Greatest Debut Album Ever

My vote has to go to Boston. The production, songs and performances are still amazing nearly 40 years later.

Three weeks until the draft. What say you, Chiefsplanet?

Are You Experienced. Boom! Hendrix.

Honorable mention:

Please Please Me
Licensed to Ill
The Cars
Gotta include Zep I. Hard not to put it at the top

Those are "my" greatest.

Oh, and Pet Shop Boys and Go-Go's.

Too many. Gah!

Brock 04-08-2015 11:35 PM

Foo Fighters
Nevermind (not technically a debut)
Dookie
Surfer Rosa

88TG88 04-08-2015 11:39 PM

illmatic

DaNewGuy 04-08-2015 11:41 PM

STP-Core, Pearl Jam-Ten, Edit- obviously not the greatest but some of my favorites, both were pretty damn successful though

Brock 04-08-2015 11:44 PM

The obvious one is Appetite.

frozenchief 04-08-2015 11:47 PM

Van Halen.

Oh man...hard to pick one and might add more later..but Texas Flood is high on my list...he helped rejuvinate the blues, IMO.

teedubya 04-09-2015 12:18 AM

Oasis - Definitely Maybe.

It opens with one of the ballsiest opening title ever. Rock n' Roll Star. It has Columbia, Live Forever, Cigarettes and Alcohol, Supersonic...

If you've never listened to the album, and hate Oasis because one of the brothers is a douche, Liam. You should try them, once you realize that the guitarist, Noel Gallagher, wrote all of the songs, you realize they aren't wankers. Just Liam. Noel is hilariously brilliant. Love this album.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61-8CEFlawL.jpg

I would say GNR's Appetite is a great debut, as well.

Lonewolf Ed 04-09-2015 12:18 AM

Black Sabbath's debut album from 1970, self titled, and Led Zeppelin I are a tie for me.

Kill Em All

Though I don't think it was fully appreciated at the time it was released.

EPodolak 04-09-2015 12:31 AM

Have gotten the most mileage with one of the debuts already mentioned, probably. Aerosmith's first album was underrated.

All Things Must Pass, for a solo debut.

Live Forever is orgasmic.

Saccopoo 04-09-2015 12:38 AM

I love debut albums. Most bands never reach the passion and immediacy that they achieve on that first release.

So many good ones.

Boston's self-titled one has to be up there. Changed a lot of how rock was perceived, produced, etc.

As much shit as I've given them this past week, my choice would be:

Van Halen's "Van Halen"

The first time you heard it, it was like a ****ing sledge hammer slamming against your head. You never heard a guitar sound like that. The swagger and sex and rock-n-roll was huge, massive and loud. Every song was an anthem.

And unlike most rock albums of their specific generations, Van Halen's self titled debut still sounds incredible.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i5txwFv-zYM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Honorable mention:

Patti Smith's "Horses"
- One of my favorite albums regardless. Horse/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer is one of the greatest songs ever. Gloria might be the best cover ever.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wssnxfjH-zw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Rage Against the Machine's "Rage Against the Machine"
- I still just go nuts every time I hear "Killing in the Name Of" and "Freedom." So much "**** you!" in a time of general apathy and "me first" attitudes.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bWXazVhlyxQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Doors' "The Doors"
- I don't need to explain this one.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5-0bqonqooo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Portishead's "Dummy"
- Trip hop, as a genre, was really only around for about five years or so, but in that short period some of the greatest albums of all time were produced, which includes Portishead's landmark "Dummy."

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/gEQNAZGoZrw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

the xx's "xx"
- To quote Barry in High Fidelity "A sly declaration of new classic status slipped into a bunch of safe ones...very pussy!" However, the moment I heard this album I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Checked the video...nothing made sense...a handful of pimply faced limey nerds putting out some of the most moving, introspective, minimalistic brilliance I've ever heard.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Pib8eYDSFEI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This changed everything for me. The amazing blend of reggae, punk rock, hip hop, dub, ska, an dancehall just blew my doors open after the very first listen. Brad's voice is almost heavenly, and so full of soul. The bass lines, the drums, and the guest musicians from the LBC could immediately take you to a sunny summer day in So Cal. I still listen to it without skipping any tracks, even after all these years, and all the copies of the cd I've gone through.

Killer album. I'll ad an obscure one. For live, raw, sonic destruction you can't beat King King by the Red Devils. They were one and done.

From modern rock...

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Radiohead - Pablo Honey
Weezer - Blue album
The Strokes - Is this it?

Apart from Radiohead, for each of these bands, their debut was their best.

siberian khatru 04-09-2015 05:35 AM

Pure homerism here, but King Crimson's "In the Court of the Crimson King" is on the list. Pete Townshend called it "an uncanny masterpiece."

ILChief 04-09-2015 05:42 AM

Guns N roses - Appetite for Destruction
Pearl Jam -Ten

Can't decide

Coochie liquor 04-09-2015 06:04 AM

Also I would put Blind Melon self titled cd near the top of my list, as well as Black Crowes Shake your Money Maker.

Them and Boston top my list. Also...

The Cars
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Led Zeppelin
The Beatles

John Prine-John Prine

Hello in There
Sam Stone
Paradise
Pretty Good
Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore

many amazing albums mentioned so far, I'll throw these out there (or second/third/fourth if they've been named already)

ratm: ratm (self titled). sacc called it, but it's still high on my playlist if I'm feeling angsty
sublime: 40 oz to freedom. fourth'd? fifth'd? it's amazing no matter how many times it's said
wu tang clan: 36 chambers. amazing from front to back
beastie boys: licensed to ill. simply the greatest of all-time. if memory serves, it had so many samples that it literally could not be made today (I may be thinking of paul's boutique though)
killers: hot fuss. great album

and one a bit before my time, when lou reed was lou reed...

velvet underground/nico: the banana album. stunning.

Saw them at starlight last Summer. They were still very good.

Agree with Boston.....saw them last summer in San Diego....Scholz is still amazing (lead singer was meh).

Not sure mentioned......but technically, MJ's "Off the Wall" was a solo debut, right?

And already mentioned - "License to Ill" was amazing.

and a personal, more obscure choice for myself.......Stabbing Westward's "Ungod" was outstanding.

I agree. That, coupled with the fact that the album was recorded on a 4 track machine in Tom Scholz's basement makes it all the better....That guy, for his time, was innovative as hell.

For me, influential debut albums:

The Ramones first album
Never Mind the Bollocks - Sex Pistols
My Aim Is True - Elvis Costello
REM-Gardening At Night
Gin Blossoms - New Miserable Experience
David Lindley - El Rayo X
Chris Whitley - Living With The Law

These are just ones that come immediately to mind.
