Ed Harris takes Top villain role in HBOs "Westworld" reboot
Sweet. Loved this film when I was a kid. It's ripe for a reboot.
Doesn't sound like he's playing the Yul Brenner role though http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/08/11/ed-harris-westworld/ Image Credit: WireImage.com Ed Harris is coming to series TV: The Abyss and Apollo 13 actor has signed on as the Big Bad in HBO’s Westworld reboot. The four-time Oscar nominee’s character is called The Man in Black, and is described as “the distillation of pure villainy into one man.” He joins previously cast star — and fellow series television newcomer—Anthony Hopkins, along with Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Shannon Woodward. The Warner Bros.-produced sci-fi pilot produced by J.J Abrams, Jerry Weintraub, and Bryan Burk updates Michael Crichton’s 1973 classic film about a theme park where androids fulfill dark human desires. Harris’ description might sound like he’s playing the Yul Brynner killer-cowboy robot role, but it seems like actor Rodrigo Santoro was tapped for that part—and online production rumors suggest The Man in Black is actually a human character who sadistically abuses the androids. Harris will soon be seen the feature film Run All Night, starring opposite Liam Neeson and Joel Kinnaman. Harris won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for his work in HBO’s Game Change. |
"Reboot"
Is there any word that inspires less optimism that a movie/show won't be shitty? Reboots must have about a 99% fail rate. |

They need to do a "Deadwood" "reboot" with the same cast and plot.
....so, just continue Deadwood. ****ers. |

Westworld was the first PG movie I saw in a theater. I was about 7 years old.

This show HAS to be better than the movie.
|
Looks great!
The movie was good for its time. Yul Brenner was so creepy |
Noticed the "Q"

Awesome

NO WAY

That actually looks really good.

This looks like it could be better than the original movie. Not quite a Battle Star Galactica level upgrade because that original TV show was shit, but along those lines.

I'm actually surprised it took them this long to reboot it because the premise is ripe in the digital/Information Age we live in. |
Take the whole production crew from True Detective Ver.1 and transplant them to this series...and dont let JJ Abrams touch anything that requires creative input. He's the generic kiss of death...just take his production cashflow and lock the door.
This has the potential to be really great...like anything, the director they choose will either destroy a great opportunity or make it alive. *see Speilberg trying to understand Kubrick's AI...too vast of topic for him. |

dude is awesome.

Damn this looks good....
|
I heard some people who had advanced copies of this on the Stern show talking it up. They had a ton of positive things to say.
|
That was quite the futuristic movie back in the day. Remake as a series is a great idea. Ed Harris is awesome too.
|
Looks good man, this competition between AMC and HBO has been badass
|
This looks really ducking good, but I'm easily entertained.
|
I like the look of this. In for sure.

Great first episode. Loved the score too. Much better than tonight's shitty game.

Oh yeah. So far, very cool. Good spin with the first newcomer. Caught me off guard. Hopkins is creepily awesome too. And the "speech" by the bandit at the end was hilarious.
|
Really enjoyed the first episode. I don't remember the original movie so I'm not sure exactly what happens (not even sure if they are following the same script here or not), but I do look forward to seeing where this goes.

And the hints at the depraved stuff going on in the deep desert sounds like this show is going to go down some very dark paths. Love it so far. |
Really enjoyed the first episode. It was bit slow, but I feel like it was being deliberate, and setting the parameters of their world and such. Nice setup for what is looking to be a great show.
|
Holy shit. Awesome.
The usage of the player piano for some anachronistic jams was the tits -especially for the "cover" story. |
Yeah. I caught Black Hole Sun and Paint it Black, but that was in the second half of the show. I was tempted to go see what songs I didn't notice in the first half.

That was a great first episode. Nothing over the top, but plenty of questions I'll be curious to see play out. I'm hooked.

Loving it
Incredible bit of world building so far. Love all the little details about the underground world of the park. It would be quite an operation to run a theme park of this nature, and they are showing that. A coworker friend brought up , is the world real or virtual? I'm assuming it's real/physical, ,but it could be virtual I suppose? They do show the guests arriving by train though |

Anthony Hopkins' character is awesome in this show. His perception of the world around him, as well as the world he has created, provide some highly interesting moments.
I really enjoyed the monologue referring to Occam's Razor; just great scripting and acting all around. |
2nd episode delivered for me. 1st episode was fine for getting oriented with the landscape, and not a criticism outside of it just didn't have that 1 scene that delivers the hook. To be fair, the story premise is already the hook.

What is the significance of the bartender appearing to have black hair in the first episode but then having grey hair in the second episode? It looked like the same guy, just older.

I half love, half HATE, the fact that Abrams is apparently delving back into the narrative possibilities of the conflation of reality, fiction and fictionalized reality.
On one hand, in their beginning stages the storylines spark the imagination and turn the viewing process into an individualized creative process of its own as you dream up 'fanfic' of what it all means. On the other hand we have LOST, the elephant in the room. The show where all that narrative world-building turned out to be a Potemkin village erected to mask the fact that they had no idea what they were doing in the end. That said, here's preview footage. <iframe width="626" height="352" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Bq-E2FZZ3d4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

In an Abrams world, this kind of detail could be a CRUCIAL plot twist [or meta-narrative insight], or it could be a simple lapse on the continuity coordinator's part, . . . or it could be a once-upon-a-time crucial detail that got abandoned when the writers change their minds, and years from now they'll slyly hint it was a continuity error. . . or was it!!!!!????? In the moment, it's compelling and satisfying to chew through the narrative details looking for meaning, Only time will tell if we're all a bunch of armchair Sherlocks, or a pile of dumb animals chasing their tails on the porch. |
This discussion reminds me of a philosophical quandary that seems to be percolating back up around the show.
What is more terrifying to you An AI that passes the Turing test? or An AI that deliberately fails the Turing test? |

Exhibiting deception means that the new entity has already bitten from the apple and fallen. I guess you can take consolation in the fact that it happened so quickly that we were predestined to fail and doomed from the start. It is an interesting premise to present self awareness in an AI as a glitch, and the commentary as it translates to humanity and our relationship to nature, our environment, and one another. |

No one knows what a digital sentient being would be drawn to. The altruistic better parts of our humanity or the craven vices of the worst of us. Of course, our worst traits are almost all born out of our primal base nature. How would an AI replicate those primordial basic instincts and evolutionary urges and impulses? The part of man not controlled by his prefrontal cortex. |
