Playing the Matchup 2012
Just a running journal of my fantasy football teams this year.
This year, I'm in two money leagues. Rosters will be updated here as time and my interest allows. UPDATE (big money league): QB Matt Ryan, Falcons Andrew Luck, Colts RB LeSean McCoy, Eagles Matt Forte, Bears Mark Ingram, Saints David Wilson, Giants Rashad Jennings, Jaguars WR Greg Jennings, Packers A.J. Green, Bengals Dez Bryant, Cowboys Nate Washington, Titans Kendall Wright, Titans TE Jared Cook, Titans K John Kasay, Saints Def Houston Texans |
My drafts are over the next two weeks. So I've been practicing by participating in mock drafts online.
Just finished one up just now: QB Tony Romo Matt Ryan WR Julio Jones Greg Jennings Pierre Garcon Nate Washington Titus Young RB LeSean McCoy Ahmad Bradshaw Mark Ingram Kevin Smith LeGarrette Blount TE Jared Cook K Lawrence Tynes DEF Kansas City Chiefs It's almost certain that no team I draft in a money league will be as good as this team, but meh. Might as well mention it. A couple players from this draft will surely end up on my squads this year: 1. McCoy is at the top of my board. 2. The TE corps is really thin this year, so TEs are getting overdrafted. But Jared Cook is about the only TE worth a damn that's really dropping to his value. 3. Kevin Smith is getting WAY under drafted. He's the only RB the Lions halfway trust anymore. This will probably change as the season wears on and Best and Leshoure return from injury. But Smith is killer value late in the draft. 4. Unless I'm unsatisfied with my depth, I'm probably going to end up drafting Tebow in the very last round this year. You watch. |
Also, just for kicks, one of my leagues has great mixture this year.
2 women 2 latinos 4 black dudes 2 white guys Should be fun. |

Drafted in my big money league.
QB Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR Greg Jennings A.J. Green Dez Bryant Nate Washington Kendall Wright RB LeSean McCoy Matt Forte Mark Ingram David Wilson Rashad Jennings TE Jared Cook K John Kasay Def Houston Texans I think I have an absolutely lethal starting lineup, and my bench is loaded with high-upside players. My main concern, obviously, is depth. I feel like I took good gambles across the board on my bench, but I need at least most of my gambles to pay off. |

I can't tell you how much I love this starting lineup I've drafted.
I think Ryan is underrated this year, throwing to the best WR corps in the league with Tony G at TE. I think both my RBs are quality 1st in McCoy and Forte. Guaranteed touches with both of them. I think my starting WRs, all three of them, are classic WR1s. Jennings, Green, Bryant... I love the bottom of my roster too. Texans are the best fantasy defense in the league. Jared Cook is a high upside TE, super athletic Jimmy Graham type. And the Saints kicker is a kicker. So long as everybody stays healthy, I'm golden. If a few folks blow up on my bench, I should be solid. And I drafted Andrew Luck, who should be my keeper for 2013. |
The season is starting off with one of the most brutal matchups I'll have all year.
I think only two teams in this league can hang with me, and sure enough I'm starting off against one of them: Ryan @ KC < Vick @ CLE Jennings vs. SF = A. Johnson vs. MIA Green @ BAL = Maclin @ CLE Bryant @ NYG = Blackmon @ MIN McCoy @ CLE > McFadden vs. SD Forte vs. IND > Peterson vs. JAX Cook vs. NE < Gronkowski @ TEN Henery @ CLE > Bryant @ KC Houston D vs. MIA > Green Bay D vs. SF Barring an explosion by Vick, I like my chances more often then not in this matchup. I obviously realized my mistake of drafting John Kasay in the 15th round -- Kasay isn't even the starting kicker in New Orleans anymore. So I dropped Kasay and I'll just hop around on kickers until I find one midway through the season. Vick hasn't looked too good this preseason, so I think Matty Ice might be able to outplay him if he exposes Jalil Brown and a lack of Tamba Hali. Our WR corps are both very, very strong. I have the better players but they are playing the tougher defenses. My runners are stronger, by far. I'd take both my runners over either of his. Gronkowski, of course, is the wild card. But I think Houston is going to make Tannehill's first start miserable. This should be a good victory over a strong opponent. We'll see. |
I love this:
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1184 I know it's just Yahoo projections, but whatever. My worst WR is better than his best. My worst RB is better than his best. My defense is projected better, and my kicker will soon be projected better when I trade out Kasay for Hartley (waiver expires tomorrow). The only advantage he has is Vick and Gronkowski. Formidable fantasy villains, but I can't help but believe I have the upper hand here. |
Boom.
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1185 Again, I know it's just Yahoo projections, but boom. |

Would be nice to know how many teams in your league and any non-standard rules whenever I look at your fantasy team lineup.

Either way, he's been going way late in drafts. If your league has more than 5 bench slots, it's well worth it to draft a 2nd TE like Cook, even if you have Graham/Gronk. |
Cook had a couple of monster games at the end of the season. A better running game and better WR play should help him. I'm high on him as well.

I'm just saying this has the sound of deja vu. So many times players are hyped year and year based on physical talent, but they never really produce on the field. I think Cook is one of those guys. |
Even though you're basically talking to yourself in these threads they're always a pretty good read, Direckshun.

I should have named my FF team Stagnant Shit Eaters. |
Speaking of stagnant shit eaters, today is another fantasy draft in my other, non-big-money league.
This league is significantly less important to me. I'll include updates but I'm not going to be invested in it like I am the big money league. My strategy: The draft is top heavy in WRs, middle-heavy in QBs and RBs, and bottom-heavy in TEs and Ds. Try to get a franchise RB in the first round. Go heavy on WRs soon after. Pad the RB position and get a Tier 3 QB in the midrounds. Invest in high upside everything late in the draft. Take a TE and a D late, only when the value presents itself. No reaching. |
Welp, the draft came and went, and I officially hate this league.
Live draft, half the people were late. Two were half an hour late. One was a no show and we had to put them on an autodraft. Three people showed up with no big board whatsoever, and just named players off the top of their heads. About half the time in the last four rounds of the draft, we were telling drafters that the guy they wanted was drafted -- sometimes many, many rounds ago. Some of the picks were just freaking bizarre. This was not very fun, not as much fun as my big money league, and frankly it was a waste of two hours. To make matters worse, I drafted 10th out of 10. Which I've never done before, but I came away with a pretty decent team regardless. I think, based on my projections, it's only the third best team in the league. But we'll see how I fare. Frankly, I'm predicting no fewer than three teams in this league become ghost teams. A good collection of people. But just a shit league. QB Michael Vick, Eagles Matt Ryan, Falcons Tim Tebow, Jets RB Darren McFadden, Raiders Jamaal Charles, Chiefs Cedric Benson, Packers Mark Ingram, Saints WR Julio Jones, Falcons Victor Cruz, Giants Antonio Brown, Steelers Darius Heyward-Bey, Raiders Austin Collie, Colts TE Jared Cook, Titans K Jason Hanson, Lions Def New York Giants The running backs department is obviously where I'm a bit concerned, but I passed on stocking up on another RB in order to draft Tebow in the 14th. Anyway. Just getting this on the record. |
Back to the real show, the big money league.
1. MJD is back. Fan****ingtastic, I feel wonderful having Rashad Jennings on my bench now, considering he'll be getting approximately 0% of the workload by the time I'd need him for byes. I've scoured the scrap heap, and here's the best we've got this year (excluding Redskins and Patriots RBs, because Shanahan and Belichek are not to be trusted): Ryan Williams Pierre Thomas LeGarrett Blount Ronnie Brown Kendall Hunter Robert Turbin I think that Hunter might be the safe bet right now, considering that Frank Gore can never get through a season. Pierre Thomas is really the only other guy worth serious consideration here, if the Saints finally give up on Mark Ingram. At this point, I'm sticking with Jennings. But if there is an injury to a key back at any point, I'm all over the backup like a fly on shit. 2. Somebody just dropped Titus Young in order to pick up Josh Freeman? I don't understand this move, seeing how this owner is already stocked with Matt Stafford and Peyton Manning. Nonetheless, I consider Titus Young an upgrade over Kendall Wright in every way. They are similar players, but Young (a.) isn't a rookie, (b.) plays with a better QB, (c.) benefits from defenses keying on Calvin Johnson, who (d.) is about to suffer from the Madden Curse this year. I love Titus Young, and just put in a claim for him. |
Adrian Peterson is a game time decision.
Bodes poorly for my opponent, who pretty much has to start him. His only other RB is Willis McGahee, who is facing the Steelers. |

It is an interesting question...
Both are backups behind a guy who will get 90% of the work. Both are in shit offenses with shit quarterbacks. Williams starts behind a guy who is injury prone. Jennings doesn't, but he's behind a guy who is definitely an injury risk this season with the holdout. Research will need to be done. |
Quote:
I highly advise you ditch him and put in Williams, who's going to get carries regardless of Beanie. But go ahead and assume Beanie will be hurt, because he always is. |
Quote:
I have a hard time taking a league seriously when Ryan Williams goes undrafted. |
Quote:
David Wilson has been spectacular this preseason. He's running the ball in a wide open offense with an elite QB, and one of the league's best offensive lines. |
Not to intrude guys.
But, quick question. Who is a better play this week? Stewart v. TB, or DeAngelo v. TB? I know JSTEW is a little beat up at the moment. Also, with these guys -- would you consider having one as your #2RB and the other as a potential flex? Foster has locked up #1 RB all year. Other RBs include: Stewart, Williams, Helu, Taiwan Jones, Dwyer. Other potential flexes include: Garcon, DHB, Bennett, Cribbs. Right now I've got Foster/Stewart as RBs. And DWilliams as flex. Considering putting Garcon in at flex. |
I'd definitely go with DeAngelo.
I'd probably have Garcon as my flex, but JStew is pretty solid as well. |

Kinda weird he's still starting Peterson. He's got several days. Surely he'll change. The Steelers/Broncos game will feature tons of running, and Willis McGahee will get 90% of the carries. I'd start McGahee over Peterson this week in a heartbeat. |
2011, continued.
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1192 Of course. I was the third-highest scorer in the league this week, and I played the second-highest scorer. 2011, all over again. Play well, but face an opponent every week who's rocking it. Welp. The upside is that the players I selected look pretty good. I need to think longterm here, and just assume that 2011 isn't going to happen again.
I lost in the other league as well, as I put up 98 points but played the guy with the highest point total of the week. In this league, I played the guy with the 2nd highest point total. 2011, continued. |

Alright, made a couple moves to spruce up the bench.
Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR Greg Jennings A.J. Green Dez Bryant Nate Washington Alshon Jeffrey RB LeSean McCoy Matt Forte Mark Ingram David Wilson Ryan Williams TE Jared Cook K Garrett Hartley Def Houston Texans |
Had somebody who contacted me today about wanting one of my running backs. He suffered a loss to Fred Jackson.
Here's my roster, followed by his: http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1193 vs. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1194 At this point, I can't see a trade that makes sense. I'm not trading McCoy, so it'd have to be Forte. What positions do I need improved? Not QB, not WR, at this point just TE, and I'd rather have Cook than Gresham. RB depth is a big need, though. The only trade I'd consider is Matt Forte for DeMarco Murray and Fred Jackson. I can start Murray now while he's healthy, and start Jackson later when he returns. He probably wouldn't go for that. But it's worth at least thinking about for now. |
Greg Jennings has a groin problem and didn't practice today. If its a repeat of Andre Johnson's issues last year, you should be prepared to play without him for a while.
|
Hard times have befallen the Turds of Wisdom.
1. Greg Jennings is out for at least this week, if not longer. 2. Matt Forte has suffered a high ankle sprain, and will be out a full month. So, suck. My primary backup WR, Nate Washington, is also out. My 5th WR slot was originally Kendall Wright, who I dropped for Alshon Jeffery. Well, Jeffery is off the table now because he played on Thursday, and he sucks anyway. So I had to drop him for Kendall Wright again, who is going to get the start in Tennessee. It is looking really, really rough. My RB position is in dire straights. Mark Ingram gets the carries in New Orleans, but there aren't a lot of carries to get just yet. David Wilson and Ryan Williams are waiting for the starters in front of them to get injured. So I made a desperation move and picked up DeAngelo Williams, who at least gets a good number of carries, but was discarded to the scrap heap after a freakish game where Carolina refused to run the ball. QB Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR AJ Green Dez Bryant Kendall Wright Nate Washington (out) Greg Jennings (out) RB LeSean McCoy Mark Ingram DeAngelo Williams David Wilson Matt Forte (out) TE Jared Cook K Graham Hartley Def Houston Texans What was once the strongest team in the league.... is now in dire straights. |

Welp, that went about as expected.
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1197 0-2. 8th in the league. 4th in points. The fuller stats won't be out until tomorrow, but I'm likely to be the first- or second-most scored-on opponent.
I cut Kendall Wright, and brought in Donnie Avery, whom Andrew Luck looooves throwing the ball to. I need a guy who gets ****ing targets. QB Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR AJ Green Dez Bryant Donnie Avery Greg Jennings (out) Nate Washington (out) RB LeSean McCoy DeAngelo Williams Mark Ingram Andre Brown Matt Forte (out) TE Martellus Bennett K Graham Hartley Def Houston Texans Now the choice pops up, one I'll be stewing over all week: who do I start at the other RB position? Andre Brown @ CAR Mark Ingram vs. KC (Pierre Thomas is also an option on the scrap heap.) DeAngelo Williams vs. NYG The Giants and Chiefs defense alternate between allowing RBs career days, and shutting them down. And Ingram and Williams are both in timeshares so it's hard to figure who will get the carries and where (though Ingram is NO's goalline back). Andre Brown is running against a relatively soft Panther defensive line, and he'll get the carries since everybody hates David Wilson. Will be a situation to monitor all week. At this point, I favor Brown. |
I'm going with Brown.
I also dropped Donnie Avery and brought on Mike Williams (TB), but I'm starting Greg Jennings as he returns to a brutal matchup against the Seahawks. QB Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR Greg Jennings AJ Green Dez Bryant Mike Williams Nate Washington (out) RB LeSean McCoy Andre Brown DeAngelo Williams Mark Ingram Matt Forte (out) TE Martellus Bennett K Graham Hartley Def Houston Texans |
Hard to feel good about this matchup with Forte out.
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1198 Andre Brown will do as long as Ahmad Bradshaw is out -- but how frickin' long is that going to be? The Giants also terrify me because I still love David Wilson, who is no longer on my roster. My opponent has yet to pluck a TE to replace Hernandez. He does not have a backup TE. Those on the market: Brent Celek Jared Cook Owen Daniels Jacob Tamme Kyle Rudolph I think he almost has to go with Brent Celek. |
Ryan @ SD > Rivers vs. ATL
Green @ WAS > White @ SD Bryan vs. TB > S. Smith vs. NYG Jennings @ SEA < Bowe @ NO McCoy @ ARI = Foster @ DEN Brown @ CAR < Green-Ellis @ WAS Bennett @ CAR > Celek @ ARI Hartley vs. KC > Janikowski vs. PIT Houston D @ DEN < Pittsburgh D @ OAK Blah. I just hate this league so far this year. |
Well my opponent has yet to pluck a healthy TE. I assume he'll to do that tomorrow morning.
For the longterm health of my team, I continue to look for depth across the board. I have officially pulled Greg Jennings, and put in Mike Williams, who will surely give me absolutely nothing in return. Two things to keep my eyes trained on over the next couple of days:

The rebuild is showing signs of life.
http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1199 Big win today. My opponent lined up a shit team and I've managed to top 100 for the second time in three weeks.
Next week I have a pretty favorable matchup, but I need to make sure I'm playing the right combination of RBs. .500, onward! |
Landed Pierre Garcon. Golden acquisition -- he is a legit WR2 when he comes back. Dez Bryant will be fighting him for my third WR slot.
Did not acquire Pierre Thomas, however. Went with Tashard Choice. CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson are both injured. Bye bye Mark Ingram, you unproductive failure. QB Matt Ryan Andrew Luck WR Greg Jennings AJ Green Dez Bryant Nate Washington Pierre Garcon (out) RB LeSean McCoy Andre Brown Tashard Choice DeAngelo Williams Matt Forte (out) TE Martellus Bennett K Graham Hartley Def Houston Texans |
I've been subsisting without Greg Jennings and Matt Forte.
And yet I'm still 3rd in the league in points. That's a strong output, and if I get both Jennings and Forte back in the next couple of weeks (I anticipate getting Jennings back next week, and Forte back the week after), I should be operating at peak condition come the second half of the season. 1-2, 6th in the season, 3rd in points. Marathon, not a sprint. |
Assessing next week's opponent.
QB: Cam Newton @ ATL WR: Brandon Marshall @ DAL Torrey Smith vs. CLE Brandon Lloyd @ BUF RB: Trent Richardson @ BAL Mikel LeShoure vs. MIN Chris Johnson @ HOU Ben Tate vs. TEN Ryan Williams vs. MIA Jacquizz Rodgers @ CAR TE: Tony Gonzalez @ CAR K: Robbie Gould @ DAL DEF: Seattle vs. STL Very good team, but I'm hoping I can get a real leg up in the RB department. He has to start two, and other than Richardson (who has a brutal matchup against the Ravens), he's got a plethora of shit option. I'm guessing he starts LeShoure? Of course, that begs the question of who I'm going to start. RB LeSean McCoy vs. NYG Andre Brown @ PHI Tashard Choice vs. NE DeAngelo Williams @ ATL Matt Forte (questionable) @ DAL McCoy, of course, is playing. Brown gets the start if Bradshaw is still out. If Bradshaw comes back, I may still start Brown regardless, unless CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson are both out, in which case I'll start Choice. Williams is my desperation play if the matchup is right, and against the Falcons, it's not. Forte may play this week, but he's as good as dead to me for another week. |
Tough, tough game.
I need Dallas/Philly to be a shootout. I also need Matt Ryan to light up, but somehow not use Tony Gonzalez. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/pictu...pictureid=1203 Matt Ryan vs. CAR > Carolina @ ATL Jennings vs. NO = Marshall @ DAL Green @ JAX = T. Smith vs. CLE Bryant vs. CHI < Lloyd @ BUF McCoy vs. NYG > Richardson @ BAL A. Brown @ PHI = LeShoure vs. MIN Bennett @ PHI < Gonzalez vs. CAR Hartley @ GB > Gould @ DAL Houston D vs. TEN < Seattle D @ STL |
My draft, a far-too-early review:
1. RB LeSean McCoy, Eagles -- Underwhelming returns so far, still healthy & working. 2. WR Greg Jennings, Packers -- Sidelined by injury from Week 1. Still waiting. 3. RB Matt Forte, Bears -- Underwhelming and injured. Waiting for a couple more weeks. 4. WR AJ Green, Bengals -- Has played very well. 5. WR Dez Bryant, Cowboys -- Underwhelming, but still holding out hope. 6. QB Matt Ryan, Falcons -- Once again, an absolute dynamic talent. 7. RB Mark Ingram, Saints -- Total failure. Has since been replaced by Tashard Choice. 8. QB Andrew Luck, Colts -- Solid reserve against shit defenses. 9. WR Nate Washington, Titans -- Solid reserve performance. 10. RB David Wilson, Giants -- Total failure. Has since been replaced by Andre Brown. 11. Houston Defense -- Has not delivered much of anything. Still waiting. 12. TE Jared Cook, Titans -- Middling results, dumped for a better option in Martellus Bennett. 13. RB Rashad Jennings, Jaguars -- Benched immediately in MJD's return. Replaced by DeAngelo Williams. 14. WR Kendall Wright, Titans -- Gave me one decent week, has since been scrapped for Pierre Garcon. 15. K John Kasay, Saints -- Wasn't even the Saints' kicker, lol. Graham Hartley. |
Ugh.
Forte is still out, but Ahmad Bradshaw and Fred Jackson are both likely to return this week. |
My RB2 situation just got very complicated:
Andre Brown @ PHI Ahmad Bradshaw has returned, and will be starting. They are suggesting that Brown could get the early-down work and be the goal line back. Philly is a tough defense. Tashard Choice vs. NE Fred Jackson is probably back, but he's running in a brace that he hates. He's also coming back at a shockingly fast pace from an LCL. The Bills are probably going to want to bring him along slowly. Choice would be the feature back in that case. The Pats have a tough defense. DeAngelo Williams @ ATL Williams is in a timeshare with Mike Tolbert and a recovering Jonathan Stewart. He's not receiving the goal line work, so god knows what Ron Rivera is organizing here. The Falcons have a tough defense. Lance Ball vs. OAK (scrap heap) Willis McGahee is discussed as "questionable" after leaving a tough game with a rib bruise. If he plays, he swallows up all the work. If he doesn't, Ball and Moreno get the touches, and the coaches hate Moreno. Oakland has a soft defense. Pierre Thomas @ GB (scrap heap) Pierre Thomas is getting more of the carries than Mark Ingram, who just looks horrific. Thomas is active in the passing game as well. Green Bay's defense is poor. If Fred Jackson is a scratch --> Choice If Fred Jackson plays --> Brown If Fred Jackson plays AND Willis McGahee is a scratch --> Ball |
And now a new complication: Matt Forte is practicing, and says he will play on Monday night.
Arg. Willis McGahee is also probable. So Lance Ball is out of consideration. |
Took a swing at a trade for RB Chris Johnson.
Why not. His value is never going to be lower, and who the hell knows if he is going to figure stuff out eventually. Sent a trade offering the lowest player on my depth chart, DeAngelo Williams. The owner may be simply fed up with him and want to get rid of him. |
Fred Jackson getting a lot of positive buzz. Tashard Choice is looking like he's out.
Pierre Thomas was picked off the scrap heap today. So it's come down to Andre Brown and... dare I trust him, Matt Forte. There's an outside chance the Chris Johnson deal lands, in which case he'd become an option, too. But I'd probably just sit on him for a while. |
Right out of the ****ing gate, Torrey Smith lands a 50 yard TD.
 This is going to be a long week. |
Now Trent Richardson has scored.
                  Firs thalf isn't even over, and my opponent has put up over 25 points. |
Well, with Graham Hartley's miss, I trail my opponent by 6 points with Sunday night & Monday night's game left.
My remaining players: Dez Bryant, LeSean McCoy, Andre Brown, and Martellus Bennett. His remaining players: Brandon Marshall and Robbie Gould. This week's got to be mine. |
Well Bennett and Brown gave me jack shit. Not even two points between them.
But McCoy's master performance, though it came without a touchdown, does give me a 10 point lead heading into tomorrow. It is going to be really, really tight. Dez Bryant and my 10 point lead vs. Brandon Marshall and Robbie Gould. ARRRGGGGGGG |

This season has also been an injury whack-a-mole.
Greg Jennings is out for a few, but comes back when Matt Forte goes down. Matt Forte comes back when Jennings goes down. And on we go. To help beef up my RB backups, I picked up the least pathetic RB on the market, Jackie Battle, dropping Tashard Choice. Meanwhile, Aaron Hernandez and Michael Bush just hit the open market. Hernandez is a really enticing guy, but I refuse to bow to Martellus Bennett's shit performance this week. Bennett's been too valuable up to this point. Bush, meanwhile, would be very valuable as a handcuff to Matt Forte. I've put in a waiver wire claim for Bush (replacing Battle), and I'm going to wait out what I hear about Hernandez as the week wears on.
