Schefter: Sean Payton's Contract Voided
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/85...fl-sources-say
Within the past year, the multiyear contract extension the Saints announced for Sean Payton in September 2011 was voided by the NFL, making the suspended head coach a free agent after this season and casting questions on how long he will remain in New Orleans, according to league sources. Payton is expected to become the NFL's most sought-after head coach after this season and there already is speculation in league circles that he could wind up returning to Dallas, where he worked as the assistant head coach from 2003 to 2005, during which time the Cowboys brought in quarterback Tony Romo, who attended the same college, Eastern Illinois, as Payton. Just as Payton's role in the bounty scandal has been an ongoing saga with the NFL for the past year, so has his contract. As recently as March, when Payton was visiting NFL offices to appeal his yearlong suspension in the bounty scandal, he asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the status of his contract extension and was told it was unsatisfactory as it initially was constituted, sources said. At issue in the contract was one specific clause that would have enabled Payton to walk away from the deal if general manager Mickey Loomis was suspended, fired or left the New Orleans organization, sources said. The league believed that any such language in Payton's contract would set a bad precedent for other coaching contracts and rejected the deal well before Loomis was suspended for the first eight games this season for his part in the bounty scandal. Dating back to roughly the start of this year, the two sides engaged in numerous subsequent conversations to try to resolve the issue but never did. In the interim, the league has granted Payton permission to work for Saints owner Tom Benson's NBA New Orleans team, and the suspended head coach has been doing some spot work there to earn income. Some in the league office believe Payton's contract could toll -- meaning the last year would be put on hold, tying him to New Orleans for the 2013 season -- but there is no evidence to confirm that possibility. Until now, the league has not been asked to review or rule on the contract, according to sources, though some believe it eventually could. To others, there is no issue. Payton will be a free agent. Some believe Payton's strong relationship with Benson will be enough to keep him in New Orleans long term. But others are more skeptical, knowing that the suspended head coach has undergone some personal changes in his life that have included going through a divorce and spending plenty of time in Dallas. When Benson initially announced last year the extension for Payton that never got league approval, he said: "I am very pleased to announce this contract extension today for Sean that will run through the 2015 season. Our goal is to continue to build a tradition of winning here in New Orleans and Sean represents that tradition." |
Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.
The whole thing. |
Wouldn't that be nice.
|
Pioli is returning...Payton won't even bother.
|
Well.. CHunt needs to let go of some of that coin.
|
Yes, please.

And even if he didn't, why would SP want to KC and start from scratch? |

He is still most likely going be in New O'leans I don't see him going anywhere. They want to stick it to Roger Goodell when he comes back.

If Payton wanted a clause in his contract tying him to Mickey Loomis he will not be leaving NO

He has attained mythical status there, nawlins will burn the sky before they give him up to dallas or anyone else.

I'm in.

Yeah, as sweet as it would be to bring him on board here, I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet. I suspect that he will return to NAWLINS.

Would be nice anyways, but for some reason anything better is too much to ask for :( |

He will not leave NO.

He's going to New Orleans or Dallas. He lives in Dallas, is friends with Jerry, and went to the same college as Romo. He likes working with Romo. That said, I bet he stays in New Orleans.
|
So, he's not going to NO or Dallas then. Glad that's cleared up.

If he's willing to put a bounty on Pioli, I'm all for it.

Hes going back to new orleans.
Not only would he want to stick it to Goodell, the saints know what they are without him. They will throw a small fortune at him if he even considers another team. |
Just wondering. What would he have done without Brees?
We need a game changer QB. |

He is good with QB's. He also made Romo look lost ever since he left Dallas. |
It's all coming together!
|
Absolutely!!!
But Pisoli will bring in Mangenius more likely. |

Can't believe that there hasn't been anyone say no and compare his teams to Vermeils all offense and no defense.

Yeah, maybe we'll trade for Eli Manning and Larry Fitzgerald while we're at it.
|
y'all ready to hire Loomis? because if SP stipulated Loomis' exclusive employment in his contract, he isn't planning to sign on with another train wreck like KC unless he gets his boy in there too.
Ol Sean could be looking at J-Ville or StL, Detroit perhaps. Certainly could be looking at KC with all the familiar systems and some players in place to run them. But, if he's married to Loomis and I think he is (unless of course he goes with JJ), Pioli would need to be removed. |
And Clark's master plan of living in Dallas finally pays off.

But is Loomis leaving the Saints? Doubt it. |

Oh God, if he came here with Breesy...
Too bad neither will happen. :deevee: |
Getting nailed for cheating has never been so profitable for a man. He's going to be able to squeeze the Saints for truckloads of cash after their performance without him.

Ironic, I guess, if Payton did end up here. |
Let him pick his QB and give him a blank check. Clark needs to make a statement!
Having said that, JJ will never let him leave Dallas (Sean just bought a house there) |
Quote:
Well, that's likely that. |

Okay, we will make a trade. |

I would be shocked if he left NO, but if he did I bet he would wind up in Dallas. Him and Jerry Jones are tight.

And there is our new coach

Chiefs stand a better chance raising Lombardi from the grave then signing him.
|
Let me get this straight, Yall are gonna be the worst team in the NFL and get the first pick plus get one of the best coaches in the NFL + Fire your GM + Get Clark to come off that wallet in one off season. LMAO

The clause could also have been put there to let Payton have a say in who his boss would be if loomis was gone for whatever reason.
And it also shows he thought something was going to happen to loomis. I can't believe someone hasn't said we couldn't win a super bowl with him because no one has won with two teams. The planet is slipping Posted via Mobile Device |
Offer him everything.
|
it's just a weird clause issue
They will change it and he will sign another contract with the Saints. |
I'm in.

I'm not sure any self-respecting player or coach would come play/work for the Hunts. No matter what, Clark decides who GMs here, and his "F*** the Fans" mentality and disdain for this city will probably always result in the low-quality players and coaches revolving through here as long as they'll not complain and just be happy with a check. It the single most important quality required by a Hunt-owned employee.
|
Clark needs to offer him his choice of GMs to get him in the door.
