Books that ****ed you up
there is really only one book that left me disturbed for quite some time after reading it, and it is Aztec by Gary Jennings.
Has anyone here read it as well? Did you feel the same way, and are there other books that leave you with a similar feeling? Quote:

Think I'd have to go with the Exorcist for a book that had me thinking Holy Shit Balls.
Much better than the movie http://i413.photobucket.com/albums/p...3/exorcist.gif |

if any of you read this crazy book, the point that really did it for me was realizing what it was that made the disfigured glob of a person drain tears

Nazi Doctors: Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide by Robert Lifton. Most disturbing book I have ever read; human beings are capable of obscene and unspeakable horror and can compartmentalize the same with ease. My mother in law is a retired nurse and gave it to me about 10 years ago (we exchange books quite often), and it took me three months to get through it.

Desperation by Steven King ****ed me up for a week or so.

I don't think I've ever read a book in its' entirety lol.
I don't have the attention span to get into one. |
The Monster at the End of This Book really messed with me. I kept turning the page thinking that there's be a monster and I was soooo scared. However, my morbid curiosity got the best of me and I kept turning the page.
Spoiler!

American Psycho was pretty gross. Parts of it made me slightly ill.

The Kite Runner. Not the sort of book I would have bought myself, but someone gave it to me as a gift. It was a good book, but it was very, very, very sad and disturbing. Don't like thinking about it. Wish I hadn't read it. Ewww.

Gerald's Game - Stephen King.
Read tons of SK's books, perhaps most of them. And while many of his books are 'scary' there was enough of the supernatural for me to say 'scary story, but could never happen IRL.' But Gerald's Game is the story of

And it was sufficiently realistic and plausible [evidenced by the subsequent real life incident mentioned in the spoiler] to totally wig me out. |
I only read nonfiction books.

The Road, I guess. I wouldn't say it ****ed me up, but it did have an effect on me. I would be outside in the cold and rain and think, "What if this really was every day life?" Kind of made me appreciate the things I have. It stuck with me for quite some time.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.“

Blood Meridian. I wasn't as disturbed by the Judge as some people seem to be but some of the descriptions of violence in this book made me physically ill.

I'm in the middle of Insomnia now, it takes a while to get going I presume... (As with most SK books). I was thinking about starting Desperation next.
I guess the only one that really blew my ****in mind was IT. The ending was so bizzare. |
Watching again now, not a book but a TV episode. Episode 4 of American Horror Story this season.
A bunch of really creepy shit being covered up because those who know 'the truth' are homos, alcoholics, or sexually active teens. Such a corrosive and slanted message. Don't have a beef with 'the other' but to suggest that the world is an amalgam for pure evil distilled for the sole purpose to keep them down is disturbing in 2012. |

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. While the overall story is about the strength of a father and son's relationship, the world they live in is dark, dismal, and depressing. It was very hard to read at times. Both creepy and heartbreaking.

The only other book I've ever HAD to put down was American Psycho. That book is so ****ed up. Other books that messed me up: Blindess by Jose Saramago, The Road by Cormac McCarthy and Senseless by Stona Fitch. |

What makes it worse is that he'll juxtapose an unbelievably violent, misogynistic, torturous scene with one of the funniest things you'll ever read. It's laugh out loud humor somehow makes the violence worse. It's a messed up book. I'm glad I read it, but I won't ever read it again. The film gets the point across and is more successful. The book is overkill (no pun intended). |
