Word around the league is that Jon Gruden is in line to rejoin the Raiders
• Jon Gruden has been out of the NFL since his abrupt firing by the Buccaneers in 2008, when inside sources said the players turned against his hard coaching style. Known for his admiration of John Madden, many executives around the league believed Gruden was destined for a prime-time role in the broadcast booth and would seek to spend the rest of his career there, capitalizing on the naming rights involved with the video gaming world that reportedly have generated more than $100 million for Madden. While spending the past three seasons working for ESPN on Monday nights, Gruden also has not stopped spending extensive time grilling and getting to know the next batch of quarterbacks to come through the NFL in his annual "Gruden's QB Camp" series, logic would indicate, in preparation for the next coaching opportunity. The latest scuttlebutt in the league has Gruden, on the brink of turning age 50, in line to rejoin the Raiders' organization in a prominent role. The franchise’s downturn can be traced directly back to his departure a decade ago, he has a relationship with GM Reggie McKenzie from their time together in Green Bay and he has an even better understanding of the infrastructure in Oakland and the Al Davis brand of football than anyone in football. With more autonomy to run the organization how he sees fit, adapting a model that Davis taught him, Gruden is very well-positioned to resurrect a faitering franchise that went 0-for-November and has yet to win a game since owner Mark Davis put everyone on notice and said he was not pleased with the direction of the team.

Good....and then trade for Tebow.
|
What's Gruden's understanding of the "Al Davis brand of football"? His teams there played anything but that.
|
Chucky back with the Raiders. Hmm. Now if the Davis family would sell to Patrick Soon-Shiong, the Raiders would be up there with the Cowboys in value.
|
I'm in favor of anything that gets him off of Monday Night Football. And this should do it.

This guy has an outstanding arm. He can make all the throws.
-Jon Gruden, every Monday night |
I don't have to watch him act like a buffoon when Geno goes on Jon Gruden's QB camp at least.
SO YA GOT YER SPEEDY WR IN TAVON AUSTIN RIGHT HERE SO JUST LET'EM DO ALL THE HARD WORK AND MAKE A PLAY, SEE? YA GET THAT GENO? GENO WHAT KIND OF A NAME IS THAT? WEIRD NAME. LIKE EUGENE BUT WITHOUT THE EU IN IT. YA GET THAT, GENO, IT'S A JOKE. HEY YA EVER WATCH ROBERT GRIFFIN III CUZ YA KINDA REMIND ME OF HIM CAN'T QUITE FIGURE IT OUT WHAT IT IS THOUGH. |
"I like this Matt Cassel. Books not out on him yet. Too many different offensive coordinators."
|
Chuckie to the Raiders.....I have a hard time believing with all the openings that come up that he would pick to go back there.
|
Shocking that an overrated former Donkey D-coordinator is failing. He wasn't that good at his previous job anyway. Can't wait for Herm DelRio to resurface, hopefully in Eggo.
|
So they're going to dump Allen after 1 year?

What a crock of holy shit balls
Just last week Gruden was going on & apologizing about suggesting he would return to the NFL. He likes his gig at ESPN MNF. I call bull shit on OP. |
Reighters just raped a pulled pork sandwich after reading this.
|
Gruden is SUCH an overrated coach, it's not even funny. He won a Super Bowl with Dungy's players against a team that ran his same exact system. After that, nothing but mediocrity.
Please do hire Gruden, Raiders... then the Chargers won't be tempted to pick Gruden over Cowher. |

No way. There is bad blood between Gru & the Raiders.
|
Don't make me hate you again Chucky!

I hope they hire him today. The sooner he is not on MNF the better.
|
I don't know why Gruden would go back there.
makes no sense |

Al Davis is dead????

I don't believe any of this crap. Gruden could have about any vacancy he wanted, I don't think the black hole would be his first choice.
|
"I really like this Matt Cassel." "I tell ya what, if you give this guy a clean pocket, he can really dice ya up."
LMAO, freaking jackass. |
IMO he stays with MNF or goes to SD/Dallas.. ..
Raiders.... No.. |
OH THIS GOD DAMN TYLER PALKO. I WILL TELL YOU MIKE... HE ****ING ****ED UP DEFENSES UP ALL THROUGH PRACTICE THIS WEEK. HE HAS A HECK OF AN ARM AND.WATCH AS HE SLIDES AROUND LIKE STEVE YOUNG TO THROW THIS BALL RIGHT ON THE MONEY TO THE GROUND THAT ****ING SHIT WAS A THING OF BEAUTY.
|
Isn't Gruden's agent Bob Lamonte? The same guy who represents Walrus and Andy Reid? The same guy who has been pushing Walrus and Andy Reid's name out there for other coaching jobs recently? The same guy who probably was pushing Gruden's name for the Tennessee job recently just to make it appear like his client was really sought after?
I wouldn't put too much stock into it right now. Wouldn't be surprised either if former Raiders employees who were let go by McKenzie are pushing this... |

Barkley going to the Faid.

Gruden seemed to be legitimately getting his mind blown by the zone read Carolina was running the other night on MNF.

What one thing Jon has is motivation. He made those guys, Saap and Lynch believe that they could win. He knows football. You can't listen to him for an hour talking just real x's and o's football and tell me he doesn't know his shit. If you don't like him as a person fine, but the guy knows football. |

So the Bucs were losers before Gruden arrived? And if he knows so much about football, why did his teams become progressively worse each season until he was fired? |
Gruden is a really, really interesting candidate. I'm not saying a good candidate. But an interesting one.
He ran West Coast as a coach. Yet has spent a ton of time studying up on Chip Kelly's offense. What will his new offense look like? He ran Tampa 2 as a coach. But Tampa 2 has changed a ton even when Monte Kiffin was with Tampa. How much will Gruden rely on Cover 2? In a lot of ways, it's hard to predict what kind of coach he will be the second time around. |

Wouldn't surprise me at all. I would take Gruden in a second.

If this happens, I bet Barkley ends up in Oakland.

Barkley will do enough in Grudens WCO to go 8-8 year-in and year-out.
Perfect. |
All the more reason we must fire Romeo and Pioli ASAP.

No thanks.
We bring Gruden in...you can say goodbye to Geno. |
If he plans on going there, then my guess is that the Raiders will be in LA soon.
|
I heard he was pushing to get Al to hire him in 2009- Word is he has a good relationship with Marc Davis the new owner- Kinda makes sense- Gruden loves those older vets- Palmer would be a perfect player for a Gruden WCO

IMO he would be a great hire because he would find the right QB. |

He will draft a QB as soon as he is hired. |

No, the Bucs took him before Gruden.
|
Damn, Gruden could have picked Aaron Rodgers in 2005. Fail.

And he'll want to draft Geno over Barkley. He's not my top choice. But people have to get it out of their heads that he's going to be a stickler for WCO. |
Other than that I don't see any QBs Gruden passed on that he should have taken. I mean he could have taken Drew Brees with the Raiders but...meh.
A lot of teams passed on Rodgers. |
Quote:
What makes you think Gruden will all of a sudden change? |
Gruden describes at least one QB every monday night as "as good as anyone in the league today". I hope that's for TV and that he actually more discerning than that.

I'm just at the point where I don't really want to hire a guy based on the fact that he might "change" his previous philosophy. Seems these guys don't tend to change very often. |
