The best TV show of the last 10-12 years that OTW58 hasn't seen...
Just finished up a long holiday break, and spent a lot of it watching all three seasons of Deadwood. For whatever reason, I had never gotten around to watching it, even though I had heard nothing but great things about it.
I thought this was the last truly great show I had missed out on, but then I realized the Planet could probably steer me in the right direction. Looking for something new to me, and phenomenal. Here's a list of the great and above average shows I've already seen. Might give you an idea of the kind of things Mrs. OTW58 and I like. Prefer to stick to HBO, SHO, AMC, FX, etc. Not really bothering with network. The Sopranos Deadwood Breaking Bad Mad Men Boardwalk Empire Dexter Homeland House of Lies Rescue Me The Wire Band of Brothers The Pacific Generation Kill Sons of Anarchy Archer Entourage Weeds The Killing I'm sure I forgot something. Any recommendations? |

Justified and Terriers

The Big C and Episodes on Showtime are very good.

It's a great, great show. Timothy Olyphant plays Givens, and he's even better than he was in Deadwood (he was Seth Bullock). It's starting season 4 tonight, actually. |

Battlestar Galactica
Lost (I know you said no network, but I think this has a more non-network feel) |

Another reason to watch...Natalie Zea. |
Sherlock on netflix...the British one.

Justified new season tonight!
|
The Glades.. it is an A&E show.
|
The League, Eastbound and Down.
Oh..and Home Improvement. :) |

It's not available OnDemand via DTV, not available via Netflix streaming. Looks like only option is $17.99 for the 1st season on Amazon Instant (HD) which means I have to hook up the PS3 again. |
It's on DVD for $14 if you want to save a few bucks.

Only $2 more than streaming, it seems to get ridiculously good reviews. I'll probably pull the trigger and hope we like it. |
I would be really surprised if you didn't like it, judging by the list in your thread starter.
Season 1 was really good. And it gets even better in seasons 2 and 3. |
Without a doubt, Doctor Who (the reboot started in 2005).
All episodes are available on netflix, DO EETTT! |

wow.. no The Walking Dead? Great show, right in the vein of the shows you watch, but with zombies.
My favorite quote from season 1? "Hey, Dumbass. Yea, you in the tank." |
I've always heard great things about The Wire. Just started watching it OnDemand, and I like it. Through about half of the third season now. Good stuff. I don't know if it lives up to the "best show ever" hyperbole I've read, though.
And it is a little dated, dealing with 10-year old technology. |

The wire is a fantastic show. And I'm obviously a huge BSG fan. Watching it after the fact is great because you can watch it all at once and not have to wait a year for the next episode because the scifi channel is reeruned.
|
I feel like the 1990s - 2000s were the golden age of television. All of my favorite shows are from this time (I guess it helps that this range takes up all of my formative years).
I don't think anyone has mentioned The Shield yet. That show is definitely in my top 5. |
What's The Wire about? How many seasons?
|
Quote:
The best "police show" there is. I use the term "police show" loosely. |
The Wire is the greatest artistic endeavor ever undertaken by mankind.
And I'm probably way behind the times here, but I just watched all 7 seasons of The Shield over the Fall/Winter. Loved it. |
Terriers, Six Feet Under, Damages

Shameless (U.S. version)

Just watch it Pest. It's not referred to in every "Best Show Ever" conversation for no reason. |

This thread comes at the perfect time. On Sunday, Honey Boo Boo's Holiday specials began airing. Tune in on Sunday nights, TLC 8pm for fine television.

Downton Abbey is on Netflix instant.

It's a shame Providence isn't on DVD.

The Wire
Firefly |
I know you said no network, but you really need to watch Friday Night Lights.
|
Game of Thrones.
Might try Longmire. Band of Brothers I'm a huge fan of Burn Notice and White Collar. |
The Bunny Ranch
|
Girls and Veep are pretty good.
Drop the anti-network bias and check out Parks & Rec, Community, 30 Rock, and early seasons of The Office if you haven't seen them. Original British version of The Office is great and very dark, and Extras is pretty good too. |
I like a more humorous show
Leverage-TNT Like Oceans 11 every week. Not intense. Has good humor. Royal Pains-USA Necessary Roughness-USA |
Ballykissangel from BBC.
|
Justified. HTF does someone miss that show?

Matter of fact, the only shows on my list that I actually started watching at the time of premiere were The Sopranos, Archer, House of Lies and Boardwalk Empire. The rest were all started a season or two into their airing. Or in the case of Deadwood, 8 years after the fact. |
I've always enjoyed Californication. Duchovny is brilliant in that show. This last season started out rather slow but finished strong.
|
Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead should both be added to your list.
Edit: Also The League |
From the makers of Archer, Frisky Dingo. Its an odd type of humor but if you liked Archer you will love it. I still don't know why anyone hasn't made a keyboard ant farm yet...
Someone said Damages Also, network, but How I Met Your Mother is great. |
Quote:
It was entertaining for the first few seasons but it's been a complete cluster**** since 2010, if not 2009. The writers continue to drag out the story line, there's very little humor left and the characters have grown very stale. Laugh tracks suck. |
I would say Justified, Terriers, Battlestar Galactica and Six Feet Under. Also, if you enjoyed the dialogue of Deadwood, you might like Luck. Like Terriers, it only lasted one season, and I don't think there was much of a following for Luck, but I love the worlds Milch creates and was sad to see it go.

I highly recommend Rome. It probably fell right between the Sopranos and The Wire for me. This might be a biased opinion due to my love of history, but I'm positive the show is excellent on its own merits.

Another +1 for The Shield Here- I liked it better than the wire -but they're different
Also +1 for the League So funny I will have to check out Justified and Deadwood as well Also The Wire is on HBO GO if you have access to that for those interested |
Go out and purchase Game of Thrones immediately.
Californication and The Shield are also worth your time. |
West Wing.
|
Oh, Wow! Add Arrested Development and Freaks and Geeks to your list as well, they are both among the best comedies of all time, imo.
(If you really have time, I would also recommend starting from Season 2 of Parks and Rec and The Office) |
I've never seen a single episode of any of the shows in the OP other than Archer. I liked Archer, so I vote for it.
|
Rome, Spartacus, House, Sherlock

Outside of the TNT shows I have never liked non-network shows. I've tried to watch several of them and they just never entertain me.

Family Guy, Scrubs |
Spartacus ain't bad either.

Add this immediately. Spartacus is good, and I enjoyed it a lot, but it is definitely over the top with the violence/sex. If you're going to be offended, that isn't a good call. But if you're fine with that, it is excellent. Particularly the first season. |

Oh, a few others i noticed were not on thread openers list:
The Shield, Nip/Tuck, Damages, Lost, Arrested Development, Parks and Rec |

I came in to the show when they were replaying it along with Gods of the Arena so I was really confused on the timelines and everything between the episodes with and without Spartacus. |
