Google+

Has anybody tried it, and do you have any invites?

DaFace 06-29-2011 09:38 PM

I signed up to try and get one, but nothing so far. It sounds intriguing at least. At least far more so than Buzz.

The Rick 06-29-2011 11:45 PM

If anyone has any invites they'd be willing to share...please send one my way! Thanks in advance!

Impression from their own marketing material - Seems to me like it muddies the waters by identifying you by your "Google Account" which you may or may not already have or care about. Or maybe you have several. Rather than just approaching it as an independent site asking for whatever e-mail you care to provide and granting you a brand new account. Could be wrong. Also doubt the whole "circles" thing. People are narcissists, they want to talk to the whole group and be able to excuse it as just being part of the program. Let them select certain groups and it suddenly becomes e-mail distribution lists.

DMAC 06-30-2011 07:37 AM

I loathe facebook for the very reason that I now avoid cameras. Every time my picture is taken, I know the whole world will see me and what I was doing then.

I like the idea of the circles. You can create a circle of "the float trip we just went on" or "chiefs game" or just "close friends", that doesnt include your parents, for instance, or your pastor or something.

Just sounds a little more personal. It's on the right track.

You dont have to let the whole world see your pics or what you are doing on FB, but they dont exactly make it easy for users to control their security settings.

No. You can create groups of your "friends" in the same way circles works and disallow viewing of certain aspects of your information (photos, wall posts, tags, etc) for certain groups. It's not very intuitive in the way it works, but it does work. Once you create groups, then when you add a friend it gives you the option to add that fried to a group.

luv 06-30-2011 08:16 AM

A friend of mine posted the following on his facebook:

okay so I never got an invite for Google+ but I just went to google.com/+ and was able to join. hooray.

|Zach| 06-30-2011 08:17 AM

From a privacy stand point with stuff like DMAC is talking about I don't think there is anything Google is doing that will make that less of a factor. But FB has decent tools to control stuff like that. Only publishing to certain groups of people avoiding being tagged...etc.

Well shit. Then NOBODY uses it. I like the way my google pics work. I take my pics and they are my pics on my site. If I want to share a pic or an album I just send the link to who I want.

I strongly disagree. I censor myself pretty heavily on facebook because there are things I'd be more than willing to say to my friends, but not to my parents.

Kind of. The problem with FB is that it's mostly an "all or nothing" security system. It's easy to make it so that certain people can't see ANY of your pics, but it's much harder to control whether people can see individual types of pics.

I get that, and I do the same. But even the things you are willing to say to your friends - isn't that a pretty broad range? If it's a really tight circle then I almost don't need social media. A quick e-mail with a few friends will do.

I'll give it a chance. I just think that trying to decide how to group and classify people will end up being another layer of complication. Could feel different after using, though. I'm rooting for it to be good.

They've been that way for a long time now. If Google wanted to take over the US, they pretty much could eventually.... Demographic information on levels the government can't likely compete...

David. 07-01-2011 12:52 AM

well...if someone has an extra invite around it would be muy apreciado.

If you want one, PM me your gmail address. That's how the invites work. I've played with it for 2 days now, and it's interesting... the circles are a great idea.

Thanks for stopping by.We’re still ironing out a few kinks in Google+, so it’s not quite ready for everyone to climb aboard. But, if you want, we’ll let you know the minute the doors are open for real. Cool? Cool.

That's just it... FB was one of the first social networking sites to get hammered with privacy issues, and they didn't have the second-mover advantage that Google has with Google+. FB did notify users when the advanced security features came out, but a lot of people probably ignored the messages, found it confusing, didn't know how it benefited them, etc; and I don't know if new users get a tutorial on it when they sign up.

All Google had to do was find a way to market it to the masses in a way that makes sense & fix FB's flaws... of course, FB will turn around and copy it, just like Google+ copied FB's UI and a lot of the security stuff.

teedubya 07-01-2011 12:02 PM

The inviting process is kind of wonky... I added you guys to the system... hopefully, that works.

teedubya 07-01-2011 03:07 PM

Same here. Never received anything.

morphius 07-04-2011 04:33 PM

Really, until it is open for general use, I'm in no hurry to get my account as there will be very fer people to talk with. Which sort of defeats the purpose.

I've had groups setup for FB for a long time, they keep finding ways to make it more worthless and difficult, but oh well.

ReynardMuldrake 07-07-2011 06:31 AM

Finally got a working invite. But yeah, there's pretty much nobody on it yet.

|Zach| 07-07-2011 06:33 AM

Shag 07-07-2011 10:26 AM

ReynardMuldrake 07-07-2011 10:45 AM

You guys want to start a CP circle?

|Zach| 07-07-2011 10:48 AM

Circles are private by nature. Everyone has them and you know when someone has you on one but they don't know which one.

I thought they could be used as a collaboration tool? Kind of useless if the communication is one-way.

G+ really isn't good for collaboration at all.

It is really useful as a social network that lets you manage who your bits of information go out too much better then Facebook.

But I'm not a huge social media guy. Really don't use it for anything (no chat, no pic uploading, no events, etc).

KevB 07-07-2011 07:44 PM

So what does an invite e-mail look like? I got something from someone that appears to be an invite e-mail, but the "button" simply says "Learn more about Google+" and takes me to the standard page that says Keep Me Posted.

Not sure it's worth all of this trouble.
