Did Vermeil trick us?

Quote:

Former Eagles, Rams, and Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil reportedly had a role in bringing former Eagles coach Andy Reid to Kansas City. Now, Vermeil is trying to help replace Reid in Philly with another former NFL head coach.

“My choice would be Jon Gruden,” Vermeil told Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow of WIP radio, via Philly.com. “I just think he’s a helluva of football coach, and I don’t want him to make the mistake I made, to wait too long to go back. I just think he’s a helluva football coach and a great personality.”

Vermeil suggested action much stronger than the Eagles making a request that Gruden interview for the job.

“I’d do more than ask,” Vermeil said. “You know what I’d do? I’d get in a bus and take the bank with me.”

Vermeil is the second former Eagles employee to aggressively lobby for Gruden. Previously, former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski said that Gruden would be interested in the job, but that the Eagles had not yet contacted Gruden.

It’s unclear whether Gruden is playing any behind-the-scenes role in these public efforts to place him in Philly. But it’s believed that he’s ready to listen to NFL opportunities. And it’s apparent that, for now, no NFL opportunities are coming.

Whether he did or not, if we're taking a retread, we're likely better off with the one who's been coaching as opposed to the one calling games and doing studio shows.

RunKC 01-09-2013 04:17 PM

Look at Chucky's drafts in Tampa and then you'll see why Reid was the better choice.

I listen to Gargano and Macnow every night on the way home from work. Gruden is the fans choice in Philly but sounds like the Eagles aren't as interested as the fan base.

CADILLAC WILLIAMS OVER _______________ INSERT ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS PASSED ON

argument over lol

mikeyis4dcats. 01-09-2013 04:22 PM

Chucky would never have come to KC.

Buehler445 01-09-2013 04:23 PM

I want no part of ANYBODY that has been out of the league for 5+ years.

BigCatDaddy 01-09-2013 04:23 PM

He did do a good job with Rich and Raiders, but the flaming out in TB soured me on him. That and his Tebow man love should disqualify him for any future head coaching positions.

silver5liter 01-09-2013 04:28 PM

I dont want him to take a job this year so we can see Gruden QB camps

Cadillac was a great runner fresh out the gate. They just gave his ass, like, 800 carries in his first 8 games..

That was Bruce Allen, not Gruden.

Why do people insist that the head coach is choosing the players?

Kinda what I was thinking, but I think he does such a great job on TV, he should just stay there. I know it is hard for these football guys to stay away, but he really is perfect for TV.

I hate him on the TV honestly. I understand football is gaining popularity....but why does he have to describe everything as if he is teaching a four year about the sport?

I like that he says a lot of the things we as fans are thinking, but then more often than not he goes off on some tangent and gets on my nerves.

Vermeil had been away for like 15 years before he came back. There is no magic formula for a successful coach. A good coach is always a good coach.

So he gets no credit for getting the Raiders back on the map? He's the only one who has done shit there in many years.

Pasta Little Brioni 01-09-2013 05:21 PM

"I like this Matt Cassel." "Let's bring him to Philly"

All you have to do is fly a few banners over Eagles HQ telling them what you want them to do. Easy peasy.

Mr. Laz 01-09-2013 05:45 PM

I think Vermeil wants Philly and KC to both succeed.

Reid had to leave Philly, so why not KC?

Philly needs someone so he thinks Gruden can do it

I think Reid is a fine choice for us ... short term. I also believe that in 5 years we need to be ready to find our 'Jim Harbaugh'.

Hammock Parties 01-09-2013 05:46 PM

Jon Gruden talks a lot of bullshit.

Probably wouldn't have gone over well here.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Doubt a man that cries at half his pressers would wish ill on either team.

Easy 6 01-09-2013 06:04 PM

For all of the hype around him, gruden is the KING of boring offense.

Someone else can have him, i'll take Reid eight days a week.

BlackHelicopters 01-09-2013 06:14 PM

If Gruden were to return to coaching, he will have to un-scissor from Tirico first.

I dislike Jon Gruden even more than Andy Reid, so not a single **** is given.

:) Excellent

Rain Man 01-09-2013 09:04 PM

Vermeil talks up everybody.

"Cassel has great arm strength. Watch the zip he put on that swing pass to McCluster."

"Herm Edwards really runs an offense well. He produces more field goals than anybody in the league."

"That Brian Daboll is a little fireplug. He has a low center of gravity and it's hard to get leverage on him."

hometeam 01-09-2013 09:06 PM

So Dick Vermeil is the puppetmaster pulling at the strings of teams and coaches? They act like hes the owner or GM of these teams let alone have any say in what these teams or coaches do. Non-story.

Yeah it's gotta hurt when DV actually talks shit to somebody. Kind of like you or FAX calling somebody out. That would hurt.

'Hamas' Jenkins 01-09-2013 09:30 PM

Even if he did, Gruden is about the last guy I'd ever want developing a QB. He was the pro version of Spurrier when it came to a QB shuffle, and he couldn't identify talent at all.
