Phrases that annoy you...

This will probably be a dud of a thread, but screw it.

What are some overused phrases that annoy you?

Here's a couple that irk me for no rational reason:

"Across the pond" - I hear a lot of Americans use this phrase when referring to people from England, or just England in general. "Yea, we're headed on a vacation across the pond." Everyone uses this phrase and I hate it. It may have been clever the first time someone said it....but not anymore.

"In the drink" - fisherman use this one. If they're on the boat, and they knock something over and it goes in the water, they'll say it went in the drink. "Damn, my phone fell out of my hand and went in the drink. I'll have to buy a new one."

"Wet our lines/kayaks" - I've heard people use "wet our lines" quite a bit and it never bothered me too much, until I worked on shift with a kayak enthusiast. Any time you asked him what he was doing next weekend, he always said "Oh, I'm gonna go get my kayak wet." Every freaking time. Just got tired of hearing the same phrase.

There's a few more, if I think of them, I'll post them.

TimBone 04-18-2014 09:06 PM

"Not too terribly long ago" - I have a buddy who says this when trying to recall something from recent past. "Hey man, you remember that phone call I got from the insurance company not too terribly long ago?" How is this phrase any different from "not too long ago?" Adding the word "terribly" to it does nothing.

The correct answer is, "it is what it is".

Dead giveaway that the person you are talking to is completely dense (or terrible in conversation).

"Back east" from people who aren't from east of 'here' or don't regularly go there.

"Well, there you go" ...the worst being back in the day when I had a Chiefs jacket, someone complimented it and I said something like 'if only the team made it worth wearing' and they responded "well, there you go" .....wuh? :spock:

And several other stupid phrases people say without realizing what they're saying, like "I could care less..."

That's mine, too. I hate it when people, when corrected, will claim some etymology of the phrase, saying that it was sarcasm or ironic, originally could care less. Nope, it doesn't make sense and no one, at least not the originators, said it in a sarcastic tone like "I could care less... not." Just admit that you heard it used that way and repeated it without thinking about it or are too stubborn to fix it.

I don't correct people, at least not in person, because it's more annoying to be corrected than it was for the mistake to be said, but also because the speaker is often already pissed off. What's the use? They don't fix it and at worst will argue it.
