You are gonna be waiting a while. We can't win the division on Sunday

alnorth 09-27-2014 11:08 PM

... and Seattle wins.

So, the Oakland and Seattle games are still relevant because Seattle could force a Monday tiebreaker game, which would be pretty sweet for us.

I realize that, but the possibility is there if we win tomorrow (which I think we will) and Detroit loses, which wouldn't shock me. Price got shelled by Mini-soda not that long ago . . . .

tk13 09-27-2014 11:16 PM

Mariners are throwing Felix today too. Will be a lot of pressure on the A's.

The Angels kinda have incentive to let the M's win this one...especially if it becomes apparent during the game that the A's will lose (make your potential opponents play an extra game).

Archie F. Swin 09-28-2014 07:37 AM

Going into this game the 2014 Royals team has 67 less home runs than the 2003 club, 59 less home runs than the 1985 club and 115 home runs less than the 2014 Orioles.

**** me runnin'

CaliforniaChief 09-28-2014 10:35 AM

I'm leaving work early to watch this one.

We should have a decent idea by the time we start if it's good David or bad David up in Detroit. If it's good David as I expect, well let's pull the starters and get ready for Tuesday.

If Bad David appears, well holy shit.

Rany once said MLB is like a slow drip of agony whether your team is good (and you're living with every game) or horrible (and you can't avoid the daily losses)

milkman 09-28-2014 10:45 AM

Why do we not call this one wild card game what it really is?

It's a play in game.

Because it's not. It's the playoffs, no different than the Chiefs-Colts wild card game last season. If Seattle & Oakland have to go tomorrow, that will be a "play in game" and not the playoffs.

Because we don't think of it that way for the NFL.

It is absurd to have 4 games out of 68 teams for "round 1", but its fine for 2 out of 10 or 4 out of 12.

That's pretty much what I think of it... don't have a problem with two wild card teams, but it's dumb to play 162 games (or 163) and then have a one game playoff, especially since wild card teams used to get a full series and have made noise in the past.

It's not like the NCAA, where the play-in teams aren't going to win a championship and will rarely do much at all. You have one or two teams capable of making some noise in the playoffs and one is gone after one game, in a sport where the best teams only win 60% of their games.

I think the intent was to give the highest seeded division winner that the WC winner has to play some sort of an advantage. More rest, one less game, etc...,

MLB thought that the Wild cards were making too much noise. Wanted to reward the Division winners more.

Well, the intent was probably to have the fanbase of more cities continue to care about MLB late in the season, but as a side benefit, this is pretty good.

The top seed can carefully set up their rotation while the wild card had to use their best pitcher to get there and is probably nowhere near ideal for their rotation.

MLB playoffs include the possibility of a 1-game round. There is no holy commandment handed down from God saying MLB playoffs are series.
