So why can't we commit this new money to a top of the line pitcher. Thats $75 - $150 million of new money through 2020. We still have the cap space above to pay the other players.

Again, why not pay Schurzer $25 million/7 years, $175 million total. We have the room to not hamstring us down the road.

I'm thinking we realistically have 2 years left in the window. In 2017 Holliday is gone. Peralta, Molina and Waino are done or on their last legs. Why not give it our best shot to win another WS in the next two year window?

They signed Reynolds for his ability to play 1B. They were looking for someone who could play RF/LF/1B. Although it seems to me we had 5 outfielders already.

Who is our utility infielder this year? Surely they understand Kozma won't do. Garcia? Can Reynolds play some 3B as well?

Just heard a guy on MLB tonight say he thinks the Cardinals get Shurzer but it will be mid January after the Yankees refuse to fork over $300 million.

Ken Rosenthal: Could Hamels, Price or Scherzer be answer to Cards' rotation needs?

The St. Louis Cardinals say they like their starting rotation. But that is not preventing them from pursuing a major upgrade.
The team is exploring trades for left-handers Cole Hamels and David Price and the possibility of signing free-agent right-hander Max Scherzer, according to major-league sources.

No deal appears close on any front, and it’s possible that the Cardinals will simply decide that the acquisition cost in each case is too high.
However, the Cardinals’ interest in adding another starter reflects, at least in part, concern about their rotation beyond right-hander Lance Lynn.
Staff ace Adam Wainwright is coming off surgery last October in which he had cartilage trimmed from his right elbow. Michael Wacha pitched only 107 innings last season due to a stress reaction in his right shoulder.
John Lackey is entering his free-agent year, while Carlos Martinez and Marco Gonzales are unproven as starters. Jaime Garcia, the sole veteran left-hander, underwent surgery in July to correct thoracic outlet syndrome in his shoulder and has pitched only 99 innings the past two seasons.

The Cardinals’ preference, according to sources, is to add another left-hander; hence, their interest in Hamels and Price. Scherzer holds a different appeal — he is a native of St. Louis and the best pitcher on the free-agent market. However, sources say he is seeking $200 million, and his agent, Scott Boras, generally is not inclined to grant hometown discounts.

Hamels and Price would be expensive in other ways.

The Phillies want premium talent for Hamels, who is owed $90 million over the next four years. Teams usually balk at trading top prospects while taking on expensive contracts. The good news for the Cardinals is that they could acquire Hamels without his permission; they are not on his no-trade list.

If anything, Hamels would welcome a deal to St. Louis, sources say. His wife, Heidi, is from the St. Louis area, and all of her family lives in Missouri, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.
The Cardinals’ biggest problem, perhaps, would be satisfying the Phillies.
To secure Hamels, the Cardinals likely would need to part with Martinez or Gonzales as well as an outfielder such as Randal Grichuk or Stephen Piscotty (the Phillies have long coveted Peter Bourjos as well, sources say).

Such a price could be prohibitive.

I read earlier that Shields could well end up in the Lou.

If that's what the Phillies want for Hamels, I think it makes a lot of sense for the Cardinals to go get him.

Especially if they can do it without surrendering Martinez. A deal based around Piscotty, Gonzalez and Bourjos would be a steal for St. Louis, IMO. No major impact players going out... ace-level pitcher coming in.

I think he can probably get enough bats on our roster next year in some utility roles (including 1st as has been mentioned earlier). Most of his errors at 3B were throwing issues. That wouldn't be as big of an issue at 1st.

I'd have no problem with that trade. Piscotty or Grichuk take your pic Philly and Gonzales/Bourjas. Print em.

Piscotty, Bourjos, and Gonzalez is not an underpay. That's a fair trade, but it leaves the Cardinals dangerously thin in the OF.

They would have to be pretty high on Grichuk to make that trade. He has the athleticism to play center, but he's still an atrocity against RHP. That would give him until 2016 to get that figured out, because I can't imagine the Cardinals are going to stay with Jay much longer given his athletic profile, age, and escalating cost.

We need another top of the line pitcher for our 2 year window that we have left to realistically get another WS championship. I still have no idea how we are suppose to replace Waino, Molina, Holliday, Peralta's production in 2017.

We could be dangerously thin at pitcher too real fast. Waino's elbow and Wacha's shoulder flare up. Lackey gets old and slow, Lynn starts melting down again at the first sign of trouble. Martinez flames out in the 4th-5th inning too many times etc... We need another top stable pitcher to go up against the other teams top pitchers in the playoffs.

Would do that trade in a heartbeat. One would want that turd Bourjos?

I get it; he hit like shit last year, but that's not the only way you can add value, he's three years younger than Jay, and his Steamer projections are better on a per-game basis as well.

My question is why did Holliday, Waino, Molina etc call Scherzer and try to convince him to come here. Why would they make those calls unless they had talked to Mo? Some assurance that it was a possibility, that the Cardinals had and was willing to spend the money?

You know he has to sign for more than what he already rejected.

You get stability and power from your lower body. If you have a hip impingement (wouldn't surprise me if it was a torn hip labrum), it's going to affect your ability to swing the bat with any authority because you have to plant , drive, and rotate your hips.

Kroenke might write DeWitt a check to get Scherzer so all the attention goes back to the Cardinals. ;)

From what I've read, (correct me if I'm wrong hamas), Hamels has 4 years guaranteed @ $23million per, and an option for a 5th year for $24 million, which to me seems like a good bargain in today's market.

We still have a logjam lol we need another to get traded. WE still have 5 OF's who could play everyday on a team somewhere. lol

I think alot of Fans dont understand why Friedman made the moves he did, but people that are actually knowledgable know. FIrst off, we sucked bad with RISP. This should help. WE have players that put the ball in play and not swing for the fences all the time. Rollins is just a stop Gap until Guerrero and Seager are ready to take over. I dont know where they are going to put them dudes exactly, but Seager is SS/3rd and Guerrero is 2B/SS.

THey want to promote from withing the Minor leagues and people gotta go in order for this to happen! Cant keep the Kids in the minor forever, they have to come up..

IM still worried about the Bullpen a tad. We might get to see the 18 year old pitcher, he should be 19 after the ASB, last year he pitched 17/18 years old and his era was like 1.10 or something stupid. He's just dominating. If he continues to do that, ya gotta bring him up like they Did Kershaw, he came up right after he turned 20.

Lance Lynn signs for 3 years/$22 Million. Arb years buy out. I thought when a club buys out the arb years they usually get another year or two?

Bourjas and Cruz sign one year deals too.

Why can't we find a better backup than Cruz?

Mozeliak is absolutely on point to do this. You save yourself maybe a million only to strain your relationship with the player. It's penny-wise and pound foolish.
