That was a nice highlight reel of the UCF wide receivers.

I'd actually say most of the QBs this year that are touted as top talent players are in reality second rounders or lower. It's just the position that forces everything to be graded on a curve... There's at least twenty prospects out this year who are more talented with a higher ceiling..

Minnesota Vikings: Blake Bortles , QB , UCF
*** Trade 1: Minnesota trades a 2014 second-round pick, 2014 third-round pick and 2015 second-round pick for the No. 2 overall selection. ***

Then just one spot later he mocks this trade:

Atlanta Falcons: Khalil Mack , OLB , Buffalo
*** Trade 2: Atlanta trades a 2014 second-round pick for the No. 3 overall selection. ***

It's so comical that CP had people pimping Manziel over Bortles. Typical CP quarterback analysis though... brought to you by "Geno at 1.1"

****ing idiots liked Manziel over QBs like Bortles.

And as far as I know, none of the ardent Geno fans like Manziel over even guys like Bridgewater.

Would they have drafted Manziel over Dee Ford? You bet your ass, but that's not the point. The point is, you can't just take a misplaced QB opinion by someone and then say, "UHP! GENO!"

Because really, at this point Geno looks like a far better QB than Manziel. And he also looks like a far better pick than Eric Fisher.

There is only one place you find guys who can make throws like that throw Bortles made.

If you ever want to have a prayer of adding an explosive element to your passing game, get a R1QB.

Or round 2 if he falls because he's black.

rico 08-28-2014 11:33 PM

I believe I was off about Bortles being a sack of shit flying out of a truck. Kid looks pretty damn good...and it's weird watching it come from a Jaguar... Not used to them having a potentially elite dude behind center.

I will say this though... his passes seem to have an awkward, sudden downward slope right before the ball falls into his receivers' hands. It's weird. I think that is what threw me off when I watched him prior to the draft....gave me the illusion that his passes are wobbly. Hey, he's seemingly making it work... There's something unique about the way he throws the ball and the spin he puts on it that makes him totally unique, IMO.
