Glen Coffee Retires

http://nfl-facts-and-rumors.blogs.cb...=headlines;nfl Just 23 years old:eek:

OnTheWarpath15 08-13-2010 02:01 PM

Yeah, I posted this over in Casino/FantasyPlanet.

Weird.

Guy is a RB2 behind a guy known for being injury prone.

He could have easily gotten a shot to start this year.

El Jefe 08-13-2010 02:31 PM

Not his best financial decision.

He probably earned more last year than I will in my lifetime. Not too bad a move IMO. Got a nice monetary stash and got out before his body breaks down.

vailpass 08-13-2010 03:29 PM

23 years old. Wonder what the back-story is here?

CaliforniaChief 08-13-2010 03:30 PM

He could have at least waited until the middle of the game and done it Steven Slater style. You know, in the backfield before the play...just take the uniform off right there, take a beer out of your jockstrap, yell "I quit" and walk away.

Mr. Laz 08-13-2010 03:52 PM

wow ... guy has talent too, i really thought he has something.

wonder WTF happened

Iowanian 08-13-2010 03:53 PM

sonnabitch.

Deberg_1990 08-13-2010 03:53 PM

He family probaby has money, he has a decent degree or a decent job offer lined up...has to be a back story here...who knows?

Update (3:12): Coffee issued the following statement about his retirement: "This has been a tough decision for me, but at this time in my life I feel it's best for me that I move on from football. I appreciate what the 49ers, my teammates and coaches have done for me, and I wish them a blessed season and all the best in the future. "

Update (4:13): Some quotes from Mike Singletary, who said that he appreciated Coffee telling him the news face-to-face.

“His demeanor was, ‘I really hate to lay this on you, coach. But since college, my heart just hasn’t been in it. As a matter of fact, I came out early because my heart wasn’t in it,’ Singletary said. "All I asked him was, ‘Are you sure? Have you really thought about this?’ He said, ‘Yes, I have. I thought about it for a long time."

Singletary also said he was "sad" that Coffee quit because Coffee is an "exceptional young man."

That makes more sense; gotta' respect the kid for not stealing money.

Still, I have to wonder if he will wish he had stuck it out for a couple more years when it sinks in that he passed on million dollar pay days to play a game.

Iowanian 08-13-2010 04:02 PM

It's too bad in situations like these you can't transplant his physical tools to some little engine that could with the heart and desire.

Demonpenz 08-13-2010 04:10 PM

it takes some heart and desire to do right to walk away. especially talking to a legend like mike

Goldmember 08-13-2010 04:11 PM

Nah, he just wants to play for the Cowboys like Sicko

Reaper16 08-13-2010 04:12 PM

Talk here in Tuscaloosa (Coffee played for Alabama) is that he plans on going into the ministry. His passion for God overcame his passion for football.

Tebow: your move.

Demonpenz 08-13-2010 04:13 PM

noo we need tebow to play, it's our only hope to get to the top!

Sure-Oz 08-13-2010 04:18 PM

Saw a tweet from a boston guy mentioned he wouldn't be suprised about him joining a ministry due to a higher calling.

usually explains this stuff

For his sake I hope that isn't it. He'll wake up one day soon in tears, wondering what the hell he did and if it's too late to get back with the team.

Okay maybe that's just what I would do.

Deberg_1990 08-13-2010 04:41 PM

If thats the case, personally i would have stuck it out for a few more years to build up a nice nestegg, then gone on to a higher calling.

Rain Man 08-13-2010 04:44 PM

This is going to happen more and more as Eric Berry gets established.

cabletech94 08-13-2010 05:26 PM

soooooo, then not gonna draft coffee in the 12th round this year, i guess.

Coffee retires. If he's married is this "grounds" for seperation?

Bump.

He pulled a Pat Tillman and joined the Army.

Glen Coffee's single year as a 49er may qualify as one of the strangest NFL careers. The summer after a promising 2009 rookie year, in which the third-round pick out of Alabama filled in nicely for an injured Frank Gore, Coffee up and quit. God didn't want him to play football, he said in brief and guarded interviews. There's more to life than the pursuit of money.

Later today, Coffee will graduate from the army's Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga. He says he doesn't miss the NFL, and that serving in the military is a much better use of his gifts than playing professional football.

“I figured that if I'm able, the Lord's blessed me with an able body while I'm young, to get out there and get dirty.”
Coffee's sudden retirement during training camp in 2010 was as shocking to the 49ers as it was to fans, but he admitted his heart was never in it. He missed the South—he said he regretted leaving Alabama early, and immediately moved back to his home on the Florida Panhandle. But more than that, he just didn't seem to know what he wanted to do with his life, only that the NFL wasn't it. In a candid interview with the Sacramento Bee a year after his retirement, he decried the pro athlete mindset.

As far as the NFL goes, I have a hard time putting it like this because it sounds kind of harsh, but I feel like it ruins a lot of lives more than anything else. And that goes for people who have short careers in the NFL and long careers in the NFL. Because what happens is they see that as success. And money throughout your life has nothing to with your salvation in Christ. A lot of players get that money. And they chase that money, man, and I feel that they're really missing the true meaning of life. So I'm constantly afraid for the NFL and the players because kids growing up nowadays, they see that as the end all, be all. And that's just not the case.
Coffee drifted around for awhile. He started boxing. He got baptized, and spoke at churches. He was arrested for weapons possession. (Charges were later dropped.) He went back to Alabama to finish his degree. He played semi-pro football. But it was only after seeing Tears of the Sun, starring Bruce Willis as the leader of a squad of Navy SEALS, did he decide to join the military. He enlisted in February. After today's graduation, it's off to Fort Bragg, where Coffee hopes to become a Green Beret.

Hammock Parties 06-21-2013 09:04 PM

Not very bright.

Just pissed away a lot of money.

Hammock Parties 06-21-2013 09:04 PM

He just couldn't take it, after Alex Smith left.

patteeu 06-21-2013 09:54 PM

Good for him. I hope he finds the meaning he's looking for.

Yeah, I admire someone for walking away if their heart's not in it. It's too easy to take the big money, and it damages the sport to have great athletes playing just for money instead of a love of the game. It takes guts to walk away.

Thig Lyfe 06-22-2013 12:08 AM

Exactly. And maybe he wants to pursue masturbating awkwardly in the middle of a desert. We don't know.

Good for him.

Unretired and released by the Niners after his stint in the Army

I guess he's trying a comeback?

Or just doesn't have a choice because he needs the money and doesn't have any job skills.

Football and the military generally don't translate to job skills.

Exactly why he now feels like an idiot for walking away from millions to play a a game.

I thought that would be obvious.

I'm sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the facts that he's 30 years old and hasn't played a down in 7 years. Let Dorsey overturn every stone and see what he has left. But, given his AGE (notice I didn't mention race), the odds are very low.
