"Miracle on Ice"

Hard to believe that USA defeated USSR 4-3 to advance to the Gold Medal game in Lake Placid 33 years ago today. I still get chills thinking about/watching that game.

That was an amazing "once in a lifetime" event. Won't forget that one as long as I live. A bunch of college kids beat the most talented hockey team on the planet.

The movie the Kurt Russell was really good too. I have no idea how accurate it was?

Definately a top 3 moment in US sports history. maybe #1

I was at a kegger. The whole party stopped and watched the game. No one knew shit about hockey.

That movie is a must see. When he showed clips of the Soviet goalie you had to wonder if anybody could get a puck past him even if shot from a cannon.

Herb Brooks Penguins coach as well.

That still brings chills to me, just like it did 33 years ago.

Wasn't the game on tape delay?

Yep. Actually started at like 5 or 5:30 on the east coast. Was actually shown in prime time.

One of my best memories. Watching that game with my grandfather. First and only time I saw him cry.

It wasn't France, but you're right that they had to defeat someone else. I want to say Finland, but I'm not sure.

IIRC, the game versus the USSR was on a Friday night, and the gold medal game was on a Sunday.

Wasn't even a thought at the time and that clip gives me chills. The movie was sensational, Kurt Russell nailed that role.

Damn, that's awesome.

Herb Brooks' best quote was during the Finland game. Something along the lines of

"If you guys lose this you'll take it to your grave. To your ****in' grave."

okcchief 02-23-2013 12:25 AM

I was only 9 and still remember it well. Definitely my most vivid hockey memory.

displacedinMN 02-23-2013 07:30 AM

I didn't know jack about hockey, but remember seeing it.

great day in American history.

Bless Herb Brooks too- died in a car accident north of the Twin cities. Still a few flowers around that area.

A legend around here.

GloryDayz 02-23-2013 08:08 AM

What a great day that was.... Thanks!

I would go Jesse Owens powning the Olympics right in front of the Fuhrer and a big **** you salute. We didn't tip our flag during the cerimonies.
