The Americans on FX
Just saw a promo, but haven't heard anything about it.
From the promo, it looks like there are some Russian spies living in America and are trying to keep their covers intact. Looks pretty decent. What's everyones thoughts on this? I'm kinda excited. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gth9kl2Q4I0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I'll be watching...Espionage is fun, but it's hard to pull off without jumping the shark very early on.
|
I'm willing to give any new show on FX a shot.
Kerri Russell. Yes please! Posted via Mobile Device |

FX has been pretty solid over the years and I like spy films so I'm going to give it a shot
|
I am also looking forward to it. FX has been putting on some good shows lately.

I watched it last night, not bad. It felt like watching a bit of the opposite side of the Clancy book I'm reading right now.
|
Finishing it up right now. Really like the pilot.
|
My cable pooped out right in the middle....and it's not on demand yet. Anywhere you can watch this online?
|
Not that I can find. I don't think FX puts their shows on hulu or netflix anymore, and it doesn't look like it reairs until after Justified next Tuesday. Hopefully somebody else can come up with a better answer.
|
The pilot is on Hulu.

SOA, AHS and Terriers off the top of my head. Of course, nothing current....just the past seasons. You usually can buy currently running seasons of episodes off Amazon instant on an ala carte basis for like $1.99 each. |

At work, I have it DVR'd at home.. Is it any good?

Good show.

I did like the end. Thats what they can do well on TV. Show the cat and mouse part of spying. |

That being said, I really liked it. In fact, it was quite a bit better than I expected. It kept me hooked through the whole thing and the twists they used aren't sustainable over the long term, but I expect the tone to be set and other plot devices will keep the interest in the story. I thought it was pretty well done for what it was, and overall I'm really impressed. And good **** Keri Russell is still smokin ass hot. |
lol, USA/FX/TNT/TBS/AMC can almost do what HBO and Showtime do now days. you wont see any bush or nips.Everything else is fair game. They can say any word but the F word now.
|
It was pretty solid. The Mrs. Karate Kid shit was a bit much though.

In spite of all that, I really liked it and I'm really excited. |

finally watched it off DVR and I thought it was pretty good. The agent who moves in across the street has a really memorable face but I can't think of his name. He and Phillip were really good though I thought.
It kind of feels like it should be a mini-series. We'll see if they can keep it fresh |

I thought it was really good.
It'll be interesting to see how they handle that Sopranos dilemma of having to root for a very obvious bad guy. I mean let's face it, these are as bad a guys as it got in the 80s. |

The father could be a character the engender sympathy, but Kerri just shoved her finger in a man's ass for the motherland - something tells me that this is not the kind of person that defects shortly thereafter. |

Another good episode but I thought they 'warmed' Elizabeth entirely too quickly.
2 days ago she was willing to roast her family on a spit for Mother Russia. Now she's being criticizing mission objectives and getting all giggly while piercing her daughters ears at midnight. Wait....I forgot. It's a woman we're talking about here. Since when did their emotions run evenly for more than 15 minutes straight? Retracted. FX hit the nail on the head. |

Anyways, so far so good. Its keeping me interested. I just need to remind myself the setting is in the 80's not current times. lol im always waiting for a cell phone or some high tech and its not happening really. haha then im like oh yeah, 80's lol |

I can empathize with her position. The draw between country and children is tough. Being married for 20 years to someone you know nothing about and your commie bastard government told you to marry is tough. The whole identity crisis is very interesting to me. Bottom line, I'm OK with Keri Russell's character. On the whole, I'm really impressed with it so far. There is a little bit of nostalgia going on, and the workings WITHOUT technology is interesting. The characters are interesting. I'm all in. |
In other news, I gotta be a spy. They **** all the time.
|
I wonder if we developed a spy program anywhere close to what the Russians were pulling off back in the day.
I would think that it would be a shitty assignment. Russians get to come here for most of their adult life, getting sent in the other direction would be a nightmare. |

And it has some quick lines here and there that I think are just brilliant. "You and God have had a misunderstanding" was blood chilling and for some reason "Anyway...I took his caviar" and the delivery of it just cracked me up. Quote:
Then popped them all with a single active ping at the same time. They had to have absolutely shit themselves. Not only did we know where they were, but our subs were so much quieter than theirs that we were able to park right behind them without them having the foggiest idea. We essentially just told them that we could've sunk every active submarine they had right then and there. When the USSR fell and we got more of a presence in Russia, we learned that most of the 'big bad boogeyman' in Russia was a myth. Credit to them - they had us convinced with little more than bluffs and bravado. We'd have flattened the USSR in months. |
So far, this is a must see. DVR it. Well worth it.

Girlfriend and I DVRd it after I saw this thread. I am in. First two episodes were very good and love the twist with the new neighbor.

Yeah, definately added to the rotation of few shows I watch. Still nothing worth a shit on the networks though!!

They have been rebroadcasting all of the episodes EXCEPT THAT ONE!!! But anyway, there has been a few shows that my wife and I started getting into only to see them cancelled. I'm tired of that shit. I have taken to DVRing new shows of intrigue and not watching them until I make sure they are hits. My external hard disc allows me to do that. That said, the recorded Americans episodes that I have collected all have weird lengths, like 1:09 or 1:12 etc. What gives? Isn't this a one hour show? |
Son of a bitch. This show is really good. I don't know if you guys are into the personal side of it from this episode, but I can't help but be drawn in. I'm so ****ing into this show.
Spoiler!

Loving this show. Great stuff.
Interesting twist to the story to introduce Gregory into the equation. |

Gotta love watching skinny Phil continue to kick the shit out of people. |

Interesting. I need to check out the show. But do you really think that it would have been that easy? Months? It was Stalin, after all, who pretty much took on Germany in WWII. Posted via Mobile Device |

I can thank this show for opening my eyes to the biggest personal mondegreen of my life.
I had always thought that the 'Air Tonight' lyrics were 'I can feel it coming in the air tonight hold on' Never once occurred to me that it was 'oh Lord' ETA: Pedobear is dead, long live Pedobear |
I loved this episode. The whole Reagan getting shot, brink of total war, brilliantly executed. And it did a fantastic job of working in the plot functions they were pushing. It is absolutely fascinating. I love it. I literally can't wait until the next episode.

FX Renews ‘The Americans’ For 2nd Season
Just four weeks into its first season, FX’s Cold War drama The Americans has been picked up for a Season 2 with a 13-episode order. “The Americans has quickly established itself as a key part FX’s acclaimed drama line-up,” FX president John Landgraf said in a statement. Debuting on January 30, The Americans stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell as two sleeper KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington D.C. in the early Eighties. The show premiered strong with 3.22 million viewers, bettering debuts by fellow FX series Sons of Anarchy and American Horror Story. Ratings for the second week initially saw a steep decline but Live +3 data brought the show’s viewership up to 3.11 million viewers. Former CIA agent and Falling Skies scribe Joe Weisberg created the series and exec produces with Joel Fields, Graham Yost and Amblin TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank for Fox TV Studios and FX Prods. The first season finale airs May 1. |
When the head couple met in the hotel. Keri had a moment where she acted her ass off with her eyes. There were like 15 shifts, all of them more alluring. She really selling the act of falling in love.

Most of the time they would have to mothball their scariest toys anyway. Even stuff like the Kirov class ships, which were scary sonsabitches, never worked right and are pretty much death traps. They only really used one of them for any extended period of time and spent billions on the other 3-4, which were decommissioned within a few years of launch. The worst thing the Soviet Union could have done was try to keep pace with the US arms buildup through the 80s. They just didn't have the industrial capacity to do it efficiently so it ended up incredibly expensive for them and ultimately completely ineffective. Reagan probably got a little bit lucky, but his policies throughout the 80s really did spend the USSR into oblivion. By the late 80s, everything they had was crap and they didn't have the financial wherewithal to maintain it. The Russians could've zagged, kept themselves more financially solvent as we were spending more than we had, and bought up US debt and potentially remained a legitimate threat to the United States. Instead they played our game and just weren't prepared to play it. Yeah, we'd have probably maintained some presence in Russia for years thereafter, but storming and collapsing the Soviet Union wouldn't have taken us more than 6 months, IMO. The only wildcard would've been Chinese intervention, but at that point you have WWIII and who knows how that would've gone? |

They've done a fantastic job of creating dynamic characters, especially Phil's. And Russel just coolly blasting that security guard (and the look Phil gave her) was just outstanding. And unlike most shows with the complex character development, stuff actually happens in this one. |

And if we encountered any delay, those Russian winters are always a bitch to deal with. We would have been far better prepared than the French or Germans, but you never know. There's no doubt we would have eventually won. |
