Next Gen Kindle Fire
Anyone know anything about this? I think I want.
Amazon’s New Kindle Could Come in September By Andrei C. | Jul 17, 2012 Add a comment .Posted In Android, Games & Gadgets, Mobile Devices Reports are that Amazon’s new Kindle Fire will be unveiled in September. The new device is expected to come with an improved display, both in terms of resolution (1280 x 800 pixels) and PPI (216), all on the same screen size. It will also be lighter, thinner and feature a built-in camera, although it’s not clear if it’ll be front-facing or not). All of these details come from AllThingsD. I’m betting the new Fire will include an improved chip, maybe a Tegra 3 Quad-Core. The New York Times says the device “could compete more directly with the iPad, according to a developer briefed on Amazon’s plans who did not want to be identified talking about unannounced products.” Ironically, the Kindle Fire’s strongest feature isn’t within the device itself: It’s Amazon Prime membership, which for just $79 a year provides access to a huge collection of movies, TV shows and books, plus upgraded shipping. http://news.dice.com/2012/07/17/amaz...n-kindle-fire/ |
now ... if they would just make a 10" screen version

10-inch Kindle Fire tipped as Amazon new iPad challenge imminent Chris Davies, Jul 16th 2012 Amazon’s larger Kindle Fire is still in the pipeline, sources insist, scaling up from the existing 7-inch slate as Apple reportedly scales down to tweener tablet levels. A namedrop in the same NYT article that threw further weight against the iPad mini rumors, according to unnamed developers the retailer is pushing ahead with what’s tipped to be a roughly 10-inch variant of the Kindle Fire, bringing the challenge to Apple’s new iPad. While Amazon spokespeople unsurprisingly declined to comment on the newspaper’s chatter, the idea of a new, larger Kindle Fire isn’t exactly new. Even before the original Kindle Fire was revealed, speculation had it that Amazon was working on not one but two devices: a cheap, small model (which went on to hit virtual shelves at $199) and a larger, more capable version. That second model never arrived, however, with talk that Amazon encountered issues with components and performance, among other things. However, going by the insider whispers, that work might be culminating again in a larger device due later in 2012. Exact hardware details are in short supply, but Android is undoubtedly running – albeit heavily reskinned for Amazon’s content-selling purposes – under the hood, and a screen sized more akin to the 9.7-inch current iPad is likely. Any launch is most likely to take place alongside the second-generation 7-inch Kindle Fire, which as rumor would have it is due in Q3 with a 1280 x 800 display. Amazon is also tipped to be working on a Kindle smartphone. http://www.slashgear.com/10-inch-kin...nent-16238656/ |

just make a 10" kindle fire and keep it inexpensive not going to play Call of Duty on it or edit video. for me it's just a mobile convenience item ... 1. large screen 10+ inch 2. long battery so i don't have to worry about recharging all the time 3. full browsing (ie flash &big enough screen) i hate not be able to visit a site or see something 4. ebook (another reason for big screen, less page turning) 5. few flash games for boredom (angry birds or silly crap like that) 6. some picture taking/showing 7. quick and simple access to email/text/twitter i think the current kindle fire does all these things, except the 10" screen. |

I think most people don't use half of the features in an Ipad and just want a basic device. |

The Kindle's popularity and sales are directly related to the point in time when it became a full functioning tablet, instead of just an e-reader. That's what people want, and that's the direction they'll take it. |
I have a Fire. I love it for reading and despise it for pretty much everything else. The Android system it's on is wonky and the battery life sucks. The size is great, and consuming Amazon content on it is good too.
Having to restart it to watch Netflix, or the level of something like burn in on the screen when I switch screens isn't. Android sucks. Whenever I open the web it restores a tab to a site I closed out of 3 months ago. Always. Then my company switched from the Inspire4G to the iPhone. Now all I do on the kindle is read, my iPhone is better for everything else. Including watching movies on the way smaller screen. I would get an iPad over the Fire for everything I'd do on it except read. For that, the size and backlit screen (while in bed) make the Fire perfect for me. |

Know how I know not to listen to anything you ever say about this subject? |
I have the Fire and hacked it on the 3rd day. I'm currently running Ice Cream Sandwich and I can't image needing another tablet for a long time.
It does everything I need. |

And while the Kindle Fire has sold better than previous models, it still hasn't been as successful as Amazon hoped. To address that, they're increasing the next gen Kindle's capabilities, in hopes of making it more of an iPad competitor. They're not going to simplify it to keep it cheap, they're going the opposite direction. iPad has shown that price isn't the determining factor in choosing a tablet for the overwhelming majority. |

And you can run XBMC on Android tablets now too. Which makes them infinitely better as a media consumption device. It's still in development, but should be final soon, and will run without rooting. That jumps Android tablets up to iPad capable level by itself. At least least for what I use a tablet for.. XBMC for Android |

I do like how you can find a comma on the iPhone keyboard, but my fire keyboard doesn't have one. That's a terrible bias. And despite that I love my fire... |

Another warning if you're considering the Fire is that they do lock down the apps you can run on it. You can only use apps from the Amazon Appstore, and they keep a lot of good ones off of there. My wife has a bunch of apps that I've had to sideload because Amazon doesn't want them on there (like Dropbox, Spotify, Google Music, Google Reader, and Instagram). Basically, if you're wanting an "Android tablet," buy the Nexus 7. If you're wanting a media consumption device that can also run most (but not all) Android apps, the Fire will do the trick. |

Although ASUS assured me that it was a rare problem, be gentle with the plug into the power port. I broke mine off plugging it in at a weird angle once, which is what caused the whole mess with their warranty. |

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1591869 I only ran the stock interface for 3 days before I jumped to CM7. Both CM7 and CM9 have run extremely well. I've noticed that my battery life took a bit of a hit when I moved to CM9 but it's not enough to send back to CM7. |

(Mashable) -- Demand for Google's 7-inch Nexus 7 tablet seems to have well exceeded the tech giant's expectations. Last week, Google posted a message to its online store saying that shipments of the 16GB model were delayed one to two weeks. Now, the store has stopped taking orders altogether. Those who want to purchase the $249 version of the tablet are told to sign up to be notified by e-mail when it is back in stock. The 16GB version is also sold out at GameStop, Kmart, Sam's Club, Office Depot, Staples, B&H, Best Buy in Canada and, according to The Guardian, Tesco in the UK. The only place to get the device online at this point may be eBay. Google is still accepting orders for the 8GB version however, which costs $199. The 7-inch, Asus-built tablet, which began shipping earlier this month, is the first to run the latest version of Android, codename Jelly Bean. It has a 1280×800 HD display (216 ppi) and a quad-core processor. It has received widely positive reviews from the press — our own Peter Pachal called it "the Android media tablet the Kindle Fire was supposed to be." http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/23/tech/g...html?hpt=hp_t3 |
Not too surprising, really. It's been reviewed incredibly well, and I think there are still quite a few people sitting on the sidelines and waiting for a high-quality tablet option in the $200-$300 range.

I'm interested to see what direction Amazon goes with their OS. Will they build the same skin off of an ICS base, or completely redesign it? Amazon depends a lot on what Google does, which has to be worrying for them.

Okay:
The boy got a kindle fire HD for Christmas. He loves the device. The ****ING 1-touch shopping is KILLING me, though. This bullshit of not being able to at least password protect purchases (like the apple app store) is ridiculous. I'm going to have to start making him use a different account or delink the amazon account from the fire. He isn't intentionally buying stuff, but he just starts screwing around on it looking at books and then hits purchase on accident. He's bought like 30 bucks worth of books in the last week. |
Have you tried this Go here

You can also disable In-app Purchasing in the Settings, under "Apps". That prevents you from buying coins and whatnot while playing games. |
Not happy with this device. We've had it less than a year, and it's seen very light use. I have it in a lifeproof case. It's stuck in safe mode (evidently it has something to do with the volume controls being stuck, which they are), and it won't come out. Looking it up, this is a very common problem, but the listed fix isn't fixing mine.
In contrast, we've had 2 iPads for 3 years that have both seen extremely heavy use, and I've never had a single problem with either of them. |

Sucks you got a lemon. I'm still trying to convince my boss that I need an iPad since all of our dealers and field guys use them. He did mention that a Surface might be in the cards. |
