Clash of the Sitcoms: Round 1, Heat 17.
Here's an eclectic group.

I'm surprised so many new shows are heavy vote getters.

Kinda makes you wonder about the forum's demographics. |
My thoughts:
#1 - Soap - One of the best shows ever. Bert's kidnapping by the aliens, Chester's prison escape, Chuck and Bob, I could go on and on. #2 - The Partridge Family - Reasonably funny show, and occasionally they would pop out a classic line. I liked it, so sue me. #3 - What's Happening? - Okay, it's not a classic, but I'll throw it a bone. It was pretty well-produced and well cast, and I could identify with the skinny geeky guy who was the lead character. Didn't make the cut. #4 - How I Met Your Mother - I saw it a few times and thought the Barney fellow was pretty funny, but the wimpy guy really bugged me. He could be the half-man on Two and a Half Men. So-so show. #5 - Red Dwarf - I've never seen the show and can't vote for it, but I really suspect that I'd like it a lot. Anything with a mutant cat-human has to be funny. |
SOAP is the only option in this one. Should make at least the Elite Eight.

You're far too kind. |

This show was so far ahead of it's time and ground breaking. The most amazing thing is to look at the cast list over the history of the series and this show may have launched more careers than any other I know I watched every single episode and my friends at the time couldn't understand why.... |
SOAP.
It was Arrested Development before magic was vodka butterflies... |

It is too bad Red Dwarf won't get much play. English space humor that used to show late, late at night after local wrestling was over on Saturday nights. Yeah, not much viewership.
That said, SOAP is the best in this bunch although HIMYM is one of my favorites currently showing. |
I didn't vote for any of these.

I only watched What's Happening and The Partridge Family out of these, both of which are "meh, ok but not great, not terrible".
Based solely on how my friends rave about it, I will vote for Red Dwarf which I am 100% certain I would have loved if I could've figured out how to find the time to watch it. I'll throw SOAP a bone (probably not needed) based on reputation alone. But I won't vote for either next round. |
SOAP was amazing. Billy Crystal! Benson!
Burt!....great analogy above (comparing to arrested development) |

Have you ever seen it? It's an easy show to write off because it was filmed in that bad '80s video format, and Susan Harris shows always tend to have a cheap-looking quality to them, but it was fantastic in a completely bizarre sort of way. It was full of outlandish characters and plots, and very well written. In its first run I wouldn't watch it because I thought it would be terrible, and then I discovered it in reruns and devoured it. |

Just not sure it's one of the very best sitcoms of all-time. 75 best? To be sure. 50 best? Probably. 25 best? Eh... 10 best? No way. It had such a short run. |
You ****ers are missing out on a fantastic per... er... show

It was a pioneer in certain ways. Addressed issues that weren't often being tackled in that format...at that time. |
DANGIT WHERE IS HEAT 18? HURRY UP!

I voted enthusiastically for Soap and How I Met Your Mother. I voted on the basis of nostalgia for The Partridge Family.
What's Happening had the memorable Rerun character and the somewhat less memorable leading character Raj, but other than that I don't remember much about it. Never saw Red Dwarf. |

Soap, How I Met Your Mother, and What's Happening are moving on. And that, kids, is how I met your mother.
