Mike Devito says "We Are Building A Bully...We're The Team You Don't Want To Play"

Mike Devito talks Chiefs Defensive Line, the defense as a whole, how competing with DJ helped him come back from injury etc...pretty cool stuff. He says he has played on a lot of very talented defenses and he has never been around a defense that was this complete or had this much talent before.

Says they have the depth to rotate guys on D-Line because they have 5 high quality defensive linemen. I'll post the shorter 2 minute youtube video here of Devito talking D Line....and the full 17 minute interview link from the KC Chiefs website below that. He says he is recovered 100% and is looking forward to getting back out on the field in 2015 and seeing how good the defense will be. Sounds encouraging. Really good interview.

That defense needs to be ALL THAT BEGINNING WEEK 1 Cuz the Texans D, especially their front 7, is gonna bring it. We need to do the same to Hoyer / Mallet & Co. That game is a MUST win when you look at the first quarter of the Schedule. Remember week 1 last year??? It mattered and it cost us big time.

It really is a big game, week 1.

We'll need to see marked improvement in that aspect before I buy this shit.

This may be the most athletic D-Line in the league. It averages over 310 lbs (at least the 5 players mentioned here by Devito) and is SUPER athletic....in fact all 5 of these guys run a sub 5 second 40 yard dash (show me ANY NFL D-Line who can say that...I don't think any can). All 5 have run under a 4.9 actually (not sure what his official time was but 346 lbs Dontari Poe ran a 4.8 something on the 40 yd dash combine video. Cat and Bailey the fastest ran in the 4.7's (at his pro day in 35 degree temps Cat ran a 4.7 and steadily ran in the low 4.6's at Parisi's in NJ indoors leading up to the draft), Howard a 4.82.....and this one shocked me, Mike Devito even ran a 4.87

That is FREAKISH speed for guys that size. They are all strong & athletic too. Physically freakish D Line for sure. Lets see what happens...Hopefully its translates on the field.

I think missing our all pro MLB in DJ and losing Berry mid season had a lot to do with that....also Devito is very underrated in the run game. But I agree, that has to improve.

I dont have a problem with claiming it. Missing a run dominant DE and both starting ILB's was a huge blow.

and losing all pro safety early in season too. I think this defense can be special. They were "lights out" the first 9 games of the 2013 season until both our outside rushers went down in same game and in 2014 losing booth ILB's, starting DE and our defensive leader in Berry def hurt. Going into 2015 not only is everybody healthy but I feel we have more depth. We have 3 OLB's who can rush passer, and more depth on DL as well as DB. Injuries are part of the game but I think it really effected this D hard the last 2 years. I can see this defense being elite in 2015. I hope so anyway.

I agree in a sense...but also am encouraged by his confidence, especially coming off a severe injury. Devito isn't a shit talker and is a veteran in this league, so it tells me that he fully believes what he is saying. He wouldn't say it otherwise. Better to walk it than to talk it but I'd rather have the defense chirping than the offense. If the offense starts talking we may be in trouble.

I do.

Even in 2013 when we were relatively healthy they were ranked 22nd in rushing yards allowed and 25th in YPC allowed.

I know we run a lot of nickel but making this claim is just absurd at this point. Our defense was fantastic last season but not particularly physical. We haven't fielded a defense that most would consider a bully in this millennium.

My prediction is the team has over 50 sacks....Houston will become the first player in NFL history to have back to back 20 sack seasons (I think he has the talent...and the talent alongside him...to do this). 190 um, no....but I say Cat has at least 10 sacks rushing inside from a 3 technique. Give that kid 25 snaps a game and he will def have a double digit sack season. With Houston, Hali and Poe rushing along side him, Cat will be left 1 on 1 rushing against an OG. Thats a mismatch...it will result not only in sacks but disruptions to the opposing offenses. Cant double team everybody. Those 4 rushing will be deadly. Plus Dee Ford, Howard, DJ etc....I think everything is in place for a 50 sack season. 200 no....50 yes. :thumb:

Stop what? It is what it is. With Houston, Hali, Poe and Catapano you will have 4 really good pass rushers. Poe may be 345 lbs but he can rush the passer...Howard has some pass rush ability too. Who you gonna double team out of Houston, Hali, Poe or Cat? CERTAINLY not Catapano! And if you do, then Poe gonna have a BIG year. The best pass rushing teams have multiple guys who can rush and compliment each other. This team has that. Houston is in a GREAT position to do something that has never been done before. Watt had two 20 sack seasons but never back to back....I think Houston has a good shot at this....ESPECIALLY with his contract up in the air.

Catapano will be dead last in our defensive line rotation. To date, the guy hasn't even shown that he belongs on an NFL roster and you're saying he'll get 10+ sacks this season, as a 3-4 DE no less. How many 3-4 DEs in the past 15 years have eclipsed the 10 sack mark? That is exceptionally hard to do from that position.

Seriously. Stop it.

staylor26 06-24-2015 01:22 PM

Houston should get 12-20

Hali should get 6-8

Poe should get 4-6

Bailey should get 6-8

Ford could get 5-8

Catapano could get 3-5

Howard could get 4-6

This defense is going to rack up a shit ton of sacks

I know you are 100% correct...it is unlikely. But he has the skill set and will be given the opportunity, so I'm sticking by my guns on it. 10 sacks. And if it happens, it makes the defense much better.

gonefishin53 06-24-2015 02:07 PM

Their 10 yard splits are equally impressive. Poe 1.69 sec; Bailey 1.7 sec; DeVito 1.62 sec; Catapano 1.62 sec; Howard 1.68 sec. This group can really close on the football in a hurry. Too bad Sutton can't play four of them at the same time in a heavy front, big nickel package against 2 TE offenses. Really dominate the line of scrimmage.

My concern is that we don't really know if the secondary is good or not because it may not have really been tested. Did low scoring offense plus poor run defense allow teams to play conservative against the Chiefs? Or did teams play conservative because they actually feared the pass rush and secondary?

More than anything I hope a DJ can return to form. They need a guy that can fill those gaps and play smart. If that happens, then the D line can really shine imo.

He's not off base at all, with DJ and himself back that goes a long ways towards shoring up the run defense.

We can now...

Cover everyone

Defend the run

Rush the passer

The defense will be squared away this year.

I love how people rag against the Chiefs' schedule (even their brutal 2014 schedule), but then completely ignore when a team like Houston plays average football against a complete buttcrack of a schedule.

Houston won 9 games last year. Only 2 of those teams were over .500 and the Buffalo game in particular was won over EJ Manuel, not Orton.
