Pope Benedict to resign at the end of the month

Rome (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI will resign on February 28, his spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told CNN Monday.

The 85-year-old pope is resigning "because of advanced age," Benedict told the cardinals of the Catholic Church on Monday.

"Strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me," the pope told the cardinals, according to the Vatican.

The last pope to resign was Gregory XII in 1415. He did so to end a civil war within the church in which more than one man claimed to be pope.

Benedict, the 265th pope, is the sixth German to serve as pope and the first since the 11th century. He became pope in 2005.

He has led church after the third-longest papacy in church history and during a time in which the church is declining in his native Europe but expanding in Africa and Latin America.

Benedict's time as pope has been marked with a series of scandals and controversies, including hundreds of new allegations of sexual abuse by priests.

Considering this hasn't happened in centuries and the pope has a direct line to the guy that decides the outcome of super bowls, this is kind of a big deal.

I wonder if the college who picked him took into consideration that when asked if he will perform ALL Papal duties, including doing Pope stuff when he is unable to walk or talk, Ratzinger said, "****. That."

That really depends on how you define "participate." If you mean they knew of the allegations and did not go to the police, then a huge percentage. If you mean they actively abused kids or assigned them to a different assignment, then it's a very small amount.

Consider an average Catholic high school in 1961, with 8-15 priests on staff. I don't think it's outrageous that 1/3 of all Catholic high schools had some incidence of abuse. If there was an allegation, the parents would tell the principal (a priest) [note: many abused children did not go forward, understandably, because of embarrassment or fear], who would tell the Archdiocese (priests), and the priest would most often be sent away soon after or given a handslap/verbal reprimand and told not to do it again or else.

But I have to imagine that all of the priests on staff would have known of the allegation, especially if a week after, Fr. _____ was gone.

If you knew children are being sexually abused and you don't notify authorities, is that not a crime?

Ask Penn State's QB coach.

saphojunkie 02-11-2013 10:44 AM

On a personal note, I am Catholic. I loved going to mass.

I can't bring myself to really celebrate as a Catholic anymore, and I certainly have stopped all monetary donations to the Church.

I just can't accept that my money would go towards the comfortable lifestyle of a child molester, or that it might be used to fund hateful anti-gay-marriage propaganda.

That's not what I believe, and I just can't support it.

I look forward to the day when the Catholic church has purged itself of their corruption, but I think that day is a long way off.

The sad thing is that, no matter the religious institution, it is populated with human beings and is thus utterly corruptible at every level. I think the first step towards a "clean" church is transparency. Complete and total transparency.

Explain.

Because you compared voluntary donations to a tax-exempt religious group that I have zero control or influence over to a non-voluntary taxing to a democratically elected government for which I am given the ability to vote for both elected officials and policy at the city, county, state, and federal levels.

Your analogy is shit.

12 years catholic schooling.

Cousin was (deceased) a priest and a cousin who's a nun.

Was an (unmolested) alter boy from grade 2 to 12.

When I was in 8th grade we had a priest in his early 20's excommunicated for nailing women after weddings he presided over.

No, he wasn't perfect. Yes, he sometimes left the wine unattended when we did funerals. Yes, catholic mass wine tastes like the urine of diseased African children.

Because if you were truly principled, you'd do just that. Anyone can claim to be principled when it doesn't cost him anything. Instead, you posted some bullshit about being Catholic while berating the church for a significant plank of the church itself, which is the opposition to homosexuality and gay marriage. You're either not at all Catholic and trying to stir shit up, or you're a Catholic in name only, and haven't bothered to follow the actual teachings of the church.

It is today. In 1960? No, you, as a servant, reported it up to your master. You had no duty to report it to police.

Understandable, but the heyday of active sexual abuse was decades ago, and I don't know of any hateful anti-gay marriage propaganda spread by the Church.

Dunno. Ratzinger had a shitty record on child molestation, though.

I'd say pretty large. I think the molestation thing was a significant percentage, but that'd be, what? 10%? 5%? 3%? Then you have the bishops and cardinals handling it (who take a huge percentage of the blame), but I doubt it was a matter of widespread "participation" in the coverup for the thousands upon thousands of local priests. Even if they heard the off rumor once in a while, that's not participating in a cover up...

Actually the percentage of offending priests is less that 2% of active priests at the time. The problem was the coverups, and the multiple offenses that one guy would have.

Why was he buried in his priest robes? All due to one man. The beloved Pope Benedict.

I watched this movie over the weekend. It was horrific yet, superbly done. It is amazing how two thousand years of tradition is being brought to its knees by something so vile. The courage of the survivors and the pursuit of justice and answers amidst such blatant evil reminded me of Viktor Frankl's book, "Man's Search for Meaning".
