Bands you wish everyone else knew about.
Every once in awhile someone somewhere will turn me onto a new band or group I hadnt heard of. Might be something older like Nat King Cole that you woldnt ever think you would like or something from your childhood that you just dont remember like Social Distortion that you have a new found respect for or a new band that you had to go find everything they had ever done.
Mine would be The Drowning Men, they were signed by Borstal Beat records after touring with Flogging Molly (BB is FMs label) the wife and I have seen them numerous times and its always a great show. http://www.thedrowningmen.com/ My personal favorite song is "Rita". Enjoy Im hoping to find some more good groups from this thread! |

Mumford and Sons.

I don't think they're still making music, but check out the Marvelous 3.
A good country band that doesn't get much play that I love is the Turnpike Troubadours. (Thanks to Iowanian for turning me onto them ) |

Walk Off the Earth. They're starting to get some airplay, and their YouTube covers have earned them some recognition, but their original music is really outstanding. Big, big fan here.
This is one of my favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHvl6z56zGc |

Along with Walk off the Earth, I'd highly recommend The Mowgli's. They're a really fun, happy-go-lucky type band from SoCal (lead male singer is from KC) that is quickly gaining popularity, largely in part due to their single "San Francisco" that gets used pretty commercially lately. Here's a few great ones from them:

mowgli's are great.

I'm an enormous Radiohead fan, so I'm a bit partial, but I respect the effort. Going to listen to OK Computer now though, so I do have to rep you for planting that seed in my mind. |

I think Matt Pond PA has become a little more popular. But I remember going to a show about 5 years ago in a decent sized venue where they probably had about 20-25 people.

Great idea for a thread.
Here's a band that I absolutely love. Her voice as a bit of a haunting quality and everyone that I've ever exposed to them looks at me like I'm crazy. So now you son's a bitches get little taste. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/OyxzjF8IjE8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/pi8aCk56dvA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Im stoked to find out today The Drowning Men will be announcing tour dates tomorrow. I havent gotten to see them since Atlanta opening for Bad Books (another one you should check out) a couple years ago. They have been touring Europe and then got asked to come back and did it again.
I havent heard anything on this thread yet I would say I dislike... keep em coming. |

The mowgli's will be playing Waka this year. I'm over the festival thing, but the site is hard to beat and very doable from Missouri or Kansas.
|
It sounds like the Drowning Men will be doing to shows with Flogging Molly, I highly suggest those shows.

Postmodern Jukebox |
I'm damned near 40 and didn't truly appreciate David Bowie until finishing Life On Mars.
He's like a Tom Petty that doesn't pretend to be straight in the 70's... |
Quote:
Live at Hammersmith Odeon is a cool as shit concert, queer or not. When I look at the full-length albums I own, I own more Bowie albums than any other artists save Pink Floyd, Motorhead, Judas Priest, and Black Sabbath. I have 10 of his studio albums. |
|
The problem with everyone knowing about a band you like is that'll get played out quick!
I read a blurb about Silversun Pickups...6 months later it's played out. Their predecessor Smashing Pumpkins, Gish was great, Siamese Dream was great but got played out. That Goete song? I saw it here first, now that song's a joke. So I'll play coy here and say I have a favorite and I'm going to "Keep It Like A Secret." |

At least Bowie's considered queer so you don't hear him 3-10 times a week if you listen to a radio/jukebox. In highschool my friends gave me shit for liking Bowie and I wear it as a badge of honor. |
while I know some of you will have heard of them....by and large most people haven't.
probably my favorite band. Kings X |
Right there with you guys with Walk Off the Earth. I saw them perform at Lollapalooza 2012. Was real close for the concert. They played a lot of their original, non-cover stuff..."Summer Vibe" really stuck out. The chick crowd-surfed and when she got back on stage, she reamed the crowd for groping her private parts when she was trying to have fun with the crowd by crowd surfing. Called them rude and disgusting...it was unfortunate that there were some pervs who were doing that. She made it pretty far out there...my brother and I helped prop one of her legs up as we helped her surf. I did notice that there were some dudes rushing in trying to cop a feel...it was pretty disturbing. Lady Gaga did this the year before at the Semi Precious Weapons set...I was just passing by when they were playing...I imagine she was groped as well.
But yeah, I love those guys. Other than the chick being pissed at a few dudes in the audience (and rightfully so), she was so, so, so down to Earth and personable with the crowd. I was impressed with all of them. |

Some bands I wish more people knew:
Toadies Yeasayer Grizzly Bear Beach House Screaming Trees Rusted Root Fred Neil (my God, listen to "The Dolphins." This guy wrote "Everybody's Talkin." I think Bob Dylan played harmonica for him when Dylan was starting out). First Aid Kit (check out the song, "Emmylou." Best Coast Dry Kill Logic The Dirty Heads Rebelution Iration Slightly Stoopid Pepper Joy Division (although I realize, in Europe, they are VERY well known) Sonic Youth The Vines Prong Mad Season There are a tone more. |
Quote:
Although, Grizzly Bear's 'Shields' may be one of my favorite albums ever. |
Quote:
That Sweden-folk music combo seems to work well...it does for First Aid Kit anyways...that band is unique as hell. |

I'm going to listen to it as soon as soon as I'm done with my Tame Impala binge. |

I know everyone had heard of Credence Clearwater Revival, but did you know that John Fogerty has released an album of his own and then redid a bunch of old CCR songs with other musicians?
If that band interests you at all you should read the back story as to why he had to wait so long to release his own album. |
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Imelda May.

The Beautiful South, one of the most successful British bands of the last 25 years and virtually NO Americans know them at all.

awesome stuff |
Got to see the band I mentioned in the OP again last night AND they were with Flogging Molly again. The tour goes through Kansas City and Id highly recommend the show.
March 12th Uptown Theater. |
This thread has been awesome. I've been pretty much locked into the music that I grew up with for many years. It gets real repetitive and has caused me to largely lose interest in music.
I previewed most of the songs in this thread, and popped the ones I liked into Pandora as seeds and boom, a whole world of new music has been opened to me. I'm going to check out Spotify, look into getting a speaker doc for my iphone, and maybe get a blue tooth set up for my car so I can listen to my iphone while in the car. |

I have built in blue tooth in my Mazda 3 and use it for my phone, I just need to figure out how to configure it to play music.

In the metal world, I'd have to tout Priapus. Too good to be self released. They have Relapse/Willowtip and a world tour written all over them.

The Mazda is fully Bluetooth enabled. Sound quality is a little compromised, even to my not-so-good ears. But being able to listen to music of my liking is huge.
I'm Alice falling through the rabbit hole. New-to-me bands I'm deep into: Muse Black Keyes Carolyn Wonderland Doyle bramhall Arctic Monkeys On deck: Shannon Curfman Swamp Cabbage Dave Hole Old bands in my que: Dylan Neil Young and CH Queen I have another 30 songs in my rotation that I never listened to until this thread. |

I have a couple more to add to this list for you all.
The Bunny Gang and in New Orleans I met the first opening act for Flogging Molly, "Beans on Toast" I cant stop listening to the CD he had for sale. From GB, he really had a good show. |
I think AWOLNATION is a band people should dig into a little more.
I mean, everybody knows "Sail", but that's about it. They have a bunch of great songs. I caught a concert of theirs on Palladia and it was awesome. Made me want to see them live. |
Older and far from unknown but I've been really into some Captain Beefheart lately. Townes Van Zandt too.
|
Quote:
I like the band, "Medicine." They sing that song, "Time Baby lll" in the movie, "The Crow." |
Love rock with a little bit of soul. Here's a few:
The Walkmen J Roddy Walston and the Business Bad Books Dr. Dog Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes Tallest Man on Earth (Dylan like sound) |
Quote:
I love that song on their newer album, "They Were Wrong." |

I realized I live in a ****ing bubble - this "nitch" band I've been listening to the last 10 years or so has sold almost 20 million albums worldwide... |

I saw them in concert as a headliner....at Lollapalooza....like 3-4 years ago. :D |

Love Fleetwood Mac (the first 3 albums: so good) Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Gov't Mule In a totally different genre (exotica) I think everyone needs to own several albums by: Les Baxter Martin Denny Arthur Lyman |
Captain Beefheart.
Now that's some ****ing crazy shit...love it! |
Try "Fleet Foxes." You can catch a Neil Young vibe and plenty of other older classic influences. "Mykonos" is good one to start with.
|
I'd like to find a good band that sounds like this.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/jH28gaXGl-U" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Shawn James seems to have that one song and then everything else is a bit more blues than rock. I'm looking for some deep south, guttural punk/folk rock kinda thing. Does such a thing even exist? |
Stiltzkin
Temple of the Dog |

I probably shouldn't even post this, but there's a band called Armcannon that makes metal covers of nostalgic video game music.
