A Perfect Circle - Eat the Elephant
This album is tremendous from beginning to end, in my opinion a masterpiece and I dont use that word loosely. I can count the number of albums I like every single song on with one hand and this is one of them. A lot more mellow than their other albums but that's part of the reason I like it so much...part of this is probably coming with age as I'm now pushing 40. The craziest part for me is I have never been a huge APC fan until this album...I always liked a handful of their songs but I never got into them much.
Maynard always provides thought provoking lyrics and this album is no different. I challenge anyone to listen to it from beginning to end a couple times and tell me you dont enjoy it. Dont give up after the first track. While I very much enjoy it, its probably the weakest of the album. Every track is good but here are some of my favorites. <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BIsH686xWl0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/S_y6n5pMA7U" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-aOyAvbj2Fg" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nShkRKrozrA" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe> <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_i_QItduPgs" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen="" width="560" height="315" frameborder="0"></iframe> |

I really like APC.
I think this album sucks. |

Seriously though, how many times did you listen to it? I understand hardcore APC fans not liking it at first but give it a chance and open your mind to it. It's definitely different than their previous work but still a great album. |
One of my favorite albums in awhile. Got to see them at Mizzou Arena in May, awesome show.
|
Awesome. I'm on the fringe, but I prefer them to Tool

As much as I love this album it doesn't come close to Tool's best for me. I do like it more than Undertow. |
I really like the album. It's not my favorite of theirs, but it has some solid gems. I like that it's different than their others - it shows growth and a willingness to try and branch out from the norm.
The way you talk about this album (MTG) is how I feel about Thirteenth Step. Just a driving, engaging pulse throughout the whole thing. Beautiful. That being said - no APC album comes close to Aenima, Lateralus, or 10,000 Days. I bet the new Tool album (whenever the **** that comes out) is going to be insane. Very different, but still insane. |
Listened to the whole album on youtube and that "Hourglass" song can **** right off. I get that musicians like the expand into different genres a bit after a while to try something new or whatever, but expanding into techno is the wrong move. It just sounds like pure shit. Isn't that type of shit basically his third band Puscifer? Keep that shit there Maynard so I dont have to instantly skip a song when it comes up in the cycle.
The rest of the album sounds good. Quite a bit different than the first 2 albums. I'll buy it at some point. |
My son loves APC. He's at that age where he's starting to get into music and APC is his first favorite band.
He has "Disillusioned" memorized. As far as this album, i have to be in the mood for it. |

Linkin Park tried it and never really recovered. Korn tried it and it was their least successful album. Chris Cornell tried it and while it ironically became his only solo album to debut in the top 10, it plummeted shortly after and got pretty negative reviews. The biggest bands/names in the world cant sell that shit. Just stay away from the techno! |
Check out Ashes Divide.

NIN made a definitive, lasting impression from that sound. Trent Reznor scores movies because of that sound. To say it has no appeal is silly. It has no appeal to you. |

Sure techno music has a following, afterall guys like Skrillex make a pretty healthy living, but relatively speaking in the music industry its in the dumpsters. |

I keep trying to listen to this album. I keep failing because I get 3 or 4 songs in and find myself struggling to be even remotely interested. It just doesn’t grab me at all.
I’m afraid I’m going to feel the same about the next TOOL album as well. 10,000 Days was somewhat of a letdown and I don’t see how this one can even be that good. |
Dunno why people take this album as such a departure from what this band does.. go back and re listen to the old albums, its the same shit.
Take a song like Orestes for example. You could put it right on this album and no one would know it wasn't recorded in the same decade. |

On a separate note, have any of you listened to any Tool covers? Notice how they're pretty close to the original, with slight variations coming in the form of harmonies or different instrumentation? I think that says a ton about the quality of the original pieces. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6E1DkgUNfBc" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> EDIT: Sorry to make this thread about Tool. Can't help it ;) |

I get your feel on the cohesive part. Although Lateralus is the perfect example of what an album can be as a Sum, I typically don't care/bother to listen to music in that fashion. Single songs are fine by me. Maybe that's why I like 10,000 Days so much - Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot, Right in Two, Rosetta Stoned - all god-tier songs. |
Sounds like I need to give 10,000 days another try. Was pretty underwhelmed and disappointed back when it was first out but its been a long time.

have been listening to this & I agree with the OP. Its flat out good shit ! Not my fav APC album but still much better than all that hipster rock crap I've had to endure lately .
Some excellent guitar work in this album & of course Maynard's vocals are always badass. |
|
I just wish Tool was on Spotify. Makes me a super sad panda.

I've got a pretty hefty list of good new(ish) bands out there to fill the Tool void. Tool/APC fans will enjoy these, so I'd highly recommend a listen.
